I think players with profiles like Colby Barlow’s are more often than not Top 10 picks. Not uncommon to be closer to Top 5. I think it’s still a great draft even at 13th. Just not well-suited to your needs, it sounds like.

Yeah, it's not like Barlow (or Wood for that matter) don't fill a need for Buffalo (and I would go so far as to include Danielson in that).

Gritted my teeth and voted Simashev. Still think that's a "need" pick over anything else, and boy can that invite trouble.

Starting to get on the Barlow bandwagon though -- he still fits a need and wouldn't be a reach here like Simashev would be.

f*** it. I changed my vote.

They won't reach on a d, even if I maybe want them too.

If this was draft night, I'd fully expect our pick to be Barlow. We love goals.

For some reason, I can't help but think that they don't have Wood high up the draft board. Idk.

Went Barlow but I wouldn't be mad about Simashev.

Reinbacher and Leonard are in my top tier of hopefuls, but I expect them both to be gone as is the case here. Next group would be Barlow, Wood and Danielson.

So give me Barlow here.

Wait, what? What did I do? :biglaugh:

This is the point where I doubt my ideas the most. :surrender
You put some effort in. I find few things less interesting than researching draft prospects. The last time I really dig into it was nothing but frustration and anger. I still hold a grudge and an ignore for several posters around here for the Joulevi, Sergachev, Chychrun draft, as my posts on Chychrun may occasionally hint at.

Trade the pick with two or three of the 2nd's to trade up and select Reinbacher.

We were in the bottom half of the league in points by defensemen with one of the highest scoring teams in the league. I don't understand the opinion that we can't have any more puck moving defensemen.

ASP all day. If he doesn't end up fitting, he'll be extremely valuable as a trade asset.

Simashev could be good too, but I've never seen him play myself, so it's hard to vote for him.

If someone gets him to the offensive zone he can pass it…thats for sure. But hes not great at transitioning the puck himself and he’s worse in his own end. Weak shot too. Gonna be a great powerplay D. Which he won’t do any of here for roughly 9 years at the earliest.

So you need to both protect him with a defensive partner and count on someone else to move the puck.

But he can pass!

Sandin Pellikka is kind of like Montour - he can lug the mail from zone to zone. But the game is kind of high event at both ends, good and bad, when he's out there. Willander is a good puck mover, a slice below ASP for mobility, but doesn't have the current concerns about his defensive game.

Simashev has size but is also a responsible player at both junior and pro levels, with more offense in his game at the MHL level. It's not something I can quantify with Simashev - it feels right what he is doing off puck and defensively. Yes, there is a lot yet to round out but the tool box is there and the tools are very solid.

They could always get really weird and go for Gulyayev who is completely all afterburner, no rudder, attack-attack-attack in a small package. But I've watched him skate into the wrong direction or directly at the side boards for no apparent reason so I see the offensive skills and wonder what the hell he's thinking.

Counter-arguments:

1) he's barely 18 playing in a men's league
2)puck moving skills aren't just valuable on the PP. Whose to say he won't be better on PP2 than Power anyway?
3) Passing is maybe the most important skill a defenseman can have IMO. Really good passers don't spend as much time in their own zone.
