He is not Captain material.

i was amazed that a smaller mitch marner was engaged physically and was willing to take a hit to make the play (even Cassidy, bruins coach, said that) while Auston with his frame wasn't willing to engage in the board battle

he is 21 so he can still improve; i am convinced beyond any doubt that Matthews has to play with workhorses who put in the effort or he becomes a perimeter player as well

Hey guys. Not typically a follower of your team, but my best friend is a die hard life long Leafs fan, so I was watching all your games on her behalf, and cheering on the blue and white.

Didn't hurt that you were playing against the Bruins, either, to be honest, but that's neither here nor there.

Certainly not as gutting a loss as 2013, and you did well to take one of the league's elite teams to seven games. The frustration comes from the fact that Boston showed you their throat a bit in the 2nd there, and it just sort of...slipped away.

Anyway, I had a few thoughts, feel free to ignore them or hurl fruit at me or whatever.
  • Matthews had a tough series but it's my understanding he was playing injured, and Boston is (still) an elite defensive team. Bergeron and Chara is a handful for any player to get through, let alone a 20 year old. You would have liked to see him take over at least one game and impose his will, but I'm sure those series will come in the future. He was engaged, at least.
  • I've long been an admirer of Hyman and Brown, and I loved them again in this series. Obviously you don't get far when Hyman and Brown are among your best players, but those guys just oozed battle and heart all series long, and had some clutch moments. Those are guys you win in the playoffs with. Appreciate them!
  • Marner deserves a lot of credit...he took an absolute beating all series long and just kept bouncing up and back into the play. Boston is a hard team to generate offense against and he was your most consistently dangerous forward on the rush.
  • I thought you guys were nuts for signing Marleau but he still has that veteran wiliness. Was money in close around the net.
  • Forgive me for saying it, but what the hell is up with William Nylander. I was a huge booster of this guy. Wanted him badly in that draft. Been jealous of you getting him this entire time. So soft on the frickin' puck. Looked passive, disengaged, scared of contact. Forget Matthews...he was ineffective but he was trying. Nylander was completely AWOL for almost the entire series. And while we're apportioning blame to forwards not carrying their weight, JVR was often nowhere to be found either.
  • On the flip side, Kapanen and Johnsson had excellent series. I don't know where you unearthed Johnsson but he's sneaky fast and plays with pace.
  • Didn't love Babcock's passive box on your penalty kill (at least in games 1-2, didn't notice if he changed it up, I'm sorry). You guys have a lot of burners. Should be aggressive.
  • Your goalie is taking a lot of heat in here. I thought Andersen played *really* well. Maybe the solitary reason the series went seven games. Yes, he got ventilated, but that's what happens when the defense is terrible. And on that note...
  • The defense was terrible. It was Rielly, Dermott, the animated corpse of Hainsey, and then three guys who looked like they were in a heated competition to play each other out of the league. Zaitsev in particular had a shockingly bad playoff. The group improved as the series went on but in games one and two especially, it was a complete clown show back there. The gap control was non-existent, lots of standing and watching, lots of guys losing their check entirely or letting guys slip in behind them. Pastrnak could have set up a shoe shine stand in the time he was given to dipsy doodle in the slot. I've seen Gardiner play a LOT better than this, but the rest of these guys...I dunno. I was pretty stunned when you guys added Plekanec at the deadline and did nothing to address the D, it had always seemed like an Achilles Heel. I thought "Maybe Zaitsev is just way better than I realize". Nope.
Alright that's enough out of me. It's a shame that this bonus window when Matthews/Marner/Nylander et al are on their ELCs is kind of slipping away, but seriously, you guys are going to be annual playoff attendees for probably as long as Matthews wears the sweater at the very least. I know it stings and the Bruins are in your heads a bit, but Bergeron and Chara are going to retire at some point. Marchand is going to age into irrelevance. That particular rivalry is going to wither away. You'll fix your D and be looking at a Conference Final in the next two years, I'd wager.

Peace from the West Coast, Leafers. You'll get em next time.

PS - This isn't sympathy, I know you hate that. I'll get right back to hating you properly when the regular season starts. Lousy, star-studded jerks. <shakes fist>

Tonight was a tough one.

Not pleased with Andersen, he didn’t get a lot of help from tonight’s D, but a it if a team is ever going to go on a deep playoff run you need your goalie to be above average. They need to be able to stop difficult shots, and Andersen had trouble doing that this series (he also let in some strange low quality chance shots as well).

The entire series/tonight’s game isn’t just on him, but he wasn’t great. Especially tonight.

