I really wish we had AHL fancystats because I bet McIlrath is doing a great job down there but no one knows about it. He didn't play for DET yesterday, and he's not playing tonight.

Somebody give the kid a real shot for once.

McIlrath finally got into a game last night. Got owned on the shot attempt battle. 1 assist, secondary, and ELEVEN hits in 16 minutes of ice time (again, owned on shot attempts).

Wings fans have been reeeally hyping up Cholowski on the main boards this preseason too (best player/ready to be in the top 4 right now, etc)

He was similarly terrible, specifically in the shot attempt department, in the game against Pittsburgh on the 19th. He got a lot of TOI, though. Could just be another one of those eye-test and how much the player actually plays and is talked about on the broadcast going hand in hand.

I mean, when you watch a game, you can easily predict what people will be talking about in the thread based solely on who Sam and Joe are talking about, and who gets highlighted during replay packages. It's why the people who are at the game, and the people who are watching on tv, generally have different takes about what they 'saw'.

Sidenote: Two really good games from Rasmussen in the shot-attempt department. Current hot taek of mine is that he'll be the guy everyone thinks Greenway is.

I watched the last half of two red wings games this preseason and my takeaways were that those 2 didn’t really stand out either way (Rasmussen had a real easy tap in goal in one of them), their announcers are all sorts of terrible, and they’re going to be very very bad this year

We're missing an entire game's worth of data, but the preseason play looks so much better from an advanced stats perspective. I don't expect us to be top-10 anywhere, but you can tell that the structure is getting there and that the team looks more engaged overall. Again, it's only preseason, but the trends are at least pointing in the right direction.

Tough to take too much from preseason. Will be very interesting to see how the yutes look, especially considering how some of them struggled in the shot attempt department last season.

So, Quinn has apparently decided that Staal-Pionk is going to be a thing.
  • Staal barely played with Pionk at all in the pre-season.
  • Staal played with DeAngelo and Shattenkirk.
  • Staal managed to put up a "respectable" 47.62 CF% 5v5 in his three games.
  • His CF% in 17:52 with DeAngelo was 66.67% and his CD/60 was +40.30.
  • His CF% in 17:42 with Shattenkirk was 44.12% and his CD/60 was -13.56.
  • In the remaining 6:38 his CF% was 7.14 and his CD/60 -108.54.
  • Of those 6:38, 3:36 was spent with Pionk achieving a CF% of 12.50 and a CD/60 of -100.00.

Marc Staal - Teammates - On Ice - Natural Stat Trick

Don't misunderstand me; I'm definitely not saying that Staal-Pionk will continue being net outattempted by 100 per 60 minutes, nor am I suggesting that Staal-DeAngelo will be +40.

I just hope that when Staal-Pionk inevitably gets caved in possession-wise night-in night-out that Mr. Quinn realizes three things:
  1. Marc Staal doesn't belong in the starting lineup
  2. The reason you thought so was probably because he was playing with very good partners in the pre-season
  3. You should be playing DeAngelo every night and continue to increase his minutes if he excels, which I think he will
This is even more frustrating than the start of 2013-14. Strålman at least got to play, even if it was on the 3rd pairing. And honestly, I think DeAngelo might be even better right now than Strålman was then - and I hope this board remembers how high I was on Strålman at the time.

Pionk had a weird preseason. He still doesn’t generate shots, but he doesn’t give them up either. When tied, his numbers were actually fantastic. He had similar trends last season while getting heavier d-zone starts.

Didn’t dive into the linemate effects yet.

Pionk got to play a game with Skjei (61.76 CF%), the rest of the time was the usual fare (37.50 CF%).

A shame you can't separate tied minutes in the WOWYs on NST, was genuinely surprised to see Pionk's 59.09 CF% in ~30 tied minutes since he had ~45 overall minutes. I can't say for sure, but I bet most of the 16.5 minutes he spent with Skjei were tied.

Probably, but it’s at least some form a positive trends, IMO. If he just gets bashed in when we lead, but doesn’t hurt us tied or trailing, just alter his usage. He was a driver in college, which is why I’m not gonna hate on him too much just yet. Sandellin was a good coach.

Holy ****, claim Carrick.

Very good relT impacts last two seasons. Just needs ice time. Better than every RD on our roster not named Shattenkirk.

Disagree with the last sentence, his projections heavily suggest that he's been carried and his pre-NHL record does not indicate significant NHL upside. I wouldn't take him over DeAngelo right now or for the future. Don't get me wrong, a player that can hang with a good partner is valuable. But unlike Toronto we don't have one, let alone two, LDs who can carry a player like him.
