I dont mind Carlson at a cheap price, but burning through most of our available cap for him is a nightmare scenario I would think.
Giving him $10M per, even on a two year deal, is a non-starter for me. He has to take a discount from that AAV and maybe that means JBB throws him a year or two extra of term to make up for it. I don't believe the Lightning's RHD situation is dire from subtracting Raddysh because I have more faith in Crozier than perhaps a lot of people and Moser (and to a lesser extent Lilleberg) can play off hand on the right side.
IMO, the rumor about JBB focusing on getting a center to give them two legit scoring line centers and push Cirelli down to being more of a 3C again was always the smart play and focusing dollars on that pursuit is what I'd prefer.
Bear in mind that JBB is usually decent at concealing what he's going to do in the trade market. It's hard to hide what you're going to do in free agency because agents are paid to blab (so the smoke around Carlson probably has some validity to it because Carlson's agent is probably giving oxygen to the idea of him going to the Lightning). Same thing with the Guentzel sign and trade when it happened. But none of us had even the slightest inkling of the Sergachev/Moser trade before it happened. I suspect while we're all focusing on the Carlson rumor, there's a serious trade being worked on that is equally or even more important.
As for Darren Raddysh, I'm happy he got his bag and presuming he has good financial guidance he and his family just became generationally wealthy. Not rich... wealthy. That extra $20M or so after taxes that he beat out of the Leafs that he couldn't get from us will grow to be about $80M in his 60's if he doesn't touch his principle and has it in something that gets him a 6% annual return. Like I told you all from the beginning, there's no way in hell he was ever turning that down. You all wouldn't either, and if I were your agent I'd consider it my fiduciary responsibility to smack the ish out of you if you tried to.
I look at that contract and I still can't fathom the value proposition that would justify giving that player a guaranteed contract worth $68.5 million dollars, but I'm not mad at him. If they're dumb enough to give it to you be smart enough to take it and invest it wisely. My only advice would be that he get very strict about avoiding reading/listening to what's said about him in the media, because I think the odds are 50/50 or better the Leafs fans and press will turn on him (quickly) because the skill set doesn't match that contract, IMO.
