Do you think he'll end up in the Honka, JP and Juolevi pile? They all have elite skillsets too. Or does he rise above and become a solid Top 6 NHL winger?
To be honest? Totally impossible for me to predict. He's one of those few, it doesn't matter if you are some NHL-scout or not, there is no one in here who can claim that he's a sure bet anymore, like no one.
I believe "Jukurit" summed it really well earlier.
First time I saw him, perhaps three years ago or so. I was sold. Flying out there and also having eye catching stickhandling and so on.
But the more I've watched him, the more my first impressions are fading away big time.
He's his own worst enemy, like if he can't create something spectacular in every situation? Then he seems to hog the puck even more and just ends up taking a worse option than the simple one. It's really frustrating to witness. It's like he seems to try to be larger than life in every moment and no one will ever manage that.
If that is because of his enormous struggle these last years affecting his confidence to not being able to have any flow to his game combined with being immature, or if it is the way he reads the game that is just below average is difficult to say because of his young age. No matter what, it's sure time to successively overcome and start being a factor, especially at junior level.
Right now a lot of Finnish fans would consider him clueless out there and I can't blame them. He needs a good tournament but that will not decide how he will manage in the longterm.
For now? He could be placed in that pile for sure.

Last time I saw him was a preseason game against the Oilers... it was so funny because he stood out and looked like he was going straight to the NHL.. then he got to OT. .they put him out there and he tried to do too much and got run by JP, lost the puck and game over. Exactly what you are describing. I haven't seen him enough to make a judgement. Hope he does well. Also, if you are ever bored.. go to the prospect board and read those interactions!lol

Lampinen was good against Canada. The defense is horrible and Heimosalmi was our worst D, imagine.

So all in all? Huuhtanen, Nyman and Lampinen were good.

Not a single D was good.
Neither was Kemell nor Lambert nor Koivunen, even if his goal was quite cheeky.
Kapanen getting handled (bit harsh perhaps) when facing Bedard and their best guys.

Kiviharju cut from the roster. So dumb. Confident he'd be in top 4 and PP based on performances if he just had a fake passport saying he is 19y/o to show for the coaches

Is Finland's U20 team management staff full bunch of idiots who don't know the rules?
The limit was 23 players so why in the hell Finland has selected 25 players?

Oh well maybe this is the result what you will going to get
when you hire total nobody coach who hasn't win nothing in his coaching career
to coaching your country's U20 hockey team. Saatanan tunarit.

I must say it really has, they really go at it and it makes for top flight hockey most of the time.

That match up is just getting hotter and hotter all the time and is swiftly becoming the marquee game to watch in most tournaments.
Only what gets hot in these U20 WJC's is Finland's goal lamp
when Bedard, Wright, Stankoven etc will teach goal scoring for Finland in quarterfinal or semifinal

This is such a familiar narrative from so many years (mostly pre-tournament, obviously) - North Americans are amazing gods and our hopeless guys should basically forfeit the tournament. And then it so often turns out that we manage rather well against them, very tight, bitterly fought games even if we should occasionally lose. I'm really getting tired of this story line: it will not be a great surprise if find ourselves in the final, yet again. And not a huge one if we gain another gold. Sure, we might lose the semifinal, that will always be a possibility, but we have become a permanent contender in these tournaments.

Wow take it easy there. Sure i would've also liked to see Kiviharju there. But let's be real he was gonna be #7 anyway. So is it really the end of the world you make it out to be? Yeah sucks for the kid and i agree he would've been better than Ruotsalainen for that role. Next year will be his time to shine in this tournament and he should be top pair then.

Just maybe let the tournament, or atleast the group stage play out before throwing the coach under the bus.

That poster is famous for his end of the world rants. I doubt many share his view.

Did you even see the game against Canada? He wasn't able to handle the intensity nor some forwards physique and strength and that's understandable considering his age combined with his size.
If he weren't ready then let him grow one more year, won't harm him. Actually, could've got injured against a Canadian team if the game got intense. I got that impression.

Is this a joke? How is Ruotsalainen better??

Perhaps he's not? But Kiviharju didn't show me that he would be ready for big minutes nor 5v5 against NA teams in a smaller rink.
Could be just as good to keep him healthy and let his development continue on home soil.
Did you see the game against Canada? I agreed with "Erikfromfin", there seemed to be a big risk for him either getting harassed-injured or ridiculed by the intensity of the Canadian forwards. What's the point in that?

We think Lampinen starting?
Who knows, but he looked much better against Canada than Koskenvuo against the US,

I agree with a lot of this. I bet he didn't see the games. I'm glad that Kiviharju got a pass this year. Let's be honest here, players like Bedard and Roy would've manhandled him in a playoff game, heck they almost did that in an exhibition.

If there are some question marks it would rather be the forward selection and leaving Matikka and a couple of others out.
I do believe we would've benefitted from his skill and size because against Canada it was obvious that Huuhtanen and Nyman were able to create a whole lot more than Kemell, Koivunen and Lambert.

Of course he struggled when he didnt get to play in 2 first pre-tournament games and was thrown straight in vs Canada playing on a different ice size. They gave him absolutely no opportunity to adapt

His performances in u18, TPS u20 and TPS should have been easily enough to give him the 7th Dman spot at the very least
