Team toughness

It's funny, JD goes to the Blues and they become a hard-nosed, big, fast team. He leaves and goes to the Blue Jackets. They become a big, hard-nosed fast team. I want JD back...
 
a lot of people doesnt know what a team toughness really means. :(
do you really think that Asham, who plays 5mins a night will change something?
Guys like Girardi and Callahan, those are some tough competitors with their fearless style. Callahan will hit you like a train and G will block any shot without blinking.

Girardi is a great dude but I would prefer someone more physical with McD. If he wants a penny over current salary I hope the rangers pass next summer.

When you say you want him back, do you mean him coming back to the booth with Rosen? :sarcasm:
 
basically Dorsett is here to cause havoc on a nightly basis and after that when they play a team with goons then Asham gets in the lineup too. On the West coast I doubt they are going to have to goon it up.

Moore is pretty gritty, Callahan too.

Then you've got another group of forwards that are pretty skillful, but have no grit in their game whatsoever.

Not too many multi-dimensional players on this team. In fact, it could be argued that Callahan is the only one.

You mean a tough guy d-man who can play 1st pair D on the right side 25 minutes a night? Do you have anyone in mind? Just off the top of my head Weber and Chara aren't available. If they were they would cost us plenty.

I would be a lot happier if the Rangers were a tougher team but not everyone can play first line or first pairing defense. You have to have the skill and the smarts for that.

What? He is worth more than 3.9......you are severely underrating Girardi.

He's more than a "great dude."

Glen needs to make a few trades, he has proven he can do it quite well. Granted we have bigger probs then girardi but we can't pay everyone and we have good depth at d. If paying girardi makes signing staal long term an uncertainty then I kick some tires now while there is value. We aren't contending with this roster this yr, only chance is if the kids make noise.

It's not an issue of one pylon, it's multiple jags lacking skill and grit. Torts had to go but he milked every drop last yr.

there's no way I would trade for a big d-man with McIlrath as close as he is. I'd maybe be interested in signing Matt Greene if he makes it to FA, but that's it. I would rather have Staal than Girardi 10/10. I agree this team could be grittier but they're built pretty well for the time being, lets see how this season pans out before "we need this guy in a trade, glen's gotta trade for this guy, etc."

When McIlrath eventually makes it he'll be a bottom pairing d-man until he shows he's ready to be a top 4. I don't see the ability there to be a top pairing d-man on a good defense. I suppose if the Rangers had Erik Karlsson then McIlrath would be great running shotgun for him like Beukeboom did with Leetch. Leetch was so good he became a target. Beukeboom made him much less of a target. I don't think we have to worry about McDonagh becoming a target. He's a great young player but not a superstar so there's no point in forcing square pegs into round holes. Girardi got to the position he is despite average skating through hard work and dedication--sound positioning--an ability to play physical without taking penalties--to play 25 + minutes night after night against the leagues best players and keep them relatively quiet on the majority of those nights.

On the issue of trades--I'm not for trade happy general managers. I don't particularly care a whole lot for Sather but generally--not all the time he does well in trades--but it's very unlikely any GM is going to trade their way to a better team all in one go without tearing apart the fabric that makes that team what it is and without trading away the future at the same time. Changes made gradually do not do that nearly as much.

I said this exact thing over the summer. Too many 1-dimensional players. Callahan, Dorsett, Stepan. Those are the multi-dimensional players on this team. Maybe Boyle, Moore and Miller. Fast looks like he can be a good 2-way player ala Hagelin which are very useful. Pyatt, Richards, Nash, Brassard, Pouliot are 1 dimensional.

The problem is, if we wait for the season to pan out the return decreases. I'd rather the team be proactive then reactive. If they've identified an area tat needs shoring up, then maybe, it might be best to kill a few birds with one stone. Free some future cap, address a need, maximize return while we can on a player we will most likely have to overpay. We can't keep mcd,gir, and staal at salaries They will require IMO. We have staal & mcd who need to be rangers for life.

I don't see girardi as a big part of our future. He is a good player but if he walks for nothing that will suck. I see him as a means to an end. I guess we will find out eventually one way or another.

My bottom line is, you have to give to get. We need to get while the getting is good lol.

Girardi is the type of player teams win with. Hard to play against, plays big minutes, blocks shots, leads by example. If the Rangers let him walk, it will be a bad idea.

Not exactly, IMO.

It was definitely a welcome that we were on the other end of that punch vs them for a change, but Orr knocking out Fedoruk(who was already punchy at the time) does not seem like Schultz, Bridgman, Brown getting knocked out. I thought Goerge McPhee bloodying Tocchet in '86 was a big relief after years of beatings.
