Agreed, but we do all we can to guarantee just the same. A team running on little capital hardly needs to hire a “superstar” at the expense of depth.
I agree, I don't see AM's coming here. He will be almost 28 looking for a long term deal that will take him out of his prime, something we don't need, unless he takes a home town discount, which he won't.

Schmid was the best regular season and best playoff goalie for NJ...so why start Vanecek?

What gives with these playoffs and the usual 3-2 or 2-1 games? Blowout after blowout.

Deficit of goaltending talent in combination with more and more advanced stats based coaching. The evolution of the league also continues as most traditional bottom sixers are gone and replaced with lighter, more skilled players.

I'm not sure there has been a really good series yet and now both East series are probably gonna get nearly a week off.
Me either…. gotta wonder what the casual fan, that always loves NHL playoffs is thinking.

I “liked” this, but don't like it. Wouldn’t be on this forum right now, if I did.

I always think this is where the teams who zag can become surprise champs. Those Kings championship years are such a good example. While everyone was chasing the next Patty Kane they built further into what they already had.

I think those teams who tailed the Kings found some success for a bit (STL, NYR at the time, but when there are more and more players that are highly skilled that can skate most NHL'ers in circles you have to adapt a bit. So I think we are seeing teams find success with these new types of power forwards.
Svechnikov, Rantanen, the Tkachuks and to a lesser extent even players like Toffoli, Verhaeghe and Tuch all kind of hit this mode of guy who can score, get the puck in dirty areas and still skate well enough to defend the fastest in the league.

I think Florida will open the eyes of many GMs. Every line has a great mix motor, skill, and goalscoring/playmaking. In fact up and down that line up motor is king. I hope this is how we build. They had BY FAR the most SOG all season in comparison to other teams, they are absolutely relentless and had they not had goaltending issues and such a massive roster/coaching turnover I think they would have been 2nd in the East.

Even the back and forth between EDM and VGK should give pause to GM's who are just trying to get faster and more skilled.

And to your first statement, the lack of good goaltending in the 2nd round has really made this round uninteresting. Bob and Otter are the best goalies right now and one of those two has given up 4+ goals in two games.

Just a bit more on the goalies:
BOS - probably the top goalie in the league this season, but had ups and downs all career, with more downs than ups (of course that was on BUF though)
COL - a back up who got a promotion and was up and down most of the season
NYR - elite young goalie
NYI - elite young goalie
LAK - kind of a shit show all year. I think Korpisalo will be good for him. I don't think he was ready for EDM or found his groove with the team before the series started
MIN - GusBus had an amazing season. Hard to say if he is actually good or if it was goalie voodoo (see Ullmark). But he wasn't proven in the playoffs or anything.
TB - Elite goalie. Still probably the best in the league, although Sorokin is close
WPG - A guy I think could make a huge rebound on a better team. Had a pretty nice season too and has performed in the playoffs. Couldn't keep his team in the game enough.

So out of the teams who were bounced out round one we have 3 I'd call elite, two goalies who had amazing seasons but are less proven (Ullmark, Gus), a former elite goalie, and two questionable starters.

Currently we have
FLA - A former top goalie whose former issue was struggling in the playoffs (hilarious to see that script turn around). Also, a third string goalie managed to keep FLA in games vs BOS before Bob came back.
TOR - A former backup and not the goalie TOR was expecting to be playing right now. I've always liked Sammy but this was truly his first year as a starter.
CAR - two good goalie options (btw lets not forget our favorite backup was the one who helped them pass Sorokin). Andersson has always been great not amazing, and Raanta as we know can play as good as any goalie when he is able to play
NJD - not even sure who is going to be starting any more. But all three are inexperienced in the starter position
EDM - The guy they paid money to start is the guy sitting on the bench and the rookie is playing like a decent rookie goalie.
VGK - See NJD expect their actual start is somewhat decent but injured.
DAL - young elite goalie
SEA - Well Grubs has been good in the past but was horrific this regular season. Not sure what to make of that haha.

Are we getting to a crossroad where we are seeing a big change of the guards with the top goalies and in another year or two half the guys in this will be good, or are there just not many great goalies in the league right now?

I don't there are more than 5 or 6 great starting goalies in the League.

I'm starting to feel like old man yelling at clouds as I write that it's round 2 and still playing like an October game. Definitely the most boring 1st two rounds I can recall.
