I'm finding it harder to really care about this top 6 Forward, top 4 RHD situation and every other Sabres talking point. Nothing ever seems to change for this organisation. We just keep needing more and more because good things stop working constantly. I don't have a favourite player on this team anymore, I haven't bought a new Sabres jersey since 2014 and it was a blank jersey because I wasn't sure if I wanted Reinhart or Eichel's name on it. I haven't gotten excited for Sabres hockey in who knows how long because no matter what good happens, its followed by disappointment. Any and all good will achieved within a few games quickly becomes fleeting. I don't understand how teams can go 16-5-2 in the opening of the season and finish with 60 or more wins. As a fan of those teams, What's it like watching more wins than losses? Whats it like when the strength of schedule is always in your favour because you are the apex predator of the league. What's it like that when you take a loss in between those 60 wins where u can go to bed knowing your team will be fine. Whats it like to watch the standings only because you want to win the Presidents trophy?
Think about the generation of kids in Buffalo the Sabres have lost who have become Golden Knight fans, or Panthers fans or any other successful team playing a good brand of hockey because the Sabres have been miserable to watch for more than a decade now. If you think about the age of the players being drafted, none of them have ever seen winning hockey in Buffalo, if they had they would have been too young to remember.
How do you teach kids coming into the league the pride of wearing the Sabres logo when the only players who could have taught that and passed it down were jettisoned away for a massive scorched earth tank job that failed to acquire the true target in McDavid? Kids are coming into an organisation that is mired in losing and we are hoping they can rewrite history by making this a winning franchise but these kids are only losing and struggling to find ways to win, struggling to find wins on back to backs struggling to find consistency to the point of what are they suppose to pass down to the kids coming into the organisation? You have losing kids teaching new kids on how to win? Its a recipe for disaster.
This is the cycle we are in and it reminds me of the Browns, the Giants, the Titans and the Jets. Teams stuck in a cycle of losing trying to find ways to win by shipping out good players and those players finding success on other teams (Saquon Barkley) being the biggest notable. He's in interviews saying hes finally having fun playing.
Whats the common denominator between those teams/us and the good teams.
Ownership. You saw how dysfunctional the Giants were letting Saquon walk and him going to the Eagles by watching Hard Knocks, then later releasing Daniel Jones who they doubled down on in the show. Look at the drama in New York with the Jets and ownership saying they dont want Rodgers but the coach saying he's there to stay. Look at Jerry Jones fumble that Cowboys organisation into the ground, sure Cowboys have had some success with the playoffs but how many playoff games have the won?
Being at .500 is not good enough for year 5 of Adams and coming up on year 14 of Pegula. Something needs to change, either a philosophy in ownership or new ownership. Adams should not be here anymore after his numerous failures to address this team in any meaningful way. Pegula needs to step back or leave.
