The Coaching Thread Part II // Carlyle GIVEN TWO YEAR EXTENSION.. WHAT THE ****

If management feels that his vision for the way the team should play is correct ie, he's asking them to do the right kind of things it just isn't implemented then this might not be the end of the world.

It's like a school, if youre happy that the teacher is telling them the right things and asking the correct questions but it's the kids who are "challenged" then you get rid of the kids not the teacher, and allow him to develop the ones who are onboard.

'cept a lot of those "kids" won't be graduating for a while, hell some just "re-upped".

Carlyle says he has no idea how to fix what's wrong with the Leafs.

Gets extension.

Leafs core can only make playoffs once in 5 years in a 48 game season. Get 7,8 year extensions. This one is actually reasonable length.

But he's not telling them the right things.

His system is garbage and he relies completely on veterans and enforcers in the bottom 6.

We did well DESPITE his system last season IMO, we had a good group of players last season but then this seasn we brought in bad character playyers and they collapsed.

Probably the most Pejorative Slured decision the Leafs have made since....the Clarkson signing. Nonis is singlehandedly ****ing this franchise up. How in the ****ing world do you give Carlyle a 2-year EXTENSION!!! for the absolutely embarrassing collapse...Wow I am just speechless with the stupidity of this franchise.

If you're going to fire the assistants then how does the head hunch survive? It's like cutting off your nose despite your face. Carlyle hired these guys and it was mainly his system..Just unbelievable lack of managerial IQ

In theory it sounds good, but I just very much doubt the result.

It's more like a school where the principal is in his office all day smoking weed. Then hires a guy who doesn't understand the material to teach. And finally is being pestered about his school having terrible grades overall. Thus he gives the teacher a raise and says the students should figure it out :).

There really are no words.

This is a train wreck in slow motion, if by "slow motion" you mean the entirety of a generation...

Tank Nation 2020! Get your bumper sticker now.

At this point might as well trade Gardiner and Kadri. I expect nothing less then the dumbest decisions we could possibly make.

I think the Leafs are the most fiscally irresponsible sports team in history.

The leafs will end up doing horrible again next season and they will fire Carlyle because of the FIRE CARLYLE chants. And they will end up paying Carlyle the extra year on his contract.

I give it a year before this team decides to rebuild properly.

BobMac thinks we'll be trading Kadri and Gardiner now.

Can we do anything but laugh?

Carlyle's extension might be mind boggling but it could be irrelevant in the end if the team underperforms next season.

But trading two of it's young, promising players for vets might just be the tipping point to turn this fanbase into a mob.

Shanahan and Nonis better tread carefully on this one.

So I think the Leafs might be one of the only companies in the world that not only accepts crap, but actively rewards it.

Team looks like crap all year, even when we win, plus a huge collapse = 2 year extension. Real accountability there. Screw this organization, they are pieces of garbage from the top down.

yep... that would be really dumb. i'll be super pissed if we lose Gardiner.

Kadri is still developing into in a great player... i'm not giving up on him now. I think if he plays with Leivo next season, that could be the young blood we need to give us another line that can score.

Carlyle staying

Obviously with this news the roster is headed for some changes. The current roster does not suit the team defence approach that Carlyle wants. Kadri and Franson are prime candidates to be moved. Veterans will be brought in.
There's a good chance the 8th overall pick in the draft will be moved. Spezza could be the return. Shanahan has to really resist the quick fix but in Toronto the pressure to get better fast is hard to ignore. This is going to be a very interesting off season.

For those of us who want to draft high and build properly, bye Kadri, bye Gardiner, hello someone else overpaid to leave us drafting 12th wondering where the mojo went. Oh well, 8 years to rebuild and counting. Our future no. 1 C is about 10 years old right now. Hope he likes the Leafs.

And rofl at people that say "carlyle doesnt know what went wrong" he is saying that to the media so he isnt throwing guys under the bus. Then people say "but he calls players out" imo he talked about franson at his last press conference and if anythingg that will motivate him.

Bipolar fan base holy ****.... Blow this team up its the players not the coach

(Although i wouldnt have minded him getting fired)

Yeah well I'm not confident at all that Nonis can get anything but a bag of pucks for them. Nonis is an idiot. Yeah let's keep a coach that lead our collapse but fire his assistants and now let's trade our young players...****ing dumbasses in this organization

I LOVE IT ......but now we all agree we can laugh at the leafs in uniscense...... how can u reward a basketbal coach for making the playoffs and reward your hockey coach for crapping the bed
the assistants are being blackballed ,,,,,unreal ,

Randy Carlyle just lead the Leafs to a new NHL record in shots against over 82 games. Worse than the '74-'75 Washington Capitals. Worse than any Oilers team in recent years. We were worse in terms of Fenwick/Corsi than any team in the league this season, including Buffalo. My friends, we just spent the past seven months watching one of the worst possession teams in the history of the NHL.

While something like that doesn't happen entirely because of the coaching staff, it's awfully telling how Carlyle even now continues to say that he thought we were 'good enough' defensively and 'kept things to the outside', not realizing that this is the fatal flaw in his philosophy. Our team may appear to be a bunch of wimps who won't engage in board battles, but in reality, it's just the backwards-assed coach telling them not to do it (there's a Bobby Ryan quote I've posted a couple of times recently to support this). This is why Carlyle tends to favour 'grinders' who will dive down and block shots - because, with your wingers standing out in the middle of the ice, it's the only way his system even remotely works. It's similar to what John Tortorella was doing in New York for a few years, but even more passive, and with a roster less equipped to do it.

As long as we continue to play this way, we'll continue to spend 95% of the game running around in their own end, unable to establish much of a forecheck because any time the puck leaves our zone, it's usually just to dump it in for a wholesale line change. In other words - nobody forechecking, and up the ice the opposition come yet again.

It's absolutely mind-boggling that this management group can't see that, and that Randy Carlyle, with all his experience, can't put it together that there's more to playing like Boston and St. Louis than simply saying you want your team to play like them. When he watches those teams, does he not notice that they actually pressure the points? Does he not see them taking players to the half wall and battling, rather than standing a few feet away, waving their sticks around going "OOGA BOOGA"? I can't wrap my head around it. Is he ****ing insane? Poulin is the GM of the Marlies - a team that actually does play 'the right way' - and even he's apparently blind to the problem with the Leafs.

Like what the actual **** is going on? This isn't even maddening so much as it's just completely ****ing weird. We lost 12 of our last 14 games, set a new NHL record in shots against, went a 35-game stretch winning only 5 in regulation, had worse possession stats than any other team in the league..... and the head coach is given a vote of confidence.
