If it is like the last Olympics - I always felt it unfair that the States/Canada can't send their AHL players. For all intents and purposes, that is their Domestic league along with NCAA and even CHL in some cases. They miss out on a LOT of really good non NHL players. I was impressed as hell by that Bronze last time. But you add in AHL and Canada/US have much stronger teams IMO.

Not really a fan of the 'Olympics' any Olympics, summer or winter. I'll watch and am invested in a NHL Olympic hockey tournament, but without NHL players I really couldn't less who they send. It's a non-tournament in my opinion. No different than the NHL gimmicky 2016 WCoH.

Need a World Cup of Hockey this summer or next, causing watching Team Canada with out NHL players is terrible

Honestly screw the world cup of hockey. Last thing I would want to do is hand gary cash for not participating in the Olympics.

Send the WJC team if they win that's probably the solution to get at least some interest.

Disgusts me that betteman can't see the value in the Olympics.

You know this clown will still have the all Star game in Vegas though

What other pro sport even cares about the Olympics?

Make a world cup. In the offseason. Its far better.

What pro sport cares about the Olympics? All leading European hockey leagues, all leading European soccer leagues (btw. the best in the world), all basketball leagues, all handball leagues etc etc.

And that's a wrap, boys and girls. No NHL Olympics this year.

Get on the band wagon for a no gimmick teams World Cup in September

OR

An Epic Border Clash 8 game Summit Series Canada v USA.

Cannot see either of those in the near future, though a World Cup without the gimmicks would be good. Now speaking of those gimmicks, never forget that due to the 2016 gimmicks we all got to see what we wanted - McDavid playing with....... Jack Eichel. How cool it was, and of course McDavid would have ample opportunities to play with Canada's best in the years to come.

Well, see you all in 2026. In my opinion by that time Canada will have a better chance of winning than in 2022, along with Finland and the USA seeing their stock rise, whilst Russia and Sweden regress somewhat; Canada 2022 was kind of a transitional group in my opinion (the most stacked transitional group ever nonetheless). Who knows, maybe by then Germany becomes competitive with the top 5. McDavid (29) MacKinnon (30) Point (29) Wright (22) and perhaps Bédard (20) down the middle is a frightening proposition, whilst the Defense doesn’t really lose anyone irreplaceable and gains several stars. Need to find a goalie by then though, that would be my only concern

I'm pessimistic for 2026. I think that Canada had better odds in 2018 than in 2022 and I would expect that trend to continue. There are improvements that need to be made to development, most obviously in terms of goaltending but elsewhere else as well. Anyway, on to 2026 I guess.

I'm big on Team Canada 2026 being the clear favorite at this point. A lot of development has to go right between now and then. But I love the way the '26 team is looking. Hopefully the spring is better than the winter, that we get a WHC and start getting some of those '26 prospective players some international reps.

Yeah I would somewhat disagree, I think there were questions about certain position groups this year that won’t be there in 2026; can think of left défense and natural wingers notably. But yes a goaltender is essential

edit: responded to the wrong post

It would be great to see some of the key players of the future show up to the IIHF wc this year. I don't expect it, but might as well start building to 2026. I wouldn't hold out hope but I'd like to see one signature McDavid run at that tournament as well.

Damn this thread got depressing real fast. If it doesn't happen this year I think we're owed a proper 12 team world cup or something soon.

LeBrun: Sidney Crosby on his push for one more Olympics and the 'disappointing' decision that's likely coming

LeBrun talked with Crosby about the disappointment regarding the announcement to come. Says that Crosby was one of the main guys pushing for participation on the Canadian side of things. You'd have to think that Ovechkin did the same thing with Russia. Unfortunate for guys who were outspoken about wanting to go, having never gone before, like Stamkos and Marchand.

Well, it's not the Olympics, but maybe Sid + a few others can give us one more WHC team like 2015...either this spring or next. I'm easy. or push the NHL/NHLPA to quickly put together a legit World Cup Sept. 2022.

The NHL stance seems to be that it would take a year or more to organize a tournament, which sounds excessive at least in optimal times. Probably won't bother with so much uncertainty month to month. I'll be very surprised if Crosby ever shows up at the IIHF wc again. Maybe at a World Cup event, but it also wouldn't surprise if he's done internationally. It would be nice to see McDavid have a big tournament at the IIHF wc but he's already won so who knows what he will do.

There is probably only one more tournament at the WHC for Connor if that, I suspect he is pretty much done with that tournament. It seems to be with the biggest of our stars that they participate in it once, maybe twice right away in their career (seems like they feel it's an obligation as their teams are not in the playoffs because they go to a lousy team as the number one pick) and then once their team gets at least respectable they are done with it.
