I don't see what a Hank announcement could even be unless he's retiring today. And I highly doubt he would do it on deadline day.

Would they really hold a press conference and be like yeah we're trading him or yeah we're buying him out at the end of the year? I'm not being facetious, I'm really asking, I just don't know.

I think any substantive change in Lundqvist's position would be seen as press conference worthy by the front office. Whether it's a trade, shutdown for the season, whatever else.

Henrik moving on and the Rangers probably caving on a contract Kreider would be just a double whammy
or maybe Kreider decided to take less? I mean if he was traded we would have heard it already. I mean when we traded Mac and cally we heard it way before a presser

So that's jsut as random then because if the pieces are in place sooner why not just move things up?

It's not random. Two things line up: cap space and kids entering their prime. What's random here?

And pieces are not in place. If anything, all 3 of their top 10 picks underwhelmed: Lias is done, Kravtsov had a mediocre season in lower leagues and Kakko has yet to show anything big in the NHL. The McDonaugh trade produced very little in the NHL so far. When all these players are done developing and hit their prime, we'll see about speeding up.

All that happened is that the Rangers threw $20/yr at free agents. That isnt reason to throw $7/yr more at someone whose equivalent is available as a UFA every year.

Let’s be honest, if the Rangers were in the position the Islanders are, and Gorton made the deal Lou just did, this board would go nuclear.

As I said earlier, the Islanders are an aging group, with several contracts that will tie them down in the near future. It makes much more sense for them to try and go for it now.

Alright so best to start looking at 11 still.

But everybody needs to not freak out if we haven’t had it happen by 11:15

pushing back practice to hold a press conference about a contract extension sounds really unlikely but I can't shake this feeling that they really want to keep Kreider and will do it at a cost.

Yeah, the logistics for a same-day re-scheduling of practice provides enough of a ripple that I would have to imagine this presser has some weight in the org.

So options:
1.) We have resigned kreider, blah blah, give the c blah blah, and we believe in our team rn
2.) Hank has meant a lot to the organization, which is why we mutually agreed that we do not want him to be treated this way, give him opportunity, traded.
3) hank retires, we love him blah blah
4.) We believe in our team but this is stilla rebuild.
5) we have invested in david ayres to be our starting goaltender for the forseeable future.
Edit: kreider traded

What's random is to pick a timeline that looks good on paper but is not being backed up by the product on the ice. As you said, top picks are not a given so it seems like you are kind of proving my point-- keep known entities as much as possible because they are just that-- known!

How is that? I don't see it at all. Hank's contract finishes next year and over the course of 6 year we will need to give raises to pretty much everyone on the roster sans Panarin.
But the biggest bottleneck would be next season.
