I don't want to make an argument for Duchene over Stepan; but its not as clear cut as either of you guys would make out.

At this point in their careers, Duchene has the edge over Stepan in his offensive game. He has played at a higher level, more consistently, and for a longer period of time. Stepan's defensive game - in my opinion - is pretty damn far ahead of Duchene's however.

That said - if you're just talking about Duchene's bridge deal, then yea - the comparison is closer. At that point in his career (after '11-'12), he was, however, still younger, still marginally more consistent, and had a slightly higher point per game average than Stepan. Not to mention that he was a high 1st round pick; whether you agree with it or not, that is going to inflate the $$ he gets.

Step shouldn't get Duchene money. Slightly less, and you're talking.
See this is more like it. I wanted a little something more than [statement+exclamation point] which is all too often the basis of an argument round these parts.

I'll admit I was being obtuse on purpose, though

As a casual Avs/Duchene NYR fan who is also high on Stepan and is also a -31- fan, I can say definitively that Stepan will never reach Duchene level offensively. Duchene fluid skating and ability to take space and open ice and turn it into a breakout is superior than anyone on our team. Skating alone, he's capable of the one two step acceleration we see from Kreider. Combined with his skill set and hockey IQ, he uses his skating better than anyone on our team. Defensively, he's decent but certainly not quite fitting for the label of a classic two-way center. Better shot, vision, and most other things. His 11-12 was destroyed by injuries and mentality issues. Otherwise, his numbers would be noticeably better.

The plus for step is obviously the two way game. Also, his maturity and leadership and the way he handles himself mentally. Duchene is more of a dynamic guy similar to Crosby while Step falls in the Bergeron categorization. Hard to compare the two using only numbers. And the numbers do in fact speak to it when you factor in missed games and injuries for Duchene.

Also, -31- is confusing people with advanced sarcasm I think.

Sather told Katie Strang about Stepan being open to a 2 year deal. Oates confirmed it with Brooks. They haven't explored any offer sheet. Derek wants to be a Ranger. He said that on breakup day on Memorial Day. He wants to play his entire career with the Rangers. The Rangers won the philosophical argument on the "bridge" contract as the 2nd contract. Its a matter of money. The cap will be much higher in the summer of 2015 than $64.3M. Stepan will end up getting more than he wants right now when he is arbitration eligible. Stepan will end more than tripling his entry level salary in the 2 year deal.

For starters, Duchene is a much better/faster skater than Stepan, with much better balance(tougher to take off his skates) and much stronger physically.
I don't know where you want to go with this but you're argument would be better served chosing another center to draw a parallel with because Duchene is way out of Stepan's league!

Duchene isn't half the defensive player or leader that Step is. Offensively he is more dynamic, whether that translates into better production that remains to be seen. But for Duchene to be on Step's level overall he will need significantly better offensive numbers and he doesn't have them at this time.

It has already been seen. Duchene is a better offensive player than Stepan and his skill sets are superior than Step's. There's no debating that.

Why do I keep reading about Torts in the 13-14 season thread?

Time to move on folks...
Agreed. i rather focus on our new coach who i really like. The "Clean Slate and Grab It" approach is a good one for our team after the disappointing season last year

Ain't that the truth! I love it when someone else steps up to the plate and complains about stuff near and dear to my heart.

I'm dying to hear some sort of evaluation of individual players from AV.

I mean, he IS kind of right though, isn't he?

UNLESS you're using Twitter as a means to get actual information out to the public (like a charity or world news or hockey news etc) it's really just a way to pump your own tires and post meaningless thoughts that you THINK people want to read about.

Good post, I agree. I really don't care what people had for breakfast or what they are thinking about as they stand in line to get coffee.

That's the neat thing about social network. Not only do you choose to use it BUT you also choose whose lives you care enough about?

and the Hlavac-Nedved-Kovalev line was going to take over the world.

The exact quotes were, "puck on a string".

My favorite training camp development of all-time, Hugh Jessiman, the off-season Golden Gloves Champion!

Maybe the Rangers should retire their #s above the training camp facility to honor their accomplishments.

Because that's totally the type of thing the NHL players I follow tweet about.

Torts is completely in the wrong. There's a middle ground between what he said and Tyler Seguin, and 99% of NHL players are there.

Yeah for the most part, they thank the fans, talk about their off season training and crack a few jokes.

Unlike celebrities who tweet everything.

NHL players are generally pretty good on social media, I agree.

If I was an NFL Coach/GM or an NCAA head coach I would ban twitter on day 1.

I love how Richards looks rejuvenated and energized to be there. I want AV to bring life into these players and allow them to enjoy themselves.

Everyone playing their best during the playoffs is how you win the cup. Under Torts, it was the sense of pride for how hard the team plays and how hard they play for each other that gave them energy to go back and do it all again.

That has its limitations though and I think we saw that last season. We need a team with a bit more energy and jump especially considering how many younger players we have. I hate to bring up the hawks because everyone brings them up as the golden standard but I'd love to see a bit of that excitement and energy their 3rd and 4th line brings and the more upbeat vibe from Hossa, Sharp and co. and especially with Pat Kane who I think is a source of energy the same way that Cally's gritty and focused mentality is a source of energy we feed off of during games.
