Nurse-Parayko is an exciting pairing. Two monsters that can skate and are very good defensively.

Nurse looked downright awful today. Got caught flat-footed a number of times, several of which led to goals against. I don't watch a lot of Oilers games, but based on what I saw today he seems to be a talented player with next to no situational awareness. Hopefully it was just the jet lag.

Can Canada please get over this inane obsession with playing teammate together?! Watching Mcdavid get saddled with RNH as if that is some fantastic combo is a nightmare scenario. But I guess they see the tremendous success the Oilers are having and don't want to make any moves that would conflict with what the super geniuses are doing in Edmonton.

I thought they were the best duo on the ice today. I've never been super high on RNH as a centre but he looked *really* good on the wing against the USA.

Also, I thought the Pageau-Horvat-Dubois line was solid.

Really? Did you just type this to slag on the Oilers? With the Oilers Nuge had 15 points in 13 games with McDavid this past season. I thought they looked good today and Nuge was a bit snake bitten on some chances. So hey lets use this one game sample size in which they didn't look statistically good together but looked good watching him.

How did Parayko, Schwartz and Schenn look this morning?

Good, pretty good, not noticeable.

Well, it will be important for Canada to see if McElhinney is any good as Kuemper was weak today. Nurse was probably the worst defenceman. I'm not sure that he is a good fit for the larger ice surface (horrible decision on the second or third American goal) but we'll see. Overall the defence looked a bit better than I expected. It was said during the game that Edmundson isn't registered yet due to some lingering health issue, so that will be interesting to see. I thought that O'Reilly and Dubois were standouts, though more importantly McDavid and Barzal showed flashes. Peters will have to do some work with combinations, though the Horvat line probably deserves more time together.

It's unfortunate that Canada doesn't have a high end finisher or two at forward. A lot of wasted chances today, though that is common in the early games.

Hopefully McElhinney steps up in net. Kuemper looked terrible. This is the worst goalie tandem weve had in a while and its even worse than the 2014 tandem with Bernier and Scrivens.

This is certainly the worst goaltending tandem that I can remember. It's hard to believe they couldn't get a single NHL starting goalie.

McElhinney was awesome for the Leafs this season I'm not worried about him.

Still too bad Canada doesn't have any top starters coming over for this.

Are most of your posts this bad? They were fine today.

If SJS get bounced, hopefully Pickles and Burns will agree to come in late. Those 2 would put the d-corps into better alignment and players into roles and TOI more suited to their skillset/experience. 1 more experienced A, B or C team forward would go a long way as well into getting this crew right...just not sure who that player would be though, HC brass has already burned through those invites/ or ignored those players. There really isn't much left to choose from other than Coutour/Johansen...and neither have ever shown any interest in this tournament.

and good grief....that goaltending display by Kuemper yesterday was just ...well, we all know what it was.

I guess McElhinney will make the start tomorrow and then Kuemper gets another shot in the 3rd. game...1 more shaking performance from him, send him to the press box. name the 19 year old Dipietro to the team.

and I took a peek at the Canada v USA GDT...I see it was its usual abomination with the same list of characters with the same crap...every tournament. never fails.

I hope M.Jones accept invite too.

I don't think that they would invite two defencemen. They have seven, though as noted Edmundson hasn't been formally added due to injury. I don't think that they will snub him if he turns out to be healthy enough, though there are still two available skater spots for Canada. One top defenceman would be good though. Burns would fit the theme of Canada's defence but Vlasic is probably the better fit.

I wasn't particularly concerned about Kuemper after some mediocre goalies played well the last few years but yeah, he spent half of the last game swimming. McElhinney will need to step in, though the next game is only against South Korea so he presumably won't be really tested.

If Edmundson really injured . . .Hockey Canada can add 2 D

I know. Since they brought him to Europe and have used him in practices I expect that Edmundson isn't significantly injured though. Considering that Hockey Canada doesn't usually add an eighth defenceman I expect nothing for now. Adding one more defenceman would probably be for the best though.

McDavid and a good complimentary player should be absolutely dominant and look one step ahead of the defenders much like Crosby and Guentzel do.

It's one game. I remember William Nylander looked awful his first game last year at WHC and ended up the MVP of the tourney.

We'll see going forward, he was one of the few Oilers who played quite well this season. I expect he'll bounce back.

I do worry that we don't really have a true #1 on the blue line this though and our goaltending is suspect.

It was one game but does Nurse's skill set really translate to the larger ice surface? He has speed but not noteworthy agility and his hockey sense is just average. Peters needs to install a system to cover for his group of large defencemen. Honestly he did a good job of it yesterday for the most part, just two notable breakdowns (Nurse's being the most glaring) and goaltending letting them down.
