My best guess...
Rieger Lorenz (AJHL) - Adam Fantilli - Nic Moldenhauer
Tanner Howe - Connor Bedard - Matthew Wood (BCHL)
David Goyette - Kocha Delic - Evan Konyen
Michael La Starza (USHL) - Pano Fimis - Josh Filmon
Matthew Ward - Brayden Schuurman
Other Options:
Tyson Dyck (BCHL), Bowden Singleton (AJHL), Brice Cooke, Aiden Castle, Daimon Gardner (USHL - loan?), Macklin Celebrini (Shattuck), Joshua Davies, Jake Sloan
Owen Pickering - Lukas Dragicevic
Grayden Siepmann - Layton Feist
Spencer Sova (if Erie misses playoffs) - George Fegaras (OJHL - If North York loses)
Rylan Brown (AJHL) - Alec Leonard
Other Options:
Alexis Daviault (if Sarnia misses playoffs), Matthew Morden (SAC), Oliver Bonk
Reid Dyck
Matthew Kieper
Nolan Lalonde (if Erie misses playoffs)
Other Options:
Joseph Costanzo
Paxton Geisel (USHL - could be same as Chicago’s loan)
Wild card questions:
- Does Canada let Bedard repeat the U18's (they should)
- Does Erie or Sarnia take the last OHL playoff spot?
- How many 2005's or even 2006's does HC take?
- Will North York (OJHL) lose to JRC in round two?
- Other surprise additions from playoff teams?
- Will Evan Konyen play for Canada or is he committed to keeping US cards open?
- How many Tier 2 players will Canada take?
The forward group should be pretty good, but I am putting Schuurman in that every day lineup. He is a center, but I can see him playing on the wing too. He could fit seamlessly in that Konyen spot if Konyen is not playing for Canada. Otherwise, I would put him in over La Starza. Castle may also have an edge over La Starza, given he has chemistry with Fimis, or if they want depth guys with more size when they already have a ton of skill in the top part of the lineup, then a guy like Sloan could make it.
Goaltending is pretty much what we could have expected even if everyone was available. Divincentiis from NB may have had an edge on some of them, but Dyck was picked for the Top Prospects game.
The concern is defense, especially when it comes to their own end. Pickering/Dragicevic are a bit raw in their own end, but they are high profile defensemen with good size and skating combination so they should be able to handle this tournament as the top pairing. It is the rest of the defense that is concerning. I can live with Sova and Siepmann in these circumstances. I doubt either are going high in the draft, but Sova has a lot of raw skill and Siepmann can play a solid all-around game even though he is smaller. I don't know much about Fegaras, and I am not impressed by Feist at all. Fegaras may be fine, but if Morden has more of a refined defensive game, he may make more sense in the top 6 than Feist when you already have Dragicevic/Sova/Pickering. I would contact Cape Breton for Francois-James Buteau, as he is another larger, physical stay-at-home who can handle tougher defensive minutes. However, the bonus is that he has the puck skill and skating ability to keep up with the more offensively skilled blueliners too. Cape Breton is already eliminated and Buteau is more than good enough to be on that roster. I would also look at Kalem Parker out of Victoria too as a RD. Late 04' who has handled top 4 minutes on a poor team.
