You want a crazy roommate story? I had this happen last year. Buckle up:

My old roommate was moving out at the end of December 2020, and I was having a terrible time filling the space. Finally resorted to a Facebook ad, and got a guy who seemed to be pretty quiet. I figured he was a young kid, his dad was with him when he did the interview/inspection, and he said he had been in a car accident and was on disability, and worked part time at Wendy's, so he would have no problem making the rent. I took him in, and he was a kind of shitty roommate for about six months. Left trash everywhere, spent most of his time chain smoking on the patio, which stunk up the house a bit. I suspected he was smoking inside, which was against the lease terms, but couldn't prove it.

And then, about six months in, the screaming started. One day he was out on the back porch just screaming obscenities at the top of his lungs. One of the neighbors called the cops, and when they arrived and tried to talk to him he ran off. I talked to them for a bit, gave them some info, but they said he wasn't breaking any laws so they couldn't chase him down. Well, a week later, the screaming started again, eventually getting to the point where he spent all day (and all night) pacing around the condo yelling at people who weren't there. "SHUT UP! F*** YOU, YOU'RE WRONG, LEAVE ME ALONE!" I tried to talk to him, because around this time he stopped paying the rent, too, but he acted like I wasn't there, didn't even acknowledge my existence. I ended up putting a lock on my door and sleeping with mace next to my bed because I didn't feel safe living with him.

Apparently he didn't tell me that he was schizophrenic when he moved in, and he was either off his meds or never on them to begin with, and he had a psychotic break. The cops were called multiple times for wellness checks, but he always ran away from them when they came, and since he wasn't violent (yet), they couldn't forcibly detain him. This went on for weeks, until finally the landlords gave him an eviction notice to move out by the end of the month for violating the noise complaints clause of the lease. One day, I came home from work and all his stuff was gone, but he left an ungodly mess in his room, and especially his bathroom, which was gag worthy. I had to hire professional cleaning services to deal with all of it.

Thankfully, for the last year now I've had a very quiet college student living in the space, who pays the rent on time and never screams. But that was the last time I will ever get a roommate without Googling their name; turns out this dude was actually in his 30s, and had spent some time in jail for taking his girlfriend and her friend hostage with a knife, apparently during another schizophrenic episode in PA. So I had a psychotic man who had been jailed for knife crimes living in my house for six months. That was an adventure.
God damn. I'd much rather take the dumbshit, passive aggressive, thief over the schizoprenic with a prior felony.

Yeah, he had a really unique last name. One day in the middle of all the freaking out I decided to Google him and lo and behold, the third result was a news article about him. I blame only myself for not thinking of doing that before he moved in. Rookie mistake, all my previous roommates had been people I knew and trusted already.

I don't know when this story happened but it's at this point I'd have phoned the police because he really doesn't sound like a well person.

I've accumulated enough savings, by living with a parent for a bit longer, to avoid roommates by now. I lived with a group of 6-7 people in a large house once, and another time moved in with three chicks, and both times I hated it. They weren't even doing anything wrong, I just didn't like having to meet their friends, hear a lot of noise, or get complained about by my own noise or my dog. I moved back in with my mother, where there are basically no rules anyway (better than with roommates), saved up some money and finished school, and moved out without roommates. I also improved my relationship with my mom by doing this which helped me financially. Long story short, life is better without roommates.

I once had a house mate who would play world of warcraft late at night. This wasn't a problem at all until one night he started to scream his head off while playing the game. I know nothing about world of warcraft but what I gathered from it was that he was killed by some kid with a lower level or something. He lost his mind, I could hear him smashing his keyboard on his desk, screaming "YOU f***ING CHEATING f***" or something of that ilk. Then he kicked his room door off the hinges and launched his computer monitor (non-flat screen monitor, old school CRT shit) down the hallway (right by my room door). Pretty great way to be woken up at 3am.

I called for multiple wellness checks to try to get him on a mental health stay... He always ran from the police though, and since he wasn't committing any crimes they couldn't chase him. I was hoping that once he moved out (I'm pretty sure he's living with his dad) he would get help, but I haven't heard from him since he left, aside from one weird text he sent me full of random emojis.

I genuinely hope he gets help and gets on some meds to get this under control. He sounded really unhappy and upset by the voices he was hearing. He was a shitty roommate but not really a bad dude.

This is not surprising, even though a lot of antipsychotic drugs work, they still have pretty bad side-effects and sometimes people just stop taking them. Only one generation III drug has been improved by the FDA and that's aripiprazole which is used to treat schizophrenia, hopefully more get approval soon.

Anybody have any experience of insect infestations? It's 2AM and I'm lying here convincing myself that the noises that have been coming out of my wall the past week and a half are wasps.

I got a PS5 for shits, pretty much just because I'm bored and they're difficult to get. So it's on you motherf***ers.

Anybody have good ideas on first games to get? With the caveat that I don't like your average multiplayer FPS'.

NHL22 looks like it's currently on sale in the store, so I might as well get that. Beyond that, I was thinking maybe GT7, FIFA, and eventually F1 22.

Elden Ring is the best game of this generation so far, so if you're into action RPG's that one should be a no-brainer. Other personal favorites: Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Horizon: Forbidden West, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Guardians of the Galaxy, Resident Evil 8 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. You should also download Astro's Playroom. It's free and a pretty awesome bite-size platformer filled with cool PlayStation references.

I've been enjoying Days Gone on my Steam Deck so far, but if you haven't played the Uncharted series or Last of Us you should play those.

I did play a couple of the Uncharted games. I considered the new one, but I might end up passing. They were pretty good.

Uncharted 4 was the best. I haven't played anything on PS5 though. I had to borrow my friend's PS4 to play through the Uncharted games.

Well this certainly tops the tenants who wrecked our old townhome in Denver to the tune of $10,000+.

Oof, I dunno about that. Technically the guy still owes me about $400 for stuff the security deposit didn't cover, but I consider that just the cost of never having to deal with him again. But $400 is one thing, 10k is a whole new realm of shit.

Well, just to make a long story...slightly less long, they literally let their labrador piss and shit all over the carpet to the point where we had to rip it all out, pad and all, and seal the entire base off with Kilz. They also let their two young children write on EVERY single wall in the entire townhome. Thankfully the next tenants were perfectly fine--they spilled something on the carpet but that was the extent of the damage they did, paid their rent on time. The only bad experience there was that I had to deal with two different property management companies (we went it alone with the first nightmare tenants and holy shit was that a mistake) and they were total pains in the ass--did the bare minimum at best, and oftentimes didn't even do that.

Needless to say, I don't care if it nets me free gobs of income for the rest of my life, I will NEVER be a landlord ever again.

Word to the wise, when the tenants show up to pay the initial deposit in cash (because as we later found out they didn't have a bank account because their credit rating was lower than the Rockies road RBI rate) tell them to GTFO.

It's a shame, it was a somewhat affordable little place, first place my wife and I ever bought. Great location too, south Denver, just across the street from Cherry Hills Village, so there were plenty of great paths to walk the dogs, it wasn't far from a lot of great restaurants, and since we were right next to the Tech Center, my commute was always opposite rush hour traffic. Unfortunately when the economy went to shit in 2008 we had to pack up and head out to Nebraska. We at least made a decent amount back when we finally sold it.
