Let's not forget that at the last World Cup all the referees' decisions were in your favor, and it's not just about the final. Is it because there have been personnel changes in the IIHF. In addition to the president, the General Secretary was replaced, this post was taken by Matti Nurminen (executive director of the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation), in addition, many believe that Kalervo Kummola has a huge influence on Tardif. Wasn't it with his submission that the championship was moved from Russia to Finland? Where did you suddenly get such support from the IIHF? You hold home world championships, the refereeing authorities get a lot of places at tournaments, and refereeing mistakes are always in your favor. is it just a coincidence?

I hate to jump on you guys' discussion like this, but I don't know if you MatBarzal are Canadian or Russian. If Canadian, didn't Canada get 3x U20 hosting rights back to back or something at the same time when Finland got 2x WHC back to back. Canada sort of got it better, however here in Finland the casual people think that WHC > U20, but maybe the Finns with more knowledge might say U20 > WHC. Personally I'd say I value them about evenly because Finland's player production got a bit worse again compared to few years back, so U20 is not as exciting as it was some time ago to me. My point is that Finland didn't get favored anymore than Canada did with this. It will take like 10 years before Finland will host another WHC tournament.

I would have completely left out Anttila and Björninen.
Why Björninen? I can understand Anttila, but Björninen? He's what 27? 28? In his prime and one of the best if not the best shut-down line center in Europe. And can keep up with pace of NHL players, excelent in the faceoff circle.

What desicions? One penalty in the overtime? And none of the referees from the gold medal games worked in Liiga this year.

The tournament was moved to Finland AND Latvia because Russia started a full scale war. Switzerland was offered to host because covid cancelled their tournament but weren't interested. If Finland and Latvia was ready to host again and no one else wasn't, then they are going to host the tournament since they wanted to.

Which referee mistakes are you referring to?

Lines in practice:

Lehtonen - Ohtamaa
Määttä - Koivisto
Seppälä - Pokka
Friman - Matinpalo

Rantanen - Manninen - Hartikainen
Kakko - Suomela - Armia
Sallinen - Lammikko - Kapanen
Oksanen - Björninen - Anttila

Pesonen and Merelä as extras. Gotta say, Pesonen seemingly outside the regular lineup is a bit unexpected.

PP1:
Sallinen, Hartikainen, Manninen, Rantanen, Lehtonen

PP2:
Armia, Kakko, Suomela, Kapanen, Määttä
those are quite nice lines. classic Jalonen. very balanced. I agree, it's weird that Pesonen is outside the regular lineup

I didn’t read all posts here. But I notice by some a slight moaning about the lineups of the Finnish NT. I trust J. Jalonen I think he knows what he does. Some are also the opinion Anttila "Mörkö" shouldn't be in the team.

But I remember well when Finland won the title with an absolute "no name" team without any NHL players. Most Finns predicted may be the 9th or 10th place in any case they wouldn't even reach the quarterfinal. Concerning Anttila the voices against him shut up latest when he scores the game winning goal in a medal game.

Don't misunderstand me. Of course it's good to have world class player from the NHL like Rantanen in the team, the chances are so higher to win may be the tournament, though I don't think that Finland will win the title twice in a row. But I can be wrong of course you never know.

I couldn't watch the Czech tournament from the results they weren't successful I know. But if I'm not wrong they played without NHL players and the WHC is a complete other tournament. So the results there aren't really meaningful I suppose.

I hope Oksanen is just a fill-in because he fits the style. I don't want his or Merelä's passports stamped.

Especially if Pesonen is not in the lineup. Sallinen I guess I have to live with.

Especially for you, I have edited a video that proves that the refereeing was in favor of the Finnish national team. And this is not all the moments! I don't have that much time to look for the rest. Enjoy your viewing.

Let's play a prediction game: Top 3 Point Predictions for the tournament for Finnish players?
Feel free to add any reasoning also if needed.

Example:

1. Rantanen 8+6 = 14 pts
2. Kakko 6+6 = 12 pts
3. Lehtonen 1+9 = 10 pts

He means may be the mistake in the final game against Canada last year when the referee sent the Canadian to the penalty box because of high stick and Finland could play PP 5 on 3. They scored also at least once or could may be even tie the game.
But in the replay you could see that it was the stick of a Finnish player in the face of his teammate. The referee just didn't see it.
It was a very lucky penalty for the Finns. But in the past the Finns were also often much more obvious disadvantaged by the referees like 2014 at the Olympics against Russia in Sotchi for example. The whistling of the referees was a real scandal. So if they have once luck with the decisions of the referees it can happen.
I'm still the opinion the Finns deserved the title though the referee made here a mistake.

Kakko will score more than Rantanen who will take a bigger responsibility as a leader and defensively. Lehtonen will score 8-10 points. Armia will score a bunch too.