He's as streaky as **** and always has been throughout his career

He let's in way to many softies when he's struggling which is a killer

Of the year? I've watched him his whole career with the Leafs and that's the worst I've ever seen him play. How he goes from looking like a legit top pairing guy to what we saw tonight is baffling. Horrendous and not the only player who needs to be gone ASAP.

Its like if Chara just passed it up the boards to a Leaf, or does a D zone coverage the wrong way for a bit... wed be laughing....

The Bruins rarely have defensive lapses of that magnitude... the worst one was Marchand with Kappy, to be fair was very close, and Kappy is probably one a good night faster than Mcdavid.

Jake had a Bruin Jersey on tonight. No other way to say it. #1 Boston player

You want him to rip up his players? Pi55ed on Gardiner and crap on Andy? Or chew up Matthews and Willy?

I want him to make the f***ing adjustments a coach is supposed to make to get the forward to be able to carry the puck in instead of turning it over in the neutral zone constantly or giving up 3+ goals every game.

Gardiner's always been questionable. He's like a turbo charged elevator. Sometimes he rapidly soars to a height you couldn't think he could pull off. Other times, he crashes into the basement, making mistakes that even peewee league players wouldn't make.

Tell me more about these turbo charged elevators that go higher than the building itself and crash into the basement. First I've heard of anything like that.

Does he think he played well? Dude was an absolute no show tonight.
I think he's content with being pretty good, but he should have been great. He supposed to be a superstar caliber player and he wasn't even close to that. he had a decent series like Connor Brown, which is not good enough. he should be ashamed

Sorry for your heartbreak guys. I really wanted to see a Canadian team win. I cheered you guys on as hard as I could. Hope it turns the corner next year. The last time a Canadian team won a cup I was 4 years old. I think its time we bring one back to Canada for Canada. Hope Winnipeg plays hard and gives us hope! Always next year. You will have lots of time to digest this all and think of ways to turn things around. I really hope Kyle Dubas gets a shot here or elsewhere. He seems like a really good hockey guy. Best of luck in the offseason ladies and gentleman.

As an outsider and not a Leafs fan who watches the Leafs because his wife is a big Leafs fan :naughty: , I am pretty sure Mathews is dealing with shoulder injury. It should be and I think we will find out when they are clearing the lockers. There's no way he could have disappeared in the series without some sort of injury.

I’m not heartbroken...like every other time.

I’m gonna call this season progress and know that we’re still a long way away.

This leaf team gives me optimism that I haven’t had for a while.

All in all. This was a great season with a lot of things to be excited for going forward. It felt good to be proud of my team for the first time in a long time.

Lots to look forward to. I’m saddened we couldn’t pull out game 7, but I’m happy that I had a reason to believe and something to cheer for.

Thanks 17-18 Leafs. I’m proud of my team again.

The team was bad defensively in the 3rd and Andy couldn't make the saves on the 4th and 5th Boston goals when we needed him to.

Because we lost to the same team, the same way with some of the same players not showing up.

It’s absolutely mind boggling how this team still cannot defend leads when it matters most.

There’s a lot to look forward to but it literally feels like we are right back where we were 5 years ago.

4 players from the 2013 team played today, and I am pretty sure only 1 or 2 of them will be playing for the Leafs in next year playoffs.

I'm sick of people making excuses for Babcock or excuses for Lou for not acquiring dmen. You're the GM, you've had multiple years, find a way.

You're assuming any worthwhile D were available at prices that weren't outrageous.

I'm also betting you'd be the first to freak out and lose your s**t if they were to trade someone like Nylander for a legit, #1 stud d-man.

Off topic: There's three times more comments in this post game thread then there is in a full game Golden Knights or Predators thread. Yes, comparing apples & oranges. But pretty amazing.

If Gardiner turns the right direction on that Debrusk goal we’re getting ready for a series with Tampa right now

I look at not trading the UFAs as investments into the future core. Hard to say how things play out if they are dealt but you can only go with what you think is the best at the time.

Coaching I agree 100%, it's been an issue since forever and still they are one of the worst teams in the league at breaking out of their zone under pressure.

most people here thought that we will not make the playoffs if we traded the UFAs; if we had traded the UFAs we

  • still would have made the playoffs
  • youngsters would have gotten playoffs experience (borgman, Leivo, Soshnikov etc...)
  • you would have known who shows up and who doesn't
  • we would have had assets that we could have used to upgrade

Situation Now:
  • We did not trade the UFAs, they walk
  • we got kicked out in the first round; UFAs (vets) didn't pick up the slack and the team relied on youngsters anyway
  • we have no assets to trade to upgrade the UFAs that walk (now we sign a high priced UFA or trade assets that we have for upgrades)
  • THis situation is much worse than what could have been had we traded the UFAs
