Player Discussion Thatcher Demko

Seems to me that Demko has the absolute best demeanor and personality to be an NHL goalie. Teammates report that when he's on the ice, even in practice, he's totally dialed in and in a zombie like state. They describe him as the most focused guy they've ever played with.

His relentless work ethic with goaltending coach Ian Clark is the stuff of legend. And his off-ice habits revolve around getting ready to occupy the crease every night.

And he seems totally able to tune out all the background noise that goes with being an NHL goalie; and can easily shake off the odd bad goal or bad game, and get completely re-focused. The odd blip in his performance is in rear-view mirror a minute after it happens.

Canucks are still a playoff longshot.....but of all the teams vying for the eight playoff spots in the Western Conference, the Canucks have the best goaltending night after night. And that can make any team become 'believers'.

I'd rather get another top 10 pick than getting demolished by the Avs.Flames or Vegas. Some of you guys never seem to understand that the goal is to win the cup and not to just make it. This team is not getting past the 2nd round even if Demko stands on his head and will most likely be eliminated in the 1st round if they somehow make it. The bubble team had better forward depth, a better defence plus Demko and they were all healthy.

Do you see this team surviving a 1st round of physical hockey vs Calgary with Zadorov, Lucic, RealGood and Chucky running around? We have no deterant on the team. Even if we try to smack the midget they have people ready to back him up. It would be worse than the finals vs the bruins. I don't want us to get bullied and humiliated by a divisional rival.

You're probably right that even if the Canucks squeezed into a playoff spot, they'd be 'one and done'.

But then I think back to that 'bubble Demko' and how he had Vegas shaking their heads in frustration in one of the most lopsided seven game series I've ever seen. And then you think that anything becomes possible.

Demko has turned into my favourite player in the NHL.

People always say this despite all the evidence against it. In the playoffs good players are willing to play through hits. Sure you need to hit back but it is not as simple as look the are bigger. Playoffs are also faster. Real good and Zadorov have not been able to handle that in the past. LV has been beaten every year this far often by mediocre teams. Maybe with Eichel this year it will be different but no Nhl team beyond TB and maybe Colorado should be feared in the first round.

What's the old Bieksa quote? "If they want to fight, say no, skate around them and score." Anyways, this is a classic misunderstanding of why we lost vs Boston; and we wouldn't lose to Calgary because they are bigger, we'd lose because they have more skill and play a better game than we do. It's really that simple.

We have the softest team ever. Calgary has skill and can also goon it up if needed. I remember what Ferland did to this team in 2015. Bieksa was talking about John Scott. The 2011 team was an elite team that could steamroll any team in the league when healthy. The 2022 canucks don't have the skill and speed to beat top teams.

just brought a jersey with his name on it. finally found some at the team store. next up maybe fan appreciation night get it signatured.

I bought a cheap blank jersey off adidas for $70 a while back. I was going to put Hoglander but I think I have to put Demko!

Problem in the Flamers series was that the Refs swallowed their whistles and let Ferland charge at will other players. Also, Willie’s 1-2-3-4 didn’t help.

Believe it or not I basically agree with you while pointing out that we did actually win 2 games despite all that. But, yeah, Willie could have been a bit less stubborn...

Quick question, but how many people heard about the Jordan Subban/Demko robbery story before Demko telling it on the Spittin' Chicklets podcast?

Because I sure didn't, and oh boy what a story it is.

Crazy story. Just heard it now.

I know the Hart voters always gravitate towards dominant forwards like Crosby, Matthews, McDavid and Draisaitl.

But you could make a case that no player in the entire league is as important to his team as Demko. If this undermanned and flawed Canucks team manages to claw its way into a playoff spot....then Demko deserves to get more than a few Hart Trophy votes.

Lol, Roy is one of the biggest assholes in NHL history. No surprises there

I'm sure they're happy with their decision to take Conner Bleackley instead.

To be fair, Roy ripped Duchene for his celebration after scoring his 30th goal in a game where his team was down 4-0. Torts is like that too.

I think a lot of these old school guys don't particularly like seeing players try and have some fun on the ice. They see it as unprofessional.

Demko apparently does agree with Roy and says you don't really see goalies dancing in the NHL. Markstrom also danced once and that was at the AHL level.

Personally, I say whatever helps the goalie perform but the reality is there is a different perception when one of the best goalies does it when the team is winning vs a lesser goalie when the team is losing.

Maybe Patrick Roy shouldn't be allowed around organized sports?

Again, to be fair, Brian Burke talks about getting prospects off their script. There are obviously different ways to answer Roy's question. Demko could have made excuses or he could have explained why he dances between the whistle and how it helps him keep a good frame of mind in between whistles. A variety of answers are available. I mean Patrick Roy himself talked to his goal posts.

I think it's all legitimate. What teams gleam from the answers they get will probably depend on the person receiving the information.

People can hate on this podcast/bartsto, but it’s undeniable how they get players to share the best stories lol

He also has a long history of being an raging asshole to very young players and this just adds to that.
