Randy Carlyle just lead the Leafs to a new NHL record in shots against over 82 games. Worse than the '74-'75 Washington Capitals. Worse than any Oilers team in recent years. We were worse in terms of Fenwick/Corsi than any team in the league this season, including Buffalo. My friends, we just spent the past seven months watching one of the worst possession teams in the history of the NHL.
While something like that doesn't happen entirely because of the coaching staff, it's awfully telling how Carlyle even now continues to say that he thought we were 'good enough' defensively and 'kept things to the outside', not realizing that this is the fatal flaw in his philosophy. Our team may appear to be a bunch of wimps who won't engage in board battles, but in reality, it's just the backwards-assed coach telling them not to do it (there's a Bobby Ryan quote I've posted a couple of times recently to support this). This is why Carlyle tends to favour 'grinders' who will dive down and block shots - because, with your wingers standing out in the middle of the ice, it's the only way his system even remotely works. It's similar to what John Tortorella was doing in New York for a few years, but even more passive, and with a roster less equipped to do it.
As long as we continue to play this way, we'll continue to spend 95% of the game running around in their own end, unable to establish much of a forecheck because any time the puck leaves our zone, it's usually just to dump it in for a wholesale line change. In other words - nobody forechecking, and up the ice the opposition come yet again.
It's absolutely mind-boggling that this management group can't see that, and that Randy Carlyle, with all his experience, can't put it together that there's more to playing like Boston and St. Louis than simply saying you want your team to play like them. When he watches those teams, does he not notice that they actually pressure the points? Does he not see them taking players to the half wall and battling, rather than standing a few feet away, waving their sticks around going "OOGA BOOGA"? I can't wrap my head around it. Is he ****ing insane? Poulin is the GM of the Marlies - a team that actually does play 'the right way' - and even he's apparently blind to the problem with the Leafs.
Like what the actual **** is going on? This isn't even maddening so much as it's just completely ****ing weird. We lost 12 of our last 14 games, set a new NHL record in shots against, went a 35-game stretch winning only 5 in regulation, had worse possession stats than any other team in the league..... and the head coach is given a vote of confidence.
