GDT: The 2021 NHL Entry Draft Thread! Round 1, 8pm EST on ESPN2!

Pretty easy decision to make when you know if you're not a decent playoff team you have no job there. I mean Benning is banking on OEL turning it around. If he doesn't he loses his job, but Vancouver is hung with a pretty awful contract for a long time, really a few of them might turn out that way, I guess we will see. They have talent, but this is a pretty easy move to see from a hot seat GM, he won't be there for the consequences if it goes really poorly.

The haul seems a little better than I thought once I saw the full details. I don't know the market like a GM does but I can't help but wonder where it's at based on the transactions we've seen. My perception of "leverage" has really changed the past few weeks.

Was Tatar really much more than a fringe NHL player most of his career?
If you call being a second line winger as "fringe", sure.

Plenty of other guys that size like Point, Kuch, Kane, Krug, Aho, Gourde, Marchessault, etc. Just didn't want to use someone with "elite" skills as an example.

From what I've seen Berggren's skating is better than Tats and his skill level is comparable. I like what he did in the SHL, but I'm not ready to call him "elite" so I used a lesser example.

Ok not fringe. Mediocre. Playing second line and pp minutes and averaging a little more than half a point a game ( in many seasons less) is hardly a standout career.

At any rate it's not that difficult to find players of that calibre. And he doesn't put up numbers to warrant being a 2nd liner on a regular basis. At least not on a very good team.

These trades are all over the place value-wise, going to be one of the most interesting off-seasons in a long time.

The question was whether or not a player that size can make it in the league.... not what Tatar's value is.

I expect Berggren to be a second line winger based on what I have seen so far. I don't see his size being a major barrier.

In case you haven't noticed, the Wings are not a "very good" team. It takes a lot more pieces to get there, and Berggren may be one of the pieces. I maintain optimism on the kid, at least until we get a better look this season.

It was tongue in cheek....mostly. Im at the point where I can get behind just about anyone they pick at 6. Except maybe Clarke
Clarke is off my list, and I hope he's off of Stevie's.

If the Wings are having trouble teaching Raz how to skate, then they aren't going to succeed with Clarke. Let a team with a better development program take the kid.

Thank god we have Stevie Y as GM and not Benning.

Yea it's a lot of fun when you have complete confidence in management. It doesn't matter who we take at 6 tbh, if Stevie and co think that kid is the BPA than I'm good with it. We could go way off the board and my heart wouldn't skip a beat.

Holland, not so much.

Sorry. I get what you mean. I just hope we're going to eventually set the bar a little higher than a Tatar like player on the second line. Like you said the Wings haven't been a very good team with that standard.

Dang...ESPN brining out Sam Cosentino and the Rangers former GM, Gorton, to help with their draft coverage.

Anyone else want Buffalo to come out and make a weird pick with the 1OA? Like Hughes or Sillinger or something weird?

I'm betting they swipe Eklund. Then with the 13th overall I think they go for Lucius.

Poor guys...that team has a defense corps that looks about as bad as the 2019-2020 DRW.
