Texting with a friend of mine last night.. diehard Bruins fan, has always hated the Leafs, moved to Alberta years ago to work the oil, is outside the media noise, he's asking what the tone is down here. Gets around to asking if I think the coach will go, answered yes, my guess is he goes, narrative is always starting late in PO games and being unprepared... that anyone could coach them to 100 point seasons. The unedited response:

Sweet Jesus you crazy c***s you are now complaining about 100 point seasons... you stupid c***s they suck for the last 40 years before about a few years ago.. With in the next 3 years they will win the cup. I'm calling it.

I think another option might open up if Matthews signs for 7-8 years or the trade offers for Marner/Nylander are terrible.

You can keep the core for the next two seasons until Tavares and Marner's contracts are done. This is assuming they have a number from Marner before 2024-25. You then reevaluate everything including the possibility for McDavid (lol) since Matthews is still there for another 5+ seasons.

It's not what I would do but I could see it happening.

The problem is Tavares is the weak one but they can't remove him without his permission. To be fair, I think they could build a better team around Marner + Matthews + Nylander while using Tavares' cap space for better surrounding pieces. It's unfortunate they can't go down this route.

Right now, they might not want to give up on Marner in his prime from a business perspective, which will lead to this two-year waiting strategy where you take cracks at the playoffs using supplementary changes + a coaching change. I think the Keefe firing becomes mandatory with this strategy.

Leafs need to trade nylander

1- please dont tell me hes the most productive foward... half of his points came from play he did absolutly nothing except watching his teammate doing everything like 2 matthews goal+ kerfoot goal gm 4 vs tampa, tavares goal game 2 where he missed rhe puck for tip-in but jt took rebound... it was the same story last year...

2- he dont hit anybody
3- he stop skating everytime he risking to get hit and doing everything he can to avoid it
4- defensivly useless
5- he making life harder to everyone whos playing with because his teammate need to work harder to get the puck back, to defend or on forecheck
6-will never ever defend his teammate
7- the fact he left right after leafs elimination just show me lack of interest about team succes. When you saw Matthews, marner, jt all talking about his faith about the group and desire to stay in Toronto but you see at the same time nylander just thinking about joining his brother to play for sweden... not a good sign
8- i think the exemple hes giving up make him a negative leader and pretty bad influence especially for Matthews and Marner
9- last year of contract and pretty sure he will probably doing everything he can to get a 10M+/season deal
10- for me its kind of player than when he will hit 30+ and losing speed, his game will decrease pretty fast but will probably want 7-8 season contrat

I wish the topic changed to " fack the core" chant
I wish the core players like Ryan Getzlaf, Scott Niedermayer, Pavel Datsyuk, Jordan Tootoo!!!!
Because Jordan can beat up anyone tried to bully his teammates

So true. Talking about trading the best talent we have had in my lifetime for what??

I think some people long to go back to the days of not making the playoffs so that they can piss and moan even louder.

No real good coaches available, no Tkachuks available, and Tavares not willing to go. Marner and Nylander contracts put us in a position where trading both makes most sense. Sometimes you have to play the cards in front of you so a 2-year reset seems ideal right now. Trade Marner, Nylander, and Brodie for picks and prospects. Give Carbury 2 years and see if he works or if someone else becomes available.

Run it back....what could go wrong? I guess if you're happy with regular season success, nothing

Can you imagine if the Leafs missed the playoffs?

We would miss out on a whole 5-7 games of the yearly humiliation ritual!

The logistics of trying to trade the core is interesting if Marner and Matthews are included.
They have both stated that they want to stay.
They are both franchise players.

Matthews requires a contract first. If it is perceived they are trying to pre-negotiate a team friendly contract as a condition for him to stay with an implication that Marner was to go, he will definitely never sign. He has all the leverage. He will run his contract to the end and say a great FU to the leafs for a max contract. Putting the screws to him will backfire.
That said, trade Marner right away and he will still put the screws to the team because he even has even more leverage.
Try to trade Matthews and a team will insist on talking to him first to see if he will re-sign. He will again have all the leverage and will negotiate a max contract if he likes the team. This limits the number of teams immensely.

If they can make a trade with Matthews work, Marner will own the team and will bend the team over next contract. He will remember the schedule B slight and will know that the team is not give and take. Marner can make a fortune somewhere in the league. Little will keep him from exercising leverage.

Bottom line...whoever is left will run this team.
How they approach this will be interesting. Dubas is signalling that he is stressed and "might not" be around. There is a possibility that this is to buy time so the agents of both Marner and Matthews don't seek out assurances from him too early...which would be a disaster. Trading these guys will not be easy and there are some repercussions.

It's a bit disappointing seeing the direction Marner has taken. His playmaking skills are undeniable, top 10 maybe top 5 in the league, and he's even become an underrated scoring threat. But man alive that amazing hockey instinct that made him something like a superior penalty killer at a very young age and a surprisingly good playoff performer as a rookie has not advanced. He has not become some form of a hardened pro player. He really could still pass for a 19 year old.

And the above applies to Matthews and Nylander as well. None of them really seem like NHL veterans with 7 seasons of playoff experience. Has getting by on their superior talent and not getting pushed in other less statistically rewarding ways stagnated their growth as more than scoring stars?

Chicago Blackhawks the favourite to land Auston Matthews, if he is done with the Maple Leafs

Can you envision Auston Matthews putting his offensive talents alongside the skill that Connor Bedard will bring to the National Hockey League?

The latest odds have the Chicago Blackhawks to be the favourite to land Matthews if he has indeed played his last game for the Maple Leafs. BetOnline.ag has Chicago at 2/1 odds on being Matthews’ next team, if it’s not the Leafs. Next are the Arizona Coyotes at 3/1, the New York Rangers at 5/1 and the Los Angeles Kings and Vegas Golden Knights, both at 6/1.

The greater chance is that Matthews remains in Toronto. Matthews wants to get an extension done this summer and there has been no indication from the Leafs that the club would rather move on than get a contract done.

Chicago doesn't have a ton of assets to make that sort of trade. I guess we're talking about some of their 2022 1sts, future 1sts, 2nds and I guess Seth Jones? Arizona has better trade assets.

Why would we get rid of a speedy winger with 25 points in his last 25 playoff games who just broke out with 40 goals this season for 7 milliion, when we clearly need more speed and scoring ?
Because hes a ufa and is a mercenary like his dad? Cant afford another 10+ mil wingers and dont think for one second thats not what hes going to demand as he has full rights and control as a ufa. Not to mention he absolutely blows at backchecking and covering his man on dzone. Now is the time to sell high

I could see Matty traded for Bedard and Jones type deal going down .. but i think Chicago would have to add a little more than just Jones due to his cap hit being too high
