What should the Leafs do

Same.

This is actually not that bad. Dubas would get Marner reunion, plus no one would mourn homeboy departure if they were distracted by Sid.

MLSE would love the merch sales too. It would be bad PR to trade Marner for almost anyone, not Sid.

Yes to picks

I would love to see 2 top 15picks this year and 2-3 more 2nds. Not from a Marner trade just in general. Taking that step back could really kickstart this up.

I was thinking about a dynamic core like we have now, insulated with 32-34ish year old vets that will come for a year to take a stab at a cup for a discount. With the way our cap is we need as many discounts as possible. We also need playoff drive and winning experience. What they have been doing up to here has been a flop so.

Very difficult for us to develop and keep long term with our cap structure.

I don't see how any fan can say they should sell. The window is open, and the core is at their peak. Go for it!

I'm not saying they need to buy as aggressively as they have in the past. It's pretty clear that some deadline acquisitions have a hard time getting used to playing for the Leafs. But you have to add some depth, if nothing else.

I'd like to see (1) some changes to the defense, like a Tanev type. And (2) a solution in goal would be nice, but that's not an easy thing to do at the deadline. If those 2 things can't happen, then no reason to break the bank. We don't need another Foligno or ROR this season. Move some mid-late round picks for some vet experience and depth.

Jacob Middleton would be a solid addition depending on how Minny fairs leading up to the TDL. It wouldn’t be the top line RHD get, but we need to stop kidding ourselves. Its not happening.

I really hope they aren't buyers this year. I don't care if the player is a rental or has term. This is not the year to do this, the prices are too high, and the Leafs have way too many holes to fill. We need a year where we take a step back and not get rid of futures. Dubas absolutely wrecked the Leafs prospect/pick pool.

If the Leafs trade their first this year or Cowan, Minten, Niemela, I'd be pretty upset. (I am pretty confident they will actually move their first this year, so I am prepared to be upset)
It would be a dereliction of duties for the Leafs to not pursue a top-flight long-term right-handed defensemen if the opportunity presents itself.

If it's someone like Andersson even Cowan might be required.

Sid has only 1 yr left to play.
I would trade Mitchy even up for him today. Now that is playoff leadership and knowledge.
This is the kind of stupid trade the Leafs made in the pre-cap era. You know, the kind that slammed the door closed on any chance of a window beyond a year?
I'd love to get Sid, but if you trade a core 4 piece for a guy a few years away from retirement, you're simply screwing yourself over. Again, we have learned this the hard way. MULTIPLE TIMES.

Middleton would actually be a really good target. Signed for next year as well at a very manageable cap hit. Would allow us to still try and address the need for a proper partner for Rielly in the off-season.

Rielly - DeMelo
Middleton - Liljegren
Benoit - McCabe

Would be a pretty good physical blueline.

Stupid is 56 yrs and not maximizing your teams talent NOW.
Stupid is not realizing that one of the core 3 needs to go
Stupid is not realizing we have no leadership and Mitchy ain't ever going to supply it.
Add Sid and maybe a Rusk or 3rd dman plus a first rounder we have a better chance.
2 yrs from now we lose JT salary, Sids salary and we can move ahead.
We are going to lose Mitchy as a free agent, so win now.

This will never happen as both have ntc, but it would be a great dream.

Putting a trade aside, I don't think they would ever let the guy leave as a free agent, just as they didn't let Matthews or Nylander leave.
Right, but if they over pay him like the last time with ntc or nmc we are pouched again. Get something now that will help us...

Any trade deadline deal would be an absolute waste of assets.

Yeah, that is a different story. I'm pretty sure they are going to give Marner a monstrous contract.
In this you are probably right and it will drive the nail even further in the coffin of what shoukd have been an awesome rebuild

Non RFA players with a year left and a NMC are borderline negative value. We get peanuts for him. He dictates everything.

They are going to pay a ransom and ditch JT. No point talking about that.

What we can talk about is them trading out expiring contracts this season for a few kicks at the can in this years deep draft.

Any D that includes Brodie is a bad idea, having playing top pairing is a recipe for disaster……..

I agree, but if you can help with the other 40 minutes of ice time why not. Theres zero chance Tre/Shanny waste a year of whats left of the “competitive” window.

To Toronto: Jake Middleton + Frederick Gaudreau
To Minnesota: Nick Robertson + Conor Timmins + NYI 3rd Rounder

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Bertuzzi - Tavares - Nylander
Domi - Gaudreau - Jarnkrok
Gregor - Kampf - Holmberg

Rielly - Brodie
Middleton - Liljegren
Benoit - McCabe

With Middleton, McCabe and Benoit, that’s three defenceman you have to worry about who will knock you off your skates. Worry about finding a proper partner for Rielly in the off-season.

Lets talk reality and disaster that Dubas left the Leafs in..

Due the inheriting by Treliving of the LTIR of Muzzin and Murray the Leafs were not able to build up cap space for the TDL the way long term IR cap space is used to replace injured players.

This is the Leafs current situation cap wise, with the Leafs having a mere $35k free cap space which wouldn't be enough to hire an part time accountant never mind bring in TDL players. .

Leafs only option would be dealing roster players for new roster players where CAP IN = CAP OUT almost at par.

With the Leafs nestled in Cap Hell and having the least free cap space any of the 32 teams and also sitting in a wild card spot it would be best for Leafs to simply ride out this year AS IS and take their changes hoping they qualify to make the playoffs, and then see what happens.

Until Leafs can get out from under the boat anchor of the Tavares contract and the upcoming raises of Auston, Willy and assuming Mitch things will be even worse next year Cap wise so that also would impact this year any players with term would only make next year even more complicated.

The Leafs are not assembled as a series Cup winning contender as their top heavy spending on forwards is more for entertainment purposes only and to validate and drive gate receipts. Trying to catch lightning in a bottle for 4 playoff rounds is a pipe dream and more fantasy then reality based logical thinking.

Leafs have Reaves, McMann, Timmins and Lagesson who can be waived and sent down to remove cap if needed. That’s almost 4 million right there and still icing a 20 man roster. They have plenty to work with if they really wanted to.
