Team Finland WC 2023

As illone84 said, contract. Mikkola from Rangers is another Finnish player, but we don't even talk about him because he also has contract negotions upcoming.

Funny thing is, Devils fans have been complaining about Haula and McLeod all season because they didn't have enough points (as if they had them in fantasy hockey).

Both players scored last night and are a big reason the Devils are moving on to the next round.

@Torspo21 mentioned in a different thread Waltteri Merela receiving NHL interest after Tappara's championship and that he hoped to see him with Finland men's team at the WC.

Has Merela progressed that far? Hadn't heard or read about that possibility anywhere else.

Mikke confirmed out.
All good. Hope he rests and has a bounce back season. Best of luck, Mikke 64!

Mikke confirmed out.
And no new players from European leagues

Merelä IMO was never an option for the world champs. Not good enough of a scorer to nudge out anyone there and not enough of a defensive specialist to earn a spot ahead of known commodities. Really odd to see his name in this thread as I never saw him have a chance.

It sounds like it wasn't easy decision for Granny to skip the tournament because Lehtinen had to contact him couple of times. So it feels like Granny was considering it. It's finally good to get closure on that situation.

It's nice to hear that Lehtinen & Jalonen are keeping a close eye on NHL second round exit players as well.

Well here Lehtinen said it. NHL is 2 weeks ahead of schedule compared to WHC so that makes the round 2 exit players same as round 1 exit players last year for our team, which gave us 3 really good players.

"Viime vuonna NHL loppui kaksi viikkoa myöhemmin kuin normaalisti ja oli saatavilla tuon tason pelaajia niin kuin Mikke, Heiskanen ja Lindell."

Great interview overall. A lot of information and clarity on things.

I think the team is set.

Olkinuora
Larmi
Heljanko

Lehtonen - Seppälä
Määttä - Kemiläinen
Lindbohm - Friman
Ohtamaa(A) - Pokka

Rantanen and Lehkonen ain't coming, Kakko might come and i don't anyone see coming from the 2nd round. The last two spots goes to Laine and Kakko or Kakko & Ruohomaa, if Kakko declines and Laine is still injured then the last two spots goes to Ruohomaa and Oksanen. But if Laine is healthy and Kakko declines, the last spot goes to Ruohomaa.

Granlund - Manninen(A) - Hartikainen
Pesonen - Suomela - Kapanen
Rajala - Lammikko - Armia
Sallinen - Björninen - Anttila(C)

I think 13th and 14th forwards will be Pakarinen and Oksanen.

Why Friman over Koivisto?

Without additions and with Laine showing up as initially planned:

Ma.Granlund - Manninen - Hartikainen
Laine - Suomela - Armia
Pesonen - Lammikko - Kapanen
Oksanen - Björninen - Anttila
13. Sallinen

Manninen is an interesting case this year and I'd say a big mystery. He might look worse than we are used to with this strange season he has had and if that is the case, it will be interesting to see can he regain his form after he gets some games with team Finland. If he's a lot worse than expected now, that line won't work and that will be a problem going forward. It will be interesting to see Manninen in this EHT tournament. I think that we'll see quickly where Manninen's form is at.

I'd say that it's safer bet to say that Suomela is our #1 center at the moment. Hopefully we'll get at least one more good winger for Suomela's line from the NHL.

Suomela + Kapanen in the same line has been good so far though, but that line did have MaG as a 3rd piece. Personally I wouldn't do the full UFA thing yet. I assume that Jalonen will continue to experiment MaG + Suomela + Kappy line when this EHT tournament starts and if that line continues to be good, he won't break it, unless Rantanen joins. We've also seen Manninen + Hartikainen in the past perform very well without MaG.

I would keep Armia (7+7 in 43 NHL games) out of top-6 if possible. Big part of Armia's offensive production came at the end of the season (the hat trick). He goes on these huge cold streaks and that's been the case for 2 seasons in the NHL now (28 points in 101 games). In the NT we probably just got lucky with him last season that he was surprisingly productive. Might as well put Pesonen into top-6 instead of Armia. I love Armia as a bottom-6 player though.

I agree. But Jalonen has always liked to use lines that are used to playing together so I still wouldn't be surprised if we went with the UFA line right away (the same way as he'll keep Anttila ja Björninen together).

If we get really lucky (without second round additions):

Lehkonen-Rantanen-Laine
Ma.Granlund-Manninen-Hartikainen
Armia-Suomela-Kapanen
Lammikko-Björninen-Anttila
Pesonen

I remember some cases where Jalonen has working lines but he doesn't use them right away. Instead he keeps them in his back pocket and tries to find other working lines. That creates multiple options for him for later in the tournament so he doesn't have to panic at the worst possible moment if some important player gets injured or if the lines stop working well. I'll say that we get to see the full UFA line in one game in the EHT Czechia tournament and also the MaG + Suomela + Kappy line once.

Looks good, except switch Suomela with a more defensive forward, but who can score; like Jere Sallinen.
Sallinen was good at last 2 WC, good two way forward, who can play all 3 forward positions.

Also, i have not liked Markus Granlund's game of late with team Finland, so i would put Harri Pesonen in to replace Granlund.

how did markus granlund and lindhbom never turn into good NHLers? both are very good and have physical strenght
Lindbohm should have made it last season, played well enough. But a bit of a logjam on the Panthers.

Markus needs a bit extra space to get into his groove and really isn't half the player on the small ice.

Hartikainen is another one, who i think should have had a good career in NHL but never had.

Wrong skating style, would need to move his feet more. Pakarinen however.. I cannot understand how he doesn't score more in Europe and why he isn't a fourth liner in the NHL. Looks brilliant on the national team. Always looks pretty darn skilled and strong. Can play some D too.
