Sure, if you’re still playing 2017 it’s worth $30. It’s not immensely different, but the quality of life improvements and things like unique celebrations, skating styles etc. spice it up a bit. Plus guys like Laf and Buch and Kakko have their likeness in the game. It’s $30. At the end of the day, it’s not something I’d hesitate to spend. If you’re hurting for cash, a video game probably isn’t a good investment. If you’re just unsure whether it’s a game worth getting, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in spending $30 on it. You may disappointed that the game hasn’t come as far in 4 iterations as virtually anyone would have hoped, but that’s a different story, if that makes sense.
I personally think that the games are massively frustrating by how much they haven’t progressed and the simple things that should be in the game that still aren’t. The physics, hopefully will be a next generation improvement but there’s still so much small stuff that could be better. That said, I do find the AI to be marginally better than 20, and a nice step up from older generations. The skating and puck pick ups are better, deking is more fluid, the new BAP is fun for a while. Definitely a nice change up they hopefully build on. All in all, it’s frustratingly satisfactory. It’s hockey, and it’s still the best iteration of hockey to date. It just sucks that they’ve done so relatively little over the years.
