Terrible world cup ideas

Vladislav Tretiak has leaked out information about the groups in coming World Cup:
1. Canada, USA, Czech Republic and Euro leftovers
2. Russia, Sweden, Finland and NA juniors

http://yle.fi/urheilu/tretjak_paljasti_leijonien_alkulohkon_jaakiekon_world_cupiin/8026106

I'm still so sad that NHL had an opportunity to arrange a good and interesting tournament, but in their greediness they ruined the concept by these meaningless all-star teams. International tournament is about national teams, and this is more like NHL all-stars event with national teams.

How many teams are going to play-off?

Why the hell can't the NHL just make a 3 week break every 4 year like all the othe leauges in the world so that we could see a real Olympic tournament that spans over 2 weeks with a real preparation for the teams.

And please stop with all the ******** about NHl owners deserve to make money.
It works in all other sports in the world, why not in hockey?

For god riddance, even the NBA is allowing their players to go to international tournaments every two years for like 4 weeks, where the NBA owners make no money at all. Some Eur players even have international tournaments every year.

Good riddance and for God's sake become one!

I like the pedigree of the Olympics and the limelight it brings, but honestly, the Olympics hockey didn't have much pedigree before 1998. As long as I get to see best-on-best hockey in a tournament with international teams, I'm happy. Also, when you say every other sport, I'm sure you know that's not 100% true with Soccer. They DO go to the Olympics but not as best-on-best.

This World Cup is riddled with rather silly ideas but let's hope it grows beyond that. I've heard talk of the final rounds being decided in best of 3 games. I'd love to see that.

It had the potential to be a better product than Olympic hockey. Ability to control the location of the tournament and keep it in relevant hockey nations and possibly making the final a best of three being chief among the reasons. Unfortunately they've completely ruined that potential with idiotic gimmick teams.

It also seems like a false argument because they are still 82 games... it's not as if the season gets shortened. It's a tougher schedule for the players and there isn't the all star break but the Olympics is a huge exposure for the NHL.

Exposure in what respect? The evidence is in, the olympics don't provide a boost to the NHL and never have.

FCS the nhl can't even use olympic footage to hook the uber patriotic Olympic fans to lure them back to the NHL. Despite having the overwhelming proportion of talent, the NHL is in the exact same boat as women's biathlon: people pretend to care whole the flame is burning, then they largely forget about it for 4 more years.

I understand that people like the concept of the olympics, but what does the IOC provide for the world's best hockey league ( by a freaking mile) that they can't better provide for themselves?

The IOC could reconcile all of this by cutting the talent in, but they won't because it will cut into their revenue streams they get without having to worry about actually paying the talent that is the predominant draw.

At first I hated the idea but it can't be any less entertaining than the last Olympics.

The entertainment value of these tournaments seems pretty random. Unfortunately, I would derive no entertainment from seeing Euorpean Leftovers, NA Yougn Gunz, USA 24+ or Canada 24+.

The only good that can come out of this, is perhaps an American victory at the NHL gimmicky World Cup will lead to Canada v USA series at some point down the road. If you plan on watching Bettman's sham of a tourney, keep me posted on the results and fallout. And perhaps by the year 2022 we'll see a meaningful, international tourney once again with true National Teams playing.

I'm with you on that one. At this point a CAN - USA series interests me more than another best on best tournament. I'd like to see a best of 7 but to start with I don't understand why they haven't replaced the NHL ASG with a best of 3 CAN - USA series. You wouldn't need to break the league any longer and it would be way better than the ASG.

That's how I first felt, but if I can find it enjoyable to watch NHL clubs from cities I have little or no connection with then I'm willing to give this a shot. Now that we have not only won, but dominated an Olympics on the big ice, in Europe, I kind of feel like Canada doesn't have anything left to prove and a new spin is needed to keep things interesting. Plus I'm more excited to see the NA young guns than I am the likes of Latvia, etc, who do nothing more than collapse around their goalie for 60 min and pray for a shootout.

