Back then teams could get compensatory picks for losing a player to free agency, so New York basically gave Edmonton a freebie for some minor assets. If I remember correctly Edmonton got a third round for free out of it by giving them a 4th or later.

Looked into it and Edmonton got a 2nd rounder for Jussi Markannen and futures which were converted into a 4th round pick. Edmonton eventually traded that compensatory pick with Steven Valiquette and Dwight Helminen for Nedved and Jussi Markkanen.

On top of that i still feel Mcdavid hasn’t really found a groove yet.

Have to give the Kings some credit (wow, that was hard to write), they've done an excellent job of limiting our forwards, especially on rushes into the zone ... which, is a lot of what we do.

And, I have developed a new level of hate for a certain Kings defenseman.

Nurse needs to be way better as well.

Nurse, Nuge, Hyman, Kane take a step its over.

Better is an understatement. He's been the culprit on several goals that at this time in his career, should be routine.
He doesn't even look like a top 4 out there...more like a 5/6. I don't care how many minutes he's playing....he hasn't stood out positively all series imo

Last year the excuse is he was hurt, yet his level of play looks identical this year

Considering who it was that reffed the game I thought it was the best reffed game in the series so far.

Hands down. The first 3 were a farce, but that was finally an evenly called game

I have to say something about Desharnais.
I dont know why but he isnt playing the game that makes him an effective NHL player.
Instead of playing the man like he usually does he has been playing the puck. The other thing is that he is holding on to the puck too long. I can only assume that he is in his head too much due to the intensity of the playoffs.
I think it was the right decision by Woody to bench him but I also think that its important for him to re-establish his game.

I think he’s scared to play his game because of the officiating. The refs spent 3 games looking for excuses to call anything they could on us. He got a couple weak calls that burned us, so now the whole team is having to avoid physical play

The Marcel Dionne quip was hilarious.

So good. I love the confidence considering the Kings just had their best period of the series (and arguably only the second period of the series that they controlled)

For more on how that compensation rule used to work, it was designed to help small market teams with smaller payrolls when players would get scooped up by teams with huge payrolls. So in the Leetch instance, New York had a large payroll and wouldn't have got any compensation for losing Leetch which was a concern at the time. By sending him to a small market team, that team would get compensation so they used this loophole to get at least something out of it.

Ultimately Sather came out of it smelling like roses. Basically got a 2nd rounder and 4th rounder for 2 months of Petr Nedved and they ended up signing Leetch anyways.

Kostin got this treatment at times during the regular season as well. Maybe Woodcroft views him and Janmark as a pair, I don't know.

He's also someone the refs seem to have their sights on so maybe he was worried about that, too.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he intentionally wanted to tone down the physicality in the game. Still a puzzling decision imo, but as long as it doesn't become a trend, not too much to complain about after that win.

I thought the first was the Kings' best period, not the third, but otherwise agreed.

Oh please. If the game was called the exact same aside from one play where say McDavid bodychecked Danualt off the puck, and they called it a trip, this entire board would be screaming collusion.

The call they made on Fiala was utterly disgusting and potentially saved the series

Sather helping is old team out. Oilers got a draft pick because Leetch left of vis Free Agency.

If you follow the overall trade tree, Sather actually leveraged it into a fleecing really. Gained a 2nd and 4th rounder for 2 months of Petr Nedved and still got the player (Leetch) anyways. Granted, since it was a compensatory pick Edmonton really was only out the 4th rounder and some minor leaguers of little consequence. Nedved almost got them into the playoffs that year, so I'm sure Lowe was fine with the overall trade tree.

The first was definitely better on the scoreboard, but I thought they controlled the play much more in the 3rd. We couldn’t get anything going.

The contact is to Draisaitl's legs, Fiala pushes Draisailt's legs out with his stick which is also between Draisaitl's legs. Why are you not bringing up Fiala's flop on the holding call in the first? Holding that happens constantly throughout the game and it was like he was shot by a sniper falling down. Nevermind, though it was a penalty anyway but Anderson majorly sold Hymans slash.

The playoffs last year and games again in the playoffs this year is why I laugh when people say Draisaitl is only good because of McDavid. If we are being honest, he's been worst case even the last 2 playoffs but most will say better than him. Draisaitl is a bonafide superstar and elevates his game when it matters. Such a pleasure to have him on our team.

I'm hoping the boys play their best game of the series in game 5. It's a massive game and we have the team to take it. We just have to execute. Super proud of Soupy for coming in. We don't win that game without his performance. Happy for Kane and Hyman to get goals as well. We need them as well in game 5. Hopefully RNH can pick it up a little offensively as well. What a massive win, they could have quit at 3-0 and been down 3 games to 1 but that was the most important win of the year and they didn't quit.

Did you watch the Oilers get screwed by the same calls in Games 1-3 ? The reffing script flips ONCE after going the Kings way numerous times and all of sudden people are clutching their pearls.

Plus as I said before, if the Kings could kill a penalty they wouldn't have allowed 2 goals on 2 chances in the 2nd period.

When Leon is playing at this level he's better than McDavid even. He's an absolute 200 foot force at the moment.

Have to get more shots from distance on Korpisalo. He moves very well laterally and when the puck is in close but he's let in a few stinkers on wristers now
Agreed, the Kane, Hyman, and Kostin goals were all extremely similar. Even the Mcdavid goals were similar too, although those are harder to compare.

Just fly down the wing and raise the puck.

He's also, as most goalies are, fairly susceptible to shots going against the grain when he's moving sideways/across. Trying to get him moving and shooting where he used to be is probably a good idea.

The GDT on the mains was quite funny to read through.

-After we made the goalie change a whole bunch of Leafs' fans came in and started supporting the Oilers (Campbell must have been well liked over there)

-The weak Arvi on Drai call was the reason they lost (it was a weak call but they did squander a 3 goal lead and couldn't kill a penalty)

-Avs fans really hate the Oilers (are they insecure about the possibility of having to face us later on?)

-Bouchard 'dove' into the boards in OT (what?)

Maybe I am talking out my ass but it's a fast game out there and desharnais seems to be struggling with it. Kings being a counter attacking team I think it just doesn't suit his style. He would be much more valuable in another situation butni think broberg is a better option given he is a much better skater and can get himself out of trouble more easily. Kings aren't spending a ton of time cycling around the offensive zone so desharnais skills are lessened.

For sure. The team was worse in the 3rd period until the final 5. While LA had the better of the play in the first 10 minutes of the first, but Edmonton was at least generating a bit, until the wheels fell off in the last 5 minutes.

In the third, Edmonton had absolutely nothing and was being peppered really until Kane's shot.
