I can't believe I'm starting to side with @ORRFForever here, but Marner's performance thus far isn't doing him any favors. If he did have a spot heading into the season, he's certainly doing his best to play himself off the team.

Oh, and anyone who thinks Tavares should be on the club should also watch Leaf games. He's also a non-factor way too often. And he's slow as molasses out there.

Glad to hear it. :thumbu:

Since he's playing his way off an Olympic roster spot, and he is playing like crap, at least we get Marner for the WHC in May. That's a little good news.

and @ORRFForever don't start with your leave him at home crap.

I don't know, neither Perron nor Hyman have much of a history with Hockey Canada. Kind of a prerequisite if you look back on things. In recent memory, Logan Couture is the only player I can think of that didn't suit up for Canada in either the WJHCs or WHCs and ended up making our A team (2016 World Cup). There have probably been others, but he's the one that comes to mind immediately. Perron played in the Canada/Russia Super Series ages ago, but that's it.

Perron obviously has his GM with STL selecting the team. He's also a pretty impactful player, and has been for a few years now. I wouldn't personally select him, but wouldn't be all that disappointed if Armstrong did. There is a chance that Hyman rides McDavid's coattails to Beijing, just like Kunitz did. I truly hope HC has learned its lesson from the Kunitz selection; that 1-0 semifinal win vs. the United States could have easily been a 3-0 game if Crosby and Bergeron had a better finisher playing with them.

At some point though, there will simply be too many better players in front of these guys and my guess is both Perron and Hyman revert back to their means. I think Perron has some chance (call it 20%) of making the team, moreso than does Hyman.

Looking at the 2014 Olympic team, every player had played for Canada previously (OG, WC, WJC, U18s or U17s).
There are a few who had only played at one level, including Mike Smith making his debut at the 2013 WC.

2016 World Cup actually had Corey Crawford, plus Braden Holtby who played a single disastrous game at the U18s. Couture actually played at the U17 and U18s. Muzzin's only previous experience came at the 2015 WC.

Every member of the 2010 Olympic team had played for Canada previously.

Chabot was a train wreck last year in his own zone (independent of who his partner was he made bad choices with the puck), but I could see him as a 7th power play defenseman

He played an insane amount and had no support on team filled with rookies and sophomores.

Like Karlsson, he’s much more effective at even strength than on the PP where his mobility is more of an asset.

Besides, who cares how he played last year?

That kind of thinking is what led to Gretzky assigning spots to guys who were playing poorly in 2006.

I'm just stealing this from Reddit, but JT in what appears to be Team Canada apparel. Even as a Leafs fan, I really hope he's not on the final roster.

People continue to pencil Makar in on the top pairing when he has struggled pretty badly early on in this season.

This is the shakiest Team Canada's defense has been in over a decade. While there are plenty of hype names on the list, none of them are nearly as steady as the guys from the last three major tournaments.

Part of the problem is that Pietrangelo isn't as good as he was in St. Louis.

Taking cues from the recent Star Wars movies apparently.

It's been a handful of games. He doesn't need to be stapled to the top pairing but it will be very, very surprising if Makar isn't in the top six and they will probably roll the pairings somewhat evenly.

I think the whole defense is in a state of flux tbh. There are some red flags with each of the potential selections that make this iteration of the roster the least certain to win in quite some time. And that includes the guy that was already named (Pietrangelo).

Yes that's undeniable, but I think the take away is, does this mean he's on the team? Was this a leaked image? Why would they ask someone to model the attire who won't even be part of the Olympics?
As a Leaf fan, I just can't believe he will be on the team. There is NO way.

He's an "ambassador" for Lululemon - who makes the Canadian Olympic team's attire.

We'll see how things look when the sample size gets larger. Some guys have been worse than people expected, some have been better. I do think that there is still a lot of competition on Canada's blueline but there are a lot of potential candidates in case some falter.
