Going with no reinforcements from AHL/NHL since there are never any guarantees:

Heponiemi - Kupari - Tolvanen
(why Kupari? Because he's the only one who has successful resume playing C in the Liiga who - in my opinion - is fast enough and skilled enough as 1st C, the other two are no-brainers)
Koivula - Kotkaniemi - Vesalainen
(again why Kotkaniemi who plays wing in the FEL? The guy is frigging huge for his age, has great skills and it's his natural position)
Talvitie - Somppi - Turkulainen (nice blend of experience and skill)
Ylönen - Räsänen - Tuulola (some size spiced up with scoring ability)

Ikonen (underwhelming season but a good backup player)
Kakko (insanely skilled and well bodied kid, but no experience outside JrA, which is a shame)

Heiskanen - Vaakanainen
Juolevi - Välimäki
Salo - Jokiharju

Luukkonen

This is what I'd like to see. Of course I would see how Kotkaniemi and Kupari would perform first at the pre-games/camp before actually slotting them into these roles. If the initial impression was anything opposite to promising, then move them at the wings. Still, both are playing FEL at the moment so I have little doubt they'd have trouble handling the competition at this level. We've seen how well Tolvanen performs with a speedy skilled center and I think Kupari is just that. I've watched Kotkaniemi in FEL as well this year and he's like a man-child. Should have no trouble handling the physical side of the game against few years older match ups. Maybe a bit unorthodox lineups but could be worth a shot especially considering the blue line this year. Don't think I've ever seen this talented defense from Finland at U20s. While knowing who we have there, it's like a safety net you can use to try and optimize the scoring while knowing you can trust the back-end is going to cover for mistakes.

You want 14 forwards and just six d-men?

Nah. Just didn't remember the max nr of players and wasn't arsed to check it. Thus just added a couple of candidates in case some got injured even before the showings.
1+1 would be ideal (if they can take 20 players) and if I was a gambler I'd pick Kakko over Ikonen, but doubt it's gonna happen.

I see. For future reference, it's 20+3 (so practically 13F+7D) in junior age tournaments. In men, it's 22+3.

I don't get these concerns for Luukkonen. He's been very stellar so far in international tournaments. This season he has 93,5 save% in 3 u20 games. Also he's been much better recently in Mestis too and is the highest drafted goalie we've had in some time for this tournament. I have full trust on him.

Wait, what? The chicken littles were pining after underage Luukkonen the entire last fall after his U18 heroics despite him having nothing more otherwise than Jr.A experience. And now when he's finally the designated starter, he isn't good enough anymore?

Methinks there's a lesson to be learnt in here somewhere, but it's probably too much to ask for people to get it. Something something of the level between U18 and Jr.A and U20 and grown men. Of course, as was pointed out above, Luukkonen's stats from the latter are quite fine. Maybe not stellar, but fine nevertheless.

In all fairness though, in the last couple of years we had a goalie with stellar stats in Liiga, but who ranged from subpar to adequate in his two U20 outings... Which goes to show that goalie stats are indicative at best. Biggest difference is ultimately made in what's between a netminder's ears. A so-so goalie can suddenly go on a hot streak if his head's in the right place, and a stellar one poops the bed royally if it isn't. We've still to see how UPL compares to Veini in that regard.

Tolvanen- Kuokkanen- Puljujarvi
Koivula- Rasanen- Vesalainen
Heponiemi- Kotkaniemi- Turkulainen
Koppanen- Kupari- Ylonen
Ikonen

Juolevi- Heiskanen
Valimaki- Vaakanainen
Salo- Jokiharju
Niemelainen

Luukkonen
Makiniemi
Lehtonen

You can mess the lines around however you want but this is what I’d send. Puljujarvi is nothing but a pipe dream, he won’t be available so I’d have Nurmi in the lineup. This would obviously change the lines.

Eemeli Rasanen? He's excelling on NA ice.

Look at the guys on the Finland blue line. It's a hard group to crack.

Rasanen has some good physical tools but his game is a bit unrefined for this level IMO

At least that's what I saw at the WJSS

He still may very well crack the roster as a 7D though

Rasanen has a shot but I think there is a clear top 6 defence they can send over and then a lot of guys fighting for the 7th role. It just depends on how they want to utilize that 7th spot. Rasanen would be in the mix but I don’t think this is his year.

Heiskanen, Juolevi, Välimäki, Jokiharju and Vaakanainen should all be ahead of him in pecking order. Then on 3rd pair we need more of a defensive player to play with Jokiharju most likely (one of Salo, Almari or Kotkansalo). It's an unusual situation and unfortunate one for Räsänen, I believe in any other year he would be in... we've never had as strong of a dcore on paper.

I think they want a faster guy on the 7th slot. Next year is his year, even then Finland could have Jokiharju and Honka available, lol.

Heponiemi-Kuokkanen-Tolvanen
Vesalainen-Somppi-Turkulainen
Kotkaniemi-Räsänen-Koivula
Nyman-Koppanen-Kupari
Ikonen

I'd take Ikonen as the last guy for his ability to play C or W, but there is no lack of options here with Tuulola, Ylönen, Nurmi...
Also interested in Severi Lahtinen. Dude has big numbers in Mestis but I have no idea how he is outside the statistics

I'm not convinced Heponiemi wont be playing as C, so if that happens he'll take the 1C role and all the LWs and Cs will rotate clockwise.

Välimäki-Heiskanen
Juolevi-Vaakanainen
Salo-Jokiharju
Räsänen

The 6 guys are pretty set in stone. Räsänen has done well in CHL but he probably wont get a game.

Do you think Olli Juolevi will be the captain? I can't recall anyone who's been captain in 2 WJCs except Filip Forsberg.

Is there a chance Kakko makes the team or is that next season? He's ripping U20.
Kakko hasn't even played a u18 game yet. No way they'll put him straight to the biggest jr tournament of the year. That being said we'll probably get to see him at u18 world championships this Spring

Crazy hard to predict what the forwards will look, too many options there, we could have 8 decent lines for this level and still have players who have played in Liiga left out:

Heponiemi-Kuokkanen-Tolvanen
Vesalainen-Ikonen-Turkulainen
Koivula-Räsänen-Tuulola
Kotkaniemi-Koppanen-Kupari
Moilanen-Luostarinen-Nurmi
Jääskä-Talvitie-Ylönen
Nyman-Somppi-Oksanen
Innala-Virtanen-Mäkinen

Jokiharju-Salo
Räsänen-Honka
Niemeläinen-Utunen
Kotkansalo

Forwards and defensemen depth are the best I've seen ever for us.
