If there is any team that is built to play a game or two with a couple players short it is a JJ Team. With how the ice time is dealt out it would be no problem. Except against a team like the US who are the best at forcing opponents to play long shifts.

There's only 3 Finnish players i'd take before Granlund to WHC (Barkov, Aho and Heiskanen). He's like small Koivu, leader and he will give 100% in all situations and is tailored for Jalonen hockey. Year ago i would've said no to Tolvanen, but he proved that he's NHL level player even without his shot, so i'd happily take him. And this is a short tournament, he has that lethal shot and while it's inconsistent, it can win you games if he get's going.

While i hope that CAR, FLA and DAL would get far in the playoffs, it looks like atleast one of those teams will lose. Guys like Barkov, Aho, Hintz or Heiskanen are worth of waiting.

I think I've said before that even if we just get Granlund, that would bring so much more offence to this team and I think we need it. Tolvanen would be welcome as well, his shot on powerplay would be great to have.

Right now, the good news is that with Nashville getting swept, there's time for Granlund (and Tolvanen) to make it to the tournament opener, and thus among the first 12 forwards registered. After that, there's really no deadline to fill the remaining open spots - doesn't matter whether the rest of the series end in five, six or seven, really.

Just have to knock on wood regarding any injuries... as those could also eat spots.

I'd like to get Kakko but after all the injuries he has had this year, I doubt he'd come even if Rangers lose in 5.

For him the reps would be very usefull.

But then again elc runs out this summer

Henri Jokiharju in covid. Will miss at least opener against Norway.

This is my idea against Norway assuming that Granlund & Tolvanen are coming and they make it to the Norway game:

Pesonen-Manninen-Hartikainen
Tolvanen-Granlund-Armia
Lammikko-Filppula-Armia
Mäenalanen-Björninen-Anttila

11 forwards registered.

Assuming that Mäenalanen is healthy.

We're going with 11 forwards to save a slot for some better player from the NHL. Armia will play in 2 lines and if he gets tired, we'll use some other winger playing in 2 different lines. No big deal against Norway and possibly Latvia.

Now this Jokiharju getting sick thing is really bad if we want to do some kind of "save slots for NHL stars" plan.

Defenders - 6+Jokiharju registered = 7:

Lehtonen-Hietanen
Vatanen-Friman
Ohtamaa-Pokka

7D+11F=18 ------- 22-18 = 4 player slots remaining. Kakko's plane is coming so it's really 19.

We're hoping for no injuries and no more illnesses than Jokiharju to execute this plan well. Aim is to have 7 defenders and 12 forwards ready and registered against USA on Monday. 19 registered players with Kakko.

Monday=FIN vs USA. Rangers eliminated 1-4 on Thursday morning Finnish time. Kakko will play against USA on Monday.

Lines against USA - on Monday:

Pesonen-Manninen-Hartikainen
Tolvanen-Granlund-Kakko
Lammikko-Filppula-Armia
Mäenalanen-Björninen-Anttila

Lehtonen-Hietanen
Vatanen-Friman
Ohtamaa-Pokka
Jokiharju (if he still has Covid we go with 6 defenders)

Still 19 players registered but at this point we would be close to the final line up because some superstars' planes would've just arrived and they would be ready for the game after USA. It's a break day after USA and then after that break day is Sweden game on Wednesday.

Friday morning Finnish time is the date when many series could end 4-2 freeing up some of these players. So they would have plenty of time to arrive for the Wednesday's Sweden game:
-Määttä, Mikkola, Puljujärvi, Haula, Aho, TT (and Kotkaniemi only if one of Aho or TT can't come)

Saturday morning Finnish time is the date when these teams could be eliminated by 4-2. Florida Panthers & Dallas. Again a lot of time to arrive for the Wednesday's Sweden game. These players could be free then:
-Barkov, Lundell, Luostarinen, Lindbohm, Heiskanen, Lindell, Hakanpää, Hintz, Kiviranta

So 3 slots could be available for some of those players and these players would have plenty of time to get ready for the game of death and before the game of death even get some games under their belt.

MAY 18 WED - FIN-SWE
MAY 20 FRI - FIN-GBR
MAY 21 SAT - FIN-AUT
MAY 24 TUE - FIN-CZE
MAY 26 THU - First WHC playoff game.

The other option is that Jalonen doesn't get Kakko or gets both Kakko & Aaltonen. He just runs 12 forwards from the get go against Norway and Miro Aaltonen will be registered. Then we would still have 2-3 slots later for more players depending on if Kakko is also registered along with Aaltonen.

The only players that would from potential play off drop outs be really weather makers are Barkov and Hintz. Maybe also Heiskanen (Lindell?). But Jalonen will not leave 2 slots open (only in case on Jokiharju's place). He is usually fair to the guys in the team and he will not risk the chemistry of the team for slightly better options. And with that I have in mind that NHLers behind the names mentioned are maybe individually each better on a good day, but after a long season and travelling and a quick and short tournament - it is not worth to mess with the team. And he has the guys with whom he has won Olympic gold, 2019 Worlds and last year's silver. Situation would have been different with longer time to get into the team, etc. It will be interesting to follow the situation with Granlund (and Tolvanen). But I doubt anyone will be brought from Swedish Finals. Too short time to get into the team. 95% sure everything is at place already and really only 2 huge names who could make the difference are Barkov and Hintz.

What on earth makes you think Kakko is likely to join?

Young guy. Jalonen's familiar. I don't think that the contract situation is a problem. Wouldn't be the end of the world if he didn't come though. Then Jalonen would just stamp Aaltonen and we would still be looking for some bigger star players. Also wouldn't need to run 11 forwards and could build some 4 forward lines chemistry easier.

I agree with the Swedish finals part because it went to game 7. Game 6 we could've had Lepistö for the Norway game. I don't like getting Swedish finalists anymore because of Jokiharju's covid case and if we aren't running 8 defenders. Need to save some slots.

TT+Aho not weather makers in your opinion? Our PP will be good in a matter of days after they arrive and as we know they can be used in any situation of the game.

I just don't see it happening because of injuries and contract. Just doesn't seem smart from him.

Coupled with his injury history this season it might well be. Another strike against that could really ruin the raise he's looking at. And it's not a small one, since it's his ELC that's running out.

As I said in that post. This plan requires some luck. There is no need to register any extra players unless injuries or more illnesses (Jokiharju) will happen. So until that happens, it's looking good.

We're gonna have to see what happens. I think that he's the type of guy that could come regardless of those obstacles. It's up to Kakko in the end.

And while anything's of course possible, smart money still paints him in the "unlikely" column rather than penciling him in.

Going the optimistic way as long as I can but trying not to be over optimistic. I'll say 50% chance that he comes if that series ends 4-1 in favor of PIT.

One hour ago Jere Lehtinen made some comments on video about the Nashville guys. He didn't reveal much. 1-2 days and we might know more. It would be hard to make it to the Norway game if they won't know tomorrow.

Considering what most players do in a similar situation, even 50% is a bit over optimistic here.

Aho. Any team would love to have him. But in Tampere tournament he is in the picking order behind Barkov and Hintz. In case of either of them not being available Aho would be warmly be welcomed. Teräväinen has been a bit further in Jalonen book, but when Dallas and Florida will continue and Carolina drop that pair could step in for B & H.

I hope they do wait until game 6.. game 7 is very tricky.

Carolina series could be over Friday morniny Finnish time. Its a huge possibility someone is available.
