Player Discussion Thatcher Demko

Last two games showed a lot of his warts. Despite how good he was for us, the Boudreau streak had only three really quality teams - Bruins, Jets, Canes. And we were 1-1 against the Kings.

In some ways he is getting addicted to the amazing stops and high shot volumes (lesser now with Boudreau) . This is actually easy to do. Also easy to overlook the small flaws which are eating into his development and IMO consistency. When you make the 10-alarm saves every night it's easy to make excuses for a softie or two. But we see versus these better teams that they score more on relatively little shot volume. That's because they are skilled and fast enough to exploit his weaknesses. As Demko evolves towards a truly elite goalie, these are the humps he will have to get over.

Sad to say again but his tendencies to lean to his posts, to over-use post-integration, and his relative inability to fight through screens are still there and haven't changed.

His skating may have improved marginally, but I don't think he will get too much better than he is now which is above average. Excellent considering his size but IMO not on an objective level.

His inability to keep his feet is exacerbated by his tendency to overslide and the previous post issues I talked about earlier.

He hasn't had as many issues with Carolina that I recall so I'm interested to watch this next game. I'm assuming Halak gets the Caps.

What about the argument that he's coming off a long break and isn't quite in rhythm yet?

The best contract Benning gave out, legitimately now a bargain
There is no doubt about this. Also the fact that he drafted him also counts as a plus.
Even the worst GM in the league can sometimes do the right thing.

There is nothing about Demko that I can criticize. He's been unbelievable this season. This upcoming stretch is a doozy and were bound to lose a few during this killer run, but I'd like to believe if it wasn't for that momentum breaking covid delay, that Demko could potentially steal us a couple of points during this brutal stretch. Demko looks like he's a little bit rusty after this delay, but he's still giving us top quality goaltending. I'm chugging a beer to the first time All- Star.

I think he took a haircut because he actually never played a full season as a starter when he signed it.

Which kind of irks me because he really should have. I don’t get why Dim never trusted him and insisted on a 1B to back Demko up. Even after the contract when he signed Holtby instead of re signing Domingue.

If he started Demko earlier we could have traded Marky before the bubble and get a ransom.

Oh well. If we trade Halak I am fine with Domingue again or someone else league minimum. Vasi and Elliot seems to be working fine for the champs. Why would we need a 1B goalie ? And why would you buy him out and then proceed to sign another expensive back up with sick bonuses? If I am not mistaken, Holtby’s buy out and Halak’s bonuses already eat up what we save from luongo’s cap hit dropping off. Oh Dim. So glad that he is gone.

He’s the Mcdavid of Goalies

I have a sneaking suspicion that he's the best drinker in the world.

Why? How else would you explain him still able to perform like Jesus on pads after every night's shots his teammates have been buying for him?

The 'Bubble Demko' is back....and when he's in a zone like he is right now, he's the best in the NHL--period and end of debate.

But I notice he's seems to seriously overuse the smelling salts before he hits the crease at the start of every game. Maybe he knows what's coming and knows he needs to be completely alert 100 percent of the time? Or maybe it combats the fatigue and dizziness of a 40-50 shot night?

If by some miracle, this Boudreau-coached team somehow manages to climb back into serious playoff contention by the end of the season, then Demko deserves some Hart Trophy votes from somebody.

They're absolutely nowhere without him.
