CIHL is a full contact high level beer league. Lots of sponsors, flashy website, nice program, etc. But still a beer league for now. Some of the guys may get a stipend, but most have day jobs. Some have pretty high level hockey in their past...former NHL player(s) sub in on occasion (the one I know, his brother is a top 10 scorer in that league). Some are old, but the 67yo is a fluke...league admin did not enter a real DOB for him. Same with the 15yo. The 16yo is on the HK U18 team, and one of the stated goals is to help develop Chinese hockey.
Same with the highest level league in Singapore...but "no hitting." Some of the guys have pedigree either through their own younger play, or through siblings (including older brother of last years AHL co-Rookie of the year).
Asia League is a pro league, a bit lower than ECHL in my eyes. But getting better. They are expanding as well, so opportunities might be available. Also, with the next two winter Olympics over here, I expect the sport to grow quite a bit over the next decade. China will funnel a ton of money at development in order to field a competitive team, and that will spread.
Did you send me an email not too long ago about pro hockey in Thailand?
