I really lIke Laine. From what i've seen, he has Ovi's toolkit (size, speed, hard accurate and fast clapper, deceptive wrist shot, tenacity) with the professional hard working 2 way mindset of a Jere Lehtinen. I think he'll be a very good nhler for a long time.

I think there is some potential for superstar there, but I think worst case is a 20 goal second liner.

He forechecks well, has a very pro game, battles on the boards, back checks well.

This is a player. I like him more than Mathews.

Probably not a guy we're going to target but you have to like the kind of game Jonathan Dahlén plays. Seems incredibly underrated in draft rankings. Leads his team in scoring as an 18 year old playing in a men's league. Had 2 assists in the last regular season game to help his team just barely making the playoffs too. I would not be averse of picking him with our 2nd round pick if he is still there. Our forward depth is quite bad and while this is another "skilled forward" I think he could become a very good player, maybe the future 2nd line LW behind Hall even. Even though he's on the smaller side at 5'11 (close to 6ft) he has a good motor and is not afraid to go to the tough areas. Far from a perimeter player. Great edgework, really shifty. Reminds me a lot of Nikolaj Ehlers actually. Hard to believe he is ranked in the 2nd round.

If the pick ends up 4th or 5th, and we can't turn that into a NHL top 4 D, I'd really love to trade down to 8-12 or so and pick up another asset. Grab Sergachev or Fabbro there. Not feeling the love for Juolevi, came away pretty unimpressed in limited viewings. Chychrun couldn't possibly slip to 8...right?

Just don't see the point in adding Tkachuk or Nylander, and don't think Dubois is really the right move for us either.

It's an interesting draft that depends heavily on whether we end up winning one of the lottery spots, IMO.

Center depth of RNH, McDavid, Drai and Matthews would be literally disgusting. Have them as 4/6 of our top 6 and if a center goes down, that's okay got a few more

Todd; so who wants to be first line centre today?
Matthews; Me!
Nuge; I'd certainly relish the challenge.
Draisaitl: I already know you're not picking me and I said I'd rather play wing then 3rd line grinder.
McDavid:....i mean...technically....im the best at hockey....so...?
Todd; it looks like Conner wins again.

...

Our 4th best center would be a #1 center on a lot of NHL teams

I'm praying we're able to win a lot of games down the stretch, finish in the 5-7 slot and win the lottery and watch HF meltdown.

So lets assume we improve from here on out and end up with the third pick. Who would we draft? (Matthews and Laine are both gone and we can't trade the pick)

I would be happy with any of Puljaarvi, Tkatchuk, Chycrun, Dubois or Juolevi. I don't think there is a huge difference in them to be honest. I think Juolevi brings things we are lacking in the system more than the others, but it would be a reach as we could trade down and get him in the 5-8 range.

I'm guessing Chiarelli goes with Tkatchuk or Dubois though, they seem like Chiarelli type players.

im hoping we can turn those 3 3rds into decent depth players.

also really hope they use one of them on Sawchenko from MooseJaw every time ive seen him play live he has been great and it never hurts to have a goalie with potential in the system. I would guess he ends up going in the 2nd round though his stock seems to be on the rise.

I have been saying trade the pick all along but... boy Matthews/Laine is pretty enticing. Doubt we finish in 30th though, so would need another minor miracle to win the lotto.

Trade down and get Chychrun or Dubois.

I was going to say Dubois also. I've only seen him once (the prospects game) but he looks exactly like the type of forward the Oilers need, a Jaime Benn type. Loves going to the net, tons of skill, and puts an emphasis on 2 way play.
Again, this is only based on my one viewing and reports I've read of the kid.
He might even be gone by 3 at this rate so I don't know if I'd trade down if that's who they are targeting.

Puljujarvi just seems like another fancy dan so I'm not too interested in him, Tkachuk just seems kind of meh to me (reminds me of JVR) and any non-Ekblad Dman will take several years to develop so I'd be a little gunshy about drafting a Dman.

Ultimately, I hope they deal the pick mainly because I believe (if it's top 3) that it holds more value than any of the Oilers expendable assets (RNH and Eberle namely).

Might not be Ekblad. But there seems to be 2 Risto. Chychrun and Sergachev. But Chychrun might very well be Ekblad if he didn't get injured. Ekblad wasn't impressive in his draft year either.

I'm a huge Laine proponent, worst case scenario is if we would have the 2nd pick and because its not Matthews trade it away. That would be the worst.

I like Juolevi and Sergachev if we were to trade down... Chychrun is an interesting beast, he could go just about anywhere in this draft... he could slide a little. But he should be a player.

If we land #1 I'd trade it, call me crazy. This is assuming we'd get a HUGE payment involving a #1 RHD of course. If we had #2, I'd like to keep it. Anything else, any mix of trading down/trading out/whatever that maximizes incoming assets is fine by me... Even drafting a solid player if there is no incoming kings ransom would be alright by me..

When is the draft lottery?

Man, the more I look into this draft the less I want the Oilers to have anything to do with it. Move the pick and start winning please.

It's really hard. I'm not a huge fan of Puljujärvi and I don't think he is the guy we need. I think the best move would be to trade down a few spots and add some additional 2nd round picks that you could move for established players, then select whoever is there of Dubois/Chychrun/Sergachyov/Juolevi. Great prospects all of them and guys that would make us better in some area. Dubois with his all-around game and feistiness, Chychrun with his physical tools, Sergachyov with manning the PP and just being an all-around solid defenseman or Juolevi with his puck-moving abilities and transitional game. I honestly don't know who I'd prefer out of those guys. They're all so enticing. I think I might have to still lean Sergachyov though, he can do it all.

except that we still would lose games very often because of no defence whatsoever... if we win the lottery, and can't (or don't to) trade the pick, then one of the existing C's not named mcdavid will be traded for help on D

Eberle/Yak/2017 1st/any 2016 pick can all be had for D. You can land good D or 2 for that package, and also get one in UFA

If we get a top3 pick, I make that pick all day. Each player in top 3 is NHL ready (already playing in pro leagues) and all are big forwards. Crawford just said Matthews was like a young Kopitar. Laine has some Ovechkin in him.

If the pick is 4th or lower, I trade it. Those guys are 2 years off

I also trade 2017 1st for an actual good D. Risky but you burn the boats right now and signal you are ready to move on from drafting high

Laine is a righty sniper who compares to Ovechkin. Thatd be huge in top 6. If you dealt Eberle/Yak hed slide in beautifully
