The 2024-2025 Roster Thread

Good article here that also mentions Rossi could be a Offer Sheet Candidate

Who would sign him to a 9M offer sheet? Good teams don't have the cap space, and bad teams shouldn't give up 4 1sts.

Maybe Ottawa is a candidate if they feel like he's the final piece.

Below is what started it, from the main trade board.
Hello!

I probably should’ve clarified a bit in that post - Russo specifically mentions Ohgren as a piece he assumes would be going the other way. I don’t think he put Rossi for Peterka out there as an idea but it’s also not that much of a leap either I guess with the bullet points he made. Given that Sabres fans have been pretty adamant about NHL help, not sure Ohgren is a great starting point and would likely be beaten by other teams if Peterka is actually available. Ohgren did play with Ostlund in Sweden if that means anything to y’all (likely not).

What's the return on a JJP offer sheet, about the same ? You never know. The Blues successful offers sheets to Edm (albeit far less compensation) may have put them back in style/thought again ?

Do you and everyone think they could take a run at Marner ? And actually get it done ? Marner would surely want to play with a top center like Pettersson for ie?

There’s a massive difference between paying a player 10M and paying a player 10M whilst giving up 4 1sts.

The vulnerability li e p ln ayers srr li ki e what st louis did by doing max 4rd snf max 3md ckmps.

Quinn fits that situation because buffalo will be tight with cap space if they resign JJP as well as McLeod and byram.

By my estimated if they fill put the roster with signing RFAs before Quinn it might be only $3M in place

No--Not at all-- buffalo does not have the cap space. As vnn I said above. It will be a struggle signing their RFAs

I dont want Marner. Hes too soft and wants more than what I would sign him for.

If I knew that Ehlers would sign with us (and it would cost us 7×$10 I'm sure) I'd trade Peterka.

Would love to reshape our defense completely. Would do Weegar/Bahl/Pachal for Byram/Peterka/Sammy.

Bastian would be a nice free agent pickup.

What's the waivers status with Levi+RyJo+Kozak next season?

According to the CBA:

  • If a player turns 18 between Jan. 1 and Sept. 15 in the entry-draft calendar year preceding the first season of the player’s entry-level contract, they are considered 18.
  • If a player turns 19 before Dec. 31 in the entry-draft calendar year preceding the first season of the player’s entry-level contract, they are considered 19.
  • If a player turns 20 before Dec. 31 in the entry-draft calendar year preceding the first season of the player’s entry-level contract, they are considered 20, and so on.

Ryan Johnson signed May 26, 2023, considered age 21, and has 44 games played in his 2nd season.

Kozak was signed August 18, 2022, considered 20 due to his d.o.b and is finishing his 3rd season with 18 games so far.

Levi signed May 16, 2023, considered 21 and has 39 games in what counts as his third season because they burned a year..

So... trying to cross-reference all of those things, I THINK it comes out like this: RJ has 36 NHL games left and 1 year. Kozak will be waiver eligible next year. Levi has 21 games and 1 year.

Thanks for the effort with that Chain. So Kozak needs to be on the roster and he is a capable 13th forward and will be cheap.

I think Quinn come back as 3RW, will also be cheap, and we write off 24/25.

Only forward questions then are how long with McLeod sign for and what to do with Peterka. If McLeod is good for 4 years you gotta lock that up (4x$5.25? ). I'd be pretty shocked if Peterka wants more than a bridge deal. If he wants out you need a first-line forward to replace him.

If we move on from Byram and Peterka and Sammy and Clifton we can afford a top-line forward ($9 to $10) and then have around 14 to 15 for three defensemen.

Just as McLeod was targeted (young C with team control) we should target a D this offseason. Kevin Bahl would be amazing (why would CGY trade him I guess) but something like that. I'd overpay in a trade for this top-4 next season

Bahl/Dahlin
Power/Weegar

The medical staff that said they are comfortable acquiring Norris are they the same staff that were against Eichel getting the surgery?

Maybe its time to get new medical staff?

Not trying to be sarcastic for a change but if we resign McCleod and/or Peterka like people will advocate for then how long can you realistically not just keep the same band together? Their extension will put us near the cap with no external additions. Something has to give wether its trading Sammy or Peterka....finding a taker for the corpse of 6k....even a taker on lafferty's remaining year idk. We are bordering on just running same band back with new shitty songs.....

Kris Baker in his latest podcast with Fairburn mentions he would like to have the physicality of Will Cuylle of the Rangers for the Sabres

Would Cuylle interest members here in the summer as part of deal (along with someone like Schneider) for JJP ?

Yes. We got talent in the pipeline to reproduce Peterka’s production. But I don’t see any power forwards in the prospect mix. Sign me up.

But if he is the next guy that does not want to play here, is not a culture fit, and won't sign an extension you will have to move on.
All of this shyte about him not wanting to play here was speculation from a hack blogger. He has not said that. Start with the assumption that he wants to get paid. If KA doesn’t want to do that then he will be on the market. But it doesn’t have anything to do with wanting out. Everyone on this team wishes they were somewhere else. Few have any kind of leverage to make that happen. You want to make to make people want to be here? Field a winning team and you do nothing do that trading a point producer for a slug. Can he be traded? Sure. But not for that value.
