If we’re going direct comparisons Laughton is younger, faster, plays a more aggressive style, and takes the puck to the net harder and more frequently. That’s the style we want if we’re going full Brindy. When I said what I said about Laughton it was under the assumption that Staal was getting signed and was going to be here. I’ve always assumed that. My idea of we should build the team that Rod wants always had Staal in it for this coming year.

I think you’ve heard me enough over the years say I’m not the biggest Staal fan, though I enjoy him much more once he became the 3C. Signing him at this point for four years to me is in a giggly sort of way “gross”. I don’t mind the money, which I said. The contract and cap hit aspect doesn’t bother me at all. I was just fine moving on from him either now or maybe next year.

I don’t see Staal as an aggressive player, he’s always been a bit of a gentle giant. He’s a moose though, contact comes to him constantly and bounces off. He could use a few more guys in support of the style that have the skill level to make us better within the style.

My point is 2 fold. 1) what you described for Laughton: "A hard working grinder that can score a bit and is a good character guy" is a very apt description for Jordan Staal.

2) Whether he's "more aggressive" or "goes to the net more", it hasn't resulted in tangibly scoring more goals/points/driving more offense. Laughton hasn't outscored Fast 5v5 the last 3 years and BARELY outscored Martinook. Granted, there could be a team component to it.

I do think he'd be an upgrade over Martinook on Staal's line so I'm with you there. I just think there are a lot of plug and play players that would excel on that line with Staal so I'm not sure spending a bunch on a guy who just had a career year makes sense vs. addressing other scoring needs upfront. I won't be disappointed if we got him though.

EDIT: Actually my point was 3 fold. I couldn't resist poking fun at you using your own words.

To that, anyone know who Laughton's primary linemates were this past season?

Kevin Hayes not only plays in our division, but is probably in the top 20% of salary.

Cates is a rookie that had one less point than Jarvis this year. Allison? Apparently a 2016 second rounder I’ve never heard of.
Cates had very good defensive numbers (not just from that one site we make fun of) and played all situations this year.

To be fair to Jarvis, Cates is older and actually got more ice time per game (about 1:30 more albeit with slightly less powerplay ice time).

True, but the discussion was quality of linemates. How old they were last year was irrelevant in that context.

I’m not suggesting Cates will be better than Jarvis (I don’t think he will), just stating that one of Laughton’s linemates was similar to Jarvis last year.

I know who Hayes is, that was hyperbole(or something). The other two literally never saw those names before in my life.

Your edit is was what I assumed this was all about! Either that or you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

I knew the stats would be what you said they are, I guess I don’t care. It’s a style thing. Guys in the mold of Coleman, Paul, Bennett…etc.

The points in the regular season are irrelevant to me. We should be making the playoffs with or without a big improvement in scoring, and we’ve shown we can grind it out pretty far in the playoffs with what we have. Make a squad chock full of these guys and just own what we are….could be the way to a cup. Fits the coaching style. Just a thought that’s been sticking with me for a bit now.

I'd be all in for getting Garland or Coleman. They'd be a for sure 3rd line upgrade, but could also play top 6.

I think we have to make one move this offseason for a scorer. It's likelier that the Borg goes after a distressed asset at low acquisition cost, or a scorer with retention, than a free agent. We'll see.

Nevertheless I'm posting in the TDA thread. I hope we get TDA. If we get TDA and don't deal Pesce, that makes our defense even better than last year. (TDA is not as strong defensively as de Haan, but he is much faster and 1000x the offensive player, so it makes the D more versatile and well rounded.)

Rumor: TDA Trade may happen on Saturday, July 8th.
Article:
However, the Hurricanes' activity doesn't stop there. Pagnotta said that the Tony DeAngelo acquisition is set to take place on July 8, adding another intriguing dimension to Carolina's defensive corps.
