Winning the first 3 games would be a dream.

It's good to have the hardest games early before Canada and USA has had too many games for warm up. I wonder how many practice matches both of those teams have scheduled before the tournament begins? It wouldn't surprise me if it's like one for each. There's a clear advantage for Finland there. It could be some decent betting money to bet for Finland if Finland has good odds against them.

Canada will play its one and only pre-tournament game tomorrow against Austria.

same for the U.S. v Germany, I believe.

The defense is actually one of the best in a while. Offense lacks offensive skills outside of Kakko and Rajala.

This isn't completely true, IMO. The defense is good, the strongest suit of this team, but it's really no better or worse than what we've had in the past five years or so. Despite having little in the way of bona fide NHL talent - which is, thankfully, a gradually improving situation - we've been enjoying some impressive Europe-based quality for a while now.

In deed the crappiest team ever on paper. It usually means they go far though.

It will be interesting to see how our liiga boys do against good players. I'm glad we have Tyrväinen to keep the legacy of Ruutu and Komarov going. Other interesting players, Hakanpää, Kakko.

Well, if the team strikes out early, Jalonen will have an excuse. Not sure how we got here after the Marjamäki fiasco. We have plenty of good coaches but somehow we keep recycling these dinosaurs.

Ten players from Liiga in the roster is a lot. Goaltending is a question mark, defense looks decent. Offense at this moment doesn't have any clear go-to guys, so its like Finland has to rely on consistent secondary scoring.

The team is deemed not to succeed which usually means they do well. I'm old enough to remember spring '92 when expectations were lower than ever. That non- name Finland team made the final and won Canada and hosts Czechs on the way.

Has Tolvanen declined? The offense needs more firepower and creativity. Tolvanen isn't perfect but he has those qualities to some degree. I have no idea, who is supposed to be relied on to score goals.

Actually, not many has officially declined yet, outside Saros, none of the Predators Finns have declined.
Columbus just got ousted out; Nutivaara,Hännikäinen became available

MiGranlund,Rinne,Salomäki,Tolvanen,Nutivaara,Hännikäinen are all available.

I´m not convinced Tolvanen is in great shape and has the confidence, neither am i saying that Heponiemi is 100% ready for the mens WC because it´s obvious he lacks size. But i really would want to add something to this team. I get the underdog, working hard unit etc. But we need some skill to have a good PP as well. Heponiemi is really calm and cool with the puck, reminds me a bit of Datsyuk. Tolvanen on the other hand, is not a safe card by any means, but he has the eager to shoot and shine. He has the potential to be a difference maker.
Leskinen, Palve(Pittsburgh, i know), Turunen and other Liiga players are missing. I just can´t accept the fact that we even can´t choose the best players from the domestic league.
I do think Jalonen is a legend but something gives me the feeling that he is just trying to prove how great he is? Like securing potential criticism if everything goes to hell with arguments like "Hey, we couldn`t expect anything special from Finland this year".
Perhaps youngsters like Heponiemi and others really need an a off season to build up strength and that the management respects that and hopes it helps these guys to become future NHL´ers? Because if there will be another World Cup or O.G. that would help Finland in the long run.

With that said, i´m still excited over goalies like Lankinen and Vehviläinen. They have potential and this can really go either way. This WC is they´re biggest competition ever, so while it´s exciting and all, this will really show how they can manage in the bigger stages. Jokiharju, as i mentioned will be a joy to watch but i´m eager to see how Kaski can handle this competition. Then we have Kakko and... Not so much. I mean come on, you guys that are so convinced we will go strong in this tournament. Why the hell can´t we have a bit more exciting players? Like 1-2 or three players with Kakko that can build something special. Because now this offensive roster is so meeeh that we barely stand a chance to get the gold medal.
I really do get the feeling Jalonen is trying to play god somehow and just show hos great of a coach he is. The selections indicates nothing else.