Because playing a best of 3 serious sereis for nothing but bragging rights increases injury risks for star players of most teams exponentially for close to zero reward. There's little point in such a series for the NHL.

I'm not watching it with those teams involved. Too ridiculous.

I'm also against some sort of Canada/USA series. If Canada wins, big whoop. If Canada loses, everyone freaks out. I would have been interested in it in the late 90s, but not now.

The hockey may be entertaining, and the joke teams will be more talented than the alternative options, but this is still supposed to be an international tournament and to me that clearly implies competition between nations. Switzerland and Slovakia are not going to go into a tournament like this and be favourites, but they are respectable hockey nations. Key word being nations. Ever since the format was announced I've talked about how terrible it is, so I'm not going to do that up until next September and then sit down and be part of the viewing audience.

so what if the Xbox generation and a few random journalists freak out...who gives a ****. We would see 7 games of hi-octane, intense hockey when it's Canada v USA. It would deliver a more entertaining product than another NHL Olympics in S. Korea.

I still think the NHL should continue with its Olympic participation, but I have no hopes that S.Korea will be any different than Sochi... i.e. bore fest.

Yes, I agree that the Sochi Olympics was not as entertaining as the Vancouver edition. I felt the arenas was not filled with real Hockey fans. The past World Championships in Prague is proof that an excellent tournament can be held outside North America (games were played on the big ice). The arenas were filled with passionate hockey fans. The reason why there were more passionate fans creating an entertaining product was because of time. Time to plan for fans and organizers. The NHL is at a fault for fans and organizers limited time to prepare. The NHL gave their permission only months before. If the NHL had committed earlier (like immediately after Crosby's Gold Medal goal). Fans would of been planning trips to Sochi. Organizers could of presented something special for the thousands of NHL fans flocking to sochi. Not just North American NHL fans but European fans also. Instead nobody knew what was going on. This is bad leadership. And i know this sounds like another Bettman bash. However, this is just the truth. The NHL should commit, endorse, and promote. Every NHL team should of been planning packages for the USA and Canada games. With Thousands of NHL fans in Sochi the arenas would of been electric like in Vancouver. Four years of hype and build-up. But all we got was another year of should the players go to the Olympics?

We all know that is a massive understatement. If Canada lost to USA, the complaints would be constant. If Canada wins, it's just the expected result for the fans anyway. I'm also not sure about the level of hockey, particularly if either team gets out to an early lead.

The Olympics is like any other tournament in that whether or not the hockey is entertaining seems to be pretty random. I would put the hockey in Nagano/Vancouver at the top, Salt Lake City in the middle and Sochi/Turin as the most boring. I wouldn't expect great atmosphere in South Korea, but who knows. One of the best things about the World Cup (in potential) is the ability to keep the tournament in places where people actually care about hockey.

Would we? Like I said, what's the incentive there, for the league and the players? I think it's just internet fantasy hockey talk to think sucha series would have any meaning or major media interest(outside Canada).

I couldn't care any less if a series between Canada and the U.S. garnered any interest outside North America. But wait, fans in Europe are eagerly anticipating this NHL gimmicky World Cup in North America?

The NHL could get a Canadian broadcasting company to overpay for it (just like we always do) and the ratings would be good in Canada. The 3 or 4 games in the U.S. (Chicago/New York) would be sellouts and draw average to decent T.V. ratings in U.S. markets.

And the 7 games (I'm assuming it would go 7) would be highly competitive and entertaining hockey.

Why not have 16 teams(4 pools of 4 teams each), each team play every team in their poll once, top 2 move forward.

team 1 in Pool A plays Team 2 in Pool B, Team 2 in Pool A plays Team 1 in Pool B, etc

In my opinion one of the entertainment value killers is having too many teams that can't compete other than playing deadly boring defensive hockey in order to make up for their deficiency in talent. In that respect at least the next W Cup format will eliminate those teams.
