Trying to make the playoffs this year was always a mistake. We need more talent, and we need to shed dead weight.
Evaluation year. We knew it would be inconsistent. But it's weird how we've been inconsistent for weeks at a time.
Armia's in his 7th year here and he's been dog shit for 6 of those years, minus about 25 games this year and 1 playoffs. How anyone wanted to re-sign this guy is beyond me. Guys that have tools but play well once in a blue moon are not guys you build around. f***ing Chad Kilger all over again.

Dvorak is garbage. Gallagher is done. Tank tank tank le'ts go!
Dvorak is gone. Gallagher is not. But it doesn't matter. Team is going to continue to transition.

I have zero issues with us selling this year but sell what? I mean most of the stuff we want to sell isn't going to garner much. Matheson will be a good piece but I can't see us doing that until next year. Dvorak has zero value. Armia has little value.

Do we want to trade Evans? I don't. But if he wants too much we may not have a choice. One thing I think we discovered is that Heineman was a pretty valuable player. He was pacing for 20 goals in his rookie season and since he left, Evans' scoring has dried up and the team stopped winning. He was giving us some really good depth scoring.

We could trade Laine...

Hughes MUST trade for proper vets. I don't see any other choice if they want to start progressing.

Also, not sure what is people's issue with Yoel. Like what do you expect the 4th liner to do... score 50 goals and be PPG? The dude is an outstanding PK'er, chips in with a goal on occasion, cannot be moved off the puck... his puck control in general better than 75% of the team. Same goes for Evans. You know what these guys are... they are useful guys. Keep them. Team needs goal scorers, and high IQ players. And some f***ing toughness up front, FFS!!!!
At the right price and term, I can agree keeping Armia and Evans.
Lol, it's like a strip-tease, I am willing to do it but I wanna keep my socks cuz the floor is freezing cold. We don't have to undress that much, we can keep Evans and Armia. Sorry for the outragious example, my sense of humour is bawdy.

The only thing holding back a total sell-off is the lack of bodies to call up.

If MTL can manage to sell the four pending UFAs and somehow get crappy NHL players back, so to ensure Laval isn’t disrupted too much, then we might see a proper (horrifying) end of season tank.

If they can’t physically replace the players that are meant to be sold, then I don’t see it happening.

Really couldn’t care less about Savard, Evans, Armia, Dvorak, Anderson, Gallagher or even Dach + Newhook. All of them are irrelevant to the competitive Habs team. It’s just unfortunately too much roster turnover if they all go between now and July 1st.

In return Montreal can get capdumps.

If we could land Hagens, Schaefer or Misa in this draft the rebuild would be pretty much over.
I agreed with you. We especially need a elite center with the decline of Dach and Newhook. We are one Nick Suzuki injury from drafting bottom 5 in 2026.

Having Suzuki as our second center will increase our odd of winning the stanley cup.

The losses have been piling up since Heineman and Guhle went down.

But the team was good for a long stretch. I don't think management wants to throw the team's efforts under the bus just yet. But if they continue to falter, Hughes will sell at TDL.

But Evans may be part of the future. This last run shows we're not far from being competitive. In my books we're an ugrade of Matheson and Newhook away. So if Hughes gets offered a 1st for Matheson if we're out of playoff reach at the deadline, I'd take it. Newhook has no trade value. So hopefully he's in the bottom 6 next year:

Caufield Suzuki Slaf
Laine Dach Demidov
Heineman Evans Armia/Beck/Kapanen/Roy
Gallagher Newhook Anderson

The ultimate goal isn't to be simply competitive and make the playoffs.

One of the primary goals of the offseason needs to be not having Dach penciled in at 2C on opening night.
Probably something Hughes will do is get a 2c.

But I'm not throwing in the towel on Dach until after next year. He was better before his injury. It may take him until next year to be back - or he may never be back. Too early for me to give up on the potential we saw.

But would be nice to get a 2c and move Dach to the wing or to the bottom six. Long term, maybe Hage is the 2c...

True but it's a process. We won't be contenders over night.

If i was GM, at this point, I would be looking to trade Evans, Armia, Savard and Matheson in an effort to weaken the team and improve our drafting positions. Next season Demidov will change everything for this team. Evans and Armia could come back in the off-season if the right deals can be made.

I'd wait a couple of more weeks. I think it's too early to give up on the team because of a 5 game skid, after 17 games of being the best team in the league, and the 15 games before those 17 games they were .500.

It doesn't look we'll come out of this slump. But I think Hughes will give the team some games after the break to try to.

You wont get proper prime players for Mailloux ou Roy. In fact avs were not able to get one for Bowen Byram.

Only thing you'll get is over the kill vets who might still be good but wont last for more than 2-3 years and we are not there yet. We need prime players not guys who will soon be cap dump.

The energy of this team changed after that pounding Toronto gave us. Also with the injuries to Heineman and Ghule.. plus there's only 30 games left.. It was a great run, and it felt sustainable. They can use that run as reference and try to replicate it in the future.

Upgrade Newhook in the top 6. Upgrade Newhook on the top pair, and that's a start.

I think Demidov will be ready for the top 6 next year. We'll see about Reinbacher. We'll see what Hughes can do on the trade front and in free agency. We'll have the cap space. But so will most teams, with the cap going up.

Market is not good anyway atm will probably have to wait TDL this year

Too many teams are not sure to make it and usually teams buy only if they are sure to make the playoffs.