8 moments in 5 different games. 3 against Canada, except the last the last one. Canadian player was clearly hooking Björninen, clear hooking call against Canada. 2 against USA, 1 against Latvia, 1 against Czechia and 1 against Slovakia. And in reality 2 clear referee errors against Canada, that last one was a clear penalty for Canada.

And you are seriously comparing your video to this, were everything happened in 1 game

1. Malkin hit to the head, no penalty. Normally a 5 min major and game misconduct. (0:24)
2. Immonen touches Denisov and 100 kg guy a does a dying swann, 2 min "crosscheck" (2:12)
3. Shirokov slips, 2min for "hooking" to Kontiola
4. Malkin scores a goal 1 second after Immonen gets out from the penalty box, so it's a goal on
5 on 4 situation. Referee says that the goal happened on 5 on 3 situation, Kontiola has remain in the box. Russia's powerplay continues.
6. Another hit to the head at 5:09, no penalty
7. Again Russian slips on ice at 6:52 and "hooking" penalty for Finland
8. At 8:04 a russian player hooks a finnish player in a front of referee, no penalty.
9. Literally 1 minute later 106 kg Ovechkin falls from small contact and "tripping" penalty for Finland (8:31)

9 referee mistakes in 1 game, all favouring Russia. Not a coincidence. I could believe 2 or 3 mistakes, not 9.

10. Znarok was suspended from the gold medal game, but he was in contact with the assistant coach with a radio phone. Against the IIHF rules and clearly favouring the Russians, Vitoljins or whatever is not half as good coach as Znarok is. And no penalty for Russia afterwards. Znarok was also forbidden to go to ice after the game but there he was, irrelevant but i was against the rules

And talk about influence in the IIHF, BFFs Putin and Fasel celebrating just after Russia "won" the world championship in 2014.

In your previous post you were talking much influence Kummola has over Tardif, well that must be true since he about apply finnish citizenship. Oh wait...... silly me, my memory ain't what it used to be. It was Rene Fasel who was applying for Russian citizenship.
The former head of the IIHF, the Swiss René Fazel, received Russian citizenship - News in France
Russian citizen - René Fasel's name to be removed from BCF Arena?

How fitting......

Find yourself someone who looks at you the way Putin looks at Fasel and vice versa. Love is in the air.

I agree. Nothing is guaranteed. And if we don't win gold it's nothing to be ashamed of. Have been to the finals already 3 years in a row with 2 golds like every knows. Anyhow, we are not going to win gold every year but I still think we have a very good chance to win back to back for the first time.
What are you talking about? Of course it is guaranteed. We have Jalonen and Anttila. Do you even watch hockey?

Larmi is our starter vs USA. Jalonen confirmed it. I like it, although originally I wanted Larmi to play vs Sweden and Olkinuora get the start vs USA, but it looks like the starter position is Larmi's to lose unless he doesn't play well. If we win vs USA and Larmi plays well, it will most likely be Olkinuora vs GER and Larmi vs SWE. Well Olkinuora plays vs Germany regardless.

Tonight will be interesting. Hopefully Seattle starts playing well again against Dallas again. It's at 2-2 now.

I'm sure Nokia believed they would continue to dominate the mobile phone industry too in 2007. Finns and arrogance don't age well. But I'm fairly confident that Antilla and Jalonen pull off their magic once again.

Lehtonen - Ohtamaa

Switch Rantanen and Hartikainen and you've got them correctly. Hartikainen LW, Rantanen RW.

What about Tolvanen?
I'm pretty sure that Seattle does not advance and Tolvanen does have a contract for next season, if I'm not mistaken.

Dallas - Florida/Carolina winner will be the Stanley Cup Final pairing this year ;)

Regarding that Winland goal song: annoys everyone, especially the opposing team - keep it until/if Winland sometimes in the future should miss a IIHF men's medal.

Top 3 Winland points prediction:
Rantanen
Manninen
Tolvanen (or Lehtonen)

All players have been registered except Pesonen and Merelä. So max 2 players could come from NHL but I doubt we will get any, especially if Dallas, Florida and Carolina all advance.

I hope for Larmi he starts well in the tournament. It's his first WHC and if the performance in the first game of the tournament is good he boosts his self-confidence for the further games.
It's important for Finland to have a solid and strong goalie. If the goalie is good, then the whole team plays better.
But ok that counts for every team.

Is it btw also the first WHC for Niklas Friman? I've never heard of him. In case he already played in the Finnish NT at the WHC I don't remember.

He was a part of the gold-winning squad last spring. He was also with the team that won the olympics. I won't say you have a bad memory, though - as unlike forwards, when a stay-at-home d-man does nothing memorable, it's usually a sign of him being good at his job.

This is the first major tournament for Larmi, Heljanko, Matinpalo, Oksanen and Merelä.
