Oh it's also tied to the amount of years? If it's 7 years it will be 4 firsts, if it's 5 years it's the 2 firsts, 2nd and 3rd?
It's tied strictly to the AAV, but with a twist:

Take the total value of the contract -- but divide by FIVE.

So, let's say we sign someone to a 7x$7M offer sheet. That's a 1st and 3rd compensation, right? NOPE.

7 x 7 = 49 / 5 = $9.8M AAV for the offer sheet. Compensation: 2 1sts, 1 2nd, 1 3rd

It's 5 or the length of the contract, whichever is higher. So a short term deal would just be AAV (how Carolina got Kotkaniemi from Montreal, STL got Holloway/Broberg from Edmonton, etc.).

Ok so the max we could offer would be 5 years without hitting the 4 firsts, because likely he would want more than that threshold. Because if you did 11 x 7 / 5 that puts you over at 15.4 AAV

Nope. In order to present an offer sheet to a player, the team presenting the offer must have all of their own picks in the 2027 draft . We don't have our second so we could do the 1st and 3rd max....and then the 4 firsts

Well we could get our 2nds back but at that point, might just rather eat the 4 firsts .

1+2+3, 1+1+2+3 comp do not have to be in the same draft. It can be 28 1+3 and 29 2 as comp.

Similarly it’s 4 1sts over 5 yrs. The losing team doesn’t get to decide which one they can keep.

Sabres can easily do a 1+3 OS this summer.

wgr talking about Parayko this morning, that they heard chatter Parayko was all for the deadline deal, but his agent told him to rethink it. Not sure the source. Maybe something to watch.

Eh, the reporting was that he wanted to think about it. Montgomery said the whole team went out to dinner with him while they were in Seattle that night and collectively talked him out of it.

Edit - the Monty comment about Parayko starts at 17:05 of this pod:

it was on his podcast apparently. something about a 3 team nurse deal. la getting nurse, Keumper and Levi going to edmonton, and Buffalo getting Doumolin and a 3rd? I'll try to find the podcast link
34, 4M aav until 27-28 for 3rd pair, IDK ?

22-23 data (closest I could find), PK looks good

We can't possibly be chasing MORE D. I'd kill myself if Jarmo acquires another defenseman having Kesselring and Metsa already on the bench.
We draft them all and we trade for them all. I'm a huge fan of the defensive side in a football game. I love when the Eagles draft on the defensive side of the ball but for hockey.. it's like c'mon get me exciting forwards. I know how important defensemen are in hockey, I just find trading and drafting for them boring.
