If the Panthers want to add a top 4 D it'll likely cost a 1st+ based on what Pettersson just returned.

I expect it'll be a sellers market at the deadline this year. Not a lot of quality players available as of right now, a weak draft class coming up and the cap jumping should lead to some fairly high prices for decent players.

If Bennett won't sign for less than 7M the Panthers should cut bait like they did with Montour. Let some other team make a dumb mistake signing him to that contract. It's not like they need him desperately with Barkov and Lundell at C.

Your argument is premised on the false assumption that Karlsson will be a worthwhile investment. He won't be.

The Cats will be willing to pay the price for a middle pair guy with a year or two left on his contract. They won't be willing to pay for a middle pair guy who also needs multiple years of $4m+ retention.

I agree that Bennett is likely to walk. If that happens, the we need money and/or assets to acquire a top 6 winger.

Both teams acquired Karlsson and immediately got worse. It's not a coincidence.

I'm not going to speculate what goes on in Dubas' head, I'd probably have to suffer a brain injury to get that level of dumb.

You don't bring in a $10m d-man (who cant actually play defence) to be your #3, especially not if you want to win a cup. I'd also stay away from him even at 50% retained, but i understand others who may say he has some value there. But regardless of one's thoughts on Karlsson, Florida doesn't have expendable assets to make it worthwhile for Pittsburgh to keep $5m in dead money for multiple years so that's irrelevant.


I still wouldn't sign Karlsson to that but it's not a bad idea. I don't know that a team would even need to "give" Pittsburgh anything. Just being rid of Karlsson and his contract with no retention should be enough of an incentive

Pittsburgh also gets a ton of money off the books and only burns a retained salary spot for 1.5 seasons instead of 2.5 seasons if they directly retain on Karlsson.

EK would be a good replacement for Montour. Certainly getting him at 5M x 2.5YRs is infinitely smarter than paying Montour 7.1M for the next 7 years until he's 38 years old.

If you prefer a more defensive D, fine, but I don't think fit is an issue whatsoever.

It is an issue, and I'm not concerned with either guy's offensive abilities, I am worried about Karlsson's defensive abilities. Maybe he'd push the Panthers into the next gear that they haven't found consistently this year, but we're still flirting with first without him and without them playing to their full intensity. Ek is slow, but he's elite at cutting zone entry and still plays a heavy backchecking game while having lesser offensive ability. I don't think Karlsson will do that to do that degree, Forsling is an all around top pair guy, that top pair would be next level with Karlsson, but I don't see it. And I'm not exactly high on Ek.

I'd rather see us find someone younger who doesn't cost as much who has a solid two way game. No idea who that is, but I'm not Zito. I'd take issue with him making a trade for Karlsson.

They won the cup without either of those players on the team. But sure, the Chiarot trade was genius, giving Reilly Smith away so Vegas would take Marchessault in the expansion draft was a masterstroke and every personnel move made in the past decade was the right one because they ended up eventually winning the cup years down the line. Some brilliant thinking there.
