This is small potatoes compared to the sh!tstorm when the Hurricanes failed to sign Zach Parise.
The only real loss that hasn't really been replaced is Semin.
- We lost a top-4 defenseman in Sekera and grabbed Wisnewski to replace him.
- We lost Gleason and it's expected that Hanifin will play in a similar role (on the roster chart, at least).
- Tlusty didn't contribute jack-all last year, so literally any warm body could replace him.
Wisniewski isn't going to replace Sekera.
He shoots right. As does Faulk. Unless you're going to put one of them on the off side, they won't play at ES- and given those look to be the Hurricanes' two best defensemen, handicapping one seems a poor idea.
Wisniewski is replacing Bellemore/Murphy. Which is a pretty good upgrade on the 2nd pairing. Unfortunately, this means Sekera's top pairing minutes get replaced by one of Hainsey, Liles or Hanifin. Which is pretty bad. And I liked Liles with Faulk last year.
Still, Steve Smith knew what he was doing. His defensive system was the best by a Hurricanes' defense in a long time.
Now Semin's only difficult to replace if you believe he was going to put up 40-50 points this upcoming year. If you don't, then any 2nd/3rd line tweener could effectively fill his spot in the lineup.
Then you have a 2nd/3rd line tweener on the 1st line.
Fortunately, Francis beat us to the punch, because they have 2nd/3rd line tweener (and I'm being generous) Nestrasil on the top line, by sheer freaking default.
That offense looks bad. Not Buffalo bad, but bottom-5 bad. I hope he does a trade to get someone.