Btw, what ever happened to Julius Nättinen?

You could mention Korpisalo as well. He's a better goalie than Vehviläinen, but probably quite cold since he hasn't played in a while and contractless so I doubt they'll ask him to come.

Nutty is injured though. He would've played for Columbus in the latest playoff games otherwise, so I'm sure it's not just a small scratch as he is quite important defenseman for Columbus.

Hännikäinen I'd like to see in the team and I believe he's crazy enough to come without a contract. Well he is like Lammikko, where his team doesn't see him as the most important piece for the team so WHC could be a good window for him to show Columbus and other teams that they should sign him. I think it's not too bad for grinders who aren't bunch of the core of their team to join WHC without a contract.

Average roster means they’ll go far, probably, since Jalonen is at the wheel.

Happy for Lankinen as he was a joy at IFK while Vehviläinen I have had my doubts in the past but it seems he has stepped up his game in the past few seasons.

Nice to see Kakko there but more quality up front would have helped; let’s see how things unfold.

Jalonen told that now one is coming to team anymore, not even from Dallas.
Jukka Jalonen vahvisti: Leijoniin ei tule enää vahvistuksia – "Dallasiin on oltu yhteydessä" (Finnish)

Wow. Can Jere Lehtinen be fired now? I thought that Dallas connection he has would do something for our team. Kurri was better at that job. Maybe Saku Koivu would be interested? At least everyone respects Saku, while it seems like Lehtinen has burnt some bridges with few of the players.

Korpisalo better than Vehviläinen? Based on what? Korpisalo has never impressed me, neither in the national mens team or u-20. His stats has never been good either, quite awful to be honest, so how is he better?

This is it, said Jalonen. Just so hard to believe that none of the regular NHL players came. Not even guy like Salomäki. It is absurd to hear after this season because there was a record amount of Finns in the NHL.

Finland's group is so tough, only "guaranteed" wins with this lineup should come against France and GB. I don't think they will lose to all Denmark, Germany and Slovakia but those games will be difficult. Games will be tight on the scoreboard.

The toughest games opponent-wise will be the first three games, but I do see a chance of upsetting Canada who have not played much together and I don't think their team is that good at this moment. If Finns get a good start in the tournament against the toughest teams it makes the journey easier but if they go to game 4 with 0-3 points, there's more pressure to win the rest of the games in the group stage.

Well, at least it will be exciting to see if the Finns make it past the group stage.

The team is deemed not to succeed which usually means they do well. I'm old enough to remember spring '92 when expectations were lower than ever.

I'm old enough to remember that spring too, but I'm not old enough to remember the WHCs of the 1960s and 1970s. I'm pretty sure expectations were lower back then than in 1992. At least in 1992 you didn't have to play the Soviet Union anymore, which made it easier to medal.

That's why I don't call this the worst Finnish roster ever, I just call it the worst roster they've had during the 30 years I've been following this event. It's weird this happened now when Finland has more quality players than they've had for a long time.

1992 they did have solid NHLers like Christian Ruuttu and Mikko Mäkelä though.

Mäkelä wasn't an NHLer in 1992. I don't know why he came back to Europe in 1991 but his stats from the 1990-91 season in Buffalo look very underwhelming for such a skillful player. Maybe he could have come back a couple of years earlier and we wouldn't have had to hear the name Vincent Manngard ever.

Well, at least it will be exciting to see if the Finns make it past the group stage.

They are given about a 80-90 percent chance to advance from the group stage.

It should be good to keep in mind that Pennanen and Manner are Jalonen's assistants in this tournament. So Jalonen was acutely aware of this entire time who of both of the Liiga finals teams deserves an invite, who does not, and who won't be available. It also explains how he was able to lock down the final roster so quickly, within just a couple of hours after the last preliminary game.

It's also hard to argue in favor of a player you think should have been included but wasn't, like Heponiemi - because you're basically arguing against his own head coach.
