Because this is professional hockey and you’re trying to win
Teams start young, NHL quality players in the AHL to start season all the time. Because they know injuries happen.
Moves don’t happen in a vacuum. They knew what value Kesselring had after his disastrous season and they have done all their amateur scouting. Clearly valued their board’s top 20 over what they could bring back for Kesselring in a player for player deal. Or the value difference of the pick when they try to replace him in trade.

Either way…at least now we can stop seeing people try to excuse how awful he was here and trying to write him down in pen for next season.

Adios
It's not ridiculous to think that Jarmo would see the turn around Samuelsson made and not try to see if Kesselring could make that turn around. It's not an excuse for his play. That's your categorization for the argument counter to yours.

With the Kesseling deal, if the Sabres re-sign everyone to the AFP deals (Krebs, Benson x 7 years, Malenstyn), there's no need to trade Greenway. Not saying that's what Jarmo will do but its the current status:

Krebs - Norris - Thompson
Benson - Ostlund - Doan
Zucker - Helenius - Quinn
Malenstyn - McLeod - Carrick
x Greenway
Kozak, Danforth and Kulich start in Rochester

Samuelsson - Dahlin
Byram - Power
Metsa - Timmins
x Johnson

UPL, Lyon, Ellis

Just under $900K in cap space. This potentially solves the Johnson waiver issue. But there's some more wiggle room in roster projections, since Kesselring's AFP cap figure was 2 x $2.9M

There's absolutely zero reason to keep a 4M player as your 13th forward though. Especially when you consider unused cap space compounds over the season (i.e. if we are 5M under the cap to start the season and remain there until the trade deadline, we'll have effectively 15M to spend at the deadline). The new playoff rules dampen this a bit (you can't ice an 20 man roster in the playoffs over the cap) BUT its better to have the space for flexibility reasons.

Trade him, or failing that, buy him out.

He’s not necessarily the 13th forward. Look at the line combos. Not much more than what they finished the season with, with Carrick in the place of Greenway because I trade Greenway in all my sims. Puckpedia keeps your sim together over time on mobile devices, so when I deleted the trade, he went to the 13th forward spot.

I only ever post lines and pairs for accounting purposes when I run puckpedia sims because people gravitate to line combos and pairs. Which isn’t the point.

almost like the player made a trade request, and it just didnt leak yet. although something like that NOT leaking from Toronto is shocking
According to some reports, Treliving had a trade deal with Montreal for Knies but it was submitted one minute past the trade deadline so it wasn't finalized. Now with new management in Toronto, not clear if trading Knies is still on the table or if the price has gone up.
