Speculation: The 2026-27 Roster Speculation Thread: Summer Edition - Throw in All The Oars, We're Trading for Battleships

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Ahhhhh…. That makes more sense. What is the difference BUF would have to make up between 4OA and 8OA and Hellebuyck? And could Viggo still be available at 8?
That sounds about right in the gap department, I'd add one of the 4 goalies and that's about it.

Viggo won't be there. He doesn't make it past Calgary.

What do you guys think of a Leafs/Sabres deal around Carlo & Knies? I saw it on X

I think you are looking at just Carlo

Moving Knies only makes sense if Toronto is rebuilding.

They just paid a 29 year old d-man with 1 good season over 8M per. They aren't jettisoning their value forward. They are re-building their defense.

What are you guys thinking is fair for a Knies deal?

Some of us on the Leafs board were thinking 4th overall + Helenius + McLeod.

Feel free to laugh me off your board but just wondering what you all are thinking.
Depending on who is asking for who, will factor in how much of a gap I think this is an overpayment for.

If Toronto is the one trying to get the 4th overall pick, primarily, that's a massive over payment from Buffalo. If this is Buffalo trying to get Knies, primarily, then I believe that would have an influence in how much Sabres management sees in McLeod and Helenius, which in Buffalo's eyes might view it more equal.

But I'm also of the opinion that Knies is closer to having value of #10-#15 picks 1 for 1.

I don't really want Hellebuyck, that's just me trying to call a shot.
Hellebuyck is a great goalie, but he excels in structure. When he's got a predicatable defensive structure in front of him, he's better able to process and anticipate shot locations. The Bruins were like this for years, playing five-on-a-die defense and producing 3 different Vezina winners in that system, and Swayman potentially a fourth.

Buffalo plays a somewhat positionless system where defenders pinch and move freely in the offensive zone and forwards have to play defense. It's very fluid, and from a goalie's point of view, it's harder to predict where shots are coming from. They also tend to come more frequently from high danger areas.

That's not Hellebuyck's strength. If Jarmo is hell-bent on getting a goalie, I'd much rather see a push for Saros and team him with Ellis and Levi.

As Toronto’s new front office puts its mark on this roster, with clear intentions of being a playoff team again in 2027, they are considering almost every option and Knies is caught up in that. A 23-year-old winger with excellent size and upside after a career-best 63-point season, the Maple Leafs are listening to the many calls they’re getting on Knies to weigh the potential returns. While a deadline deal with Montreal nearly came to pass and will be explored again with the Canadiens, there are several other teams with plenty of interest.

Regardless if they trade Knies or not, the Leafs are looking for a buyer in the event John Chayka can hit a home run. That would need to work around a return of two roster players and a draft pick coming back.
