The last few minutes sucked, but let’s not act like we weren’t within a crossbar and several bounces of tying that game, after dominating the entire third period.

Sucks to give up ENGs, but that’s the risk you run when you’re trying to win a game and not a stat sheet.

Pretty much every team dominates the 3rd period when they are down by two going in.

And when I say we don't have the luxury to wait on Hanifin, I mean that we absolutely must make the playoffs this year. This fanbase absolute cannot go with another missed year after all the "this is absolutely the make or break year for the playoffs". We miss it this year, whatever core fans we have left will turn away and at that point they might have to move the franchise.

But who knows, maybe that's been the plan all along.

Although I agree that was a poor coaching decision, Noah Hanifin *has* to sell out to stop that. The side skate "ole" doesn't cut it in that situation. Honestly, all he had to do was go down to one knee and he stops that easily. I hate to say I told you so, but we should have traded him this summer. He's just not a good defender, and he's not good enough offensively to make up for his D. He's a No. 5 d-man and we could have traded him like a No. 2.

I have to admit, his effort is balls and his apparent entitled attitude is wearing thin on me.

We can probably still trade him on that potential, especially with his contract extension, but we would have to move rather soon. He still has the potential to be a great player, but the canes need more than potential. They need scoring and skill.

Ok, but again we had like 10 close calls including one off the crossbar.

People are jumping off the roof like this was an actual 5-1 game. This was a 2-1 game against the top team in the league, with some garbage-time junk stats thrown in.

As frustrated and mad as I am, this is right. It only hurts so much because of how close it was

While that may be the case for some, I just watched the same game this team has played 1,000 times and it ended exactly the same way. Power fail twice, immediately give up a goal. Goalie makes a big save, everyone falls all over themselves including the goalie and immediately get scored on. And ofcourse zero finish. Same shit different year.

If we’re trying to make the playoffs, we should be beating them like any other team. The Dallas loss was excused with the same reasoning. Oh, they’re good teams and we came back for twenty minutes when they weren’t trying for offense. It’s easy to downplay a loss when you isolate game by game but we know the story here and it goes beyond tonight

Guys - I love your squad right now. Darling is looking fairly steady in net and with that D - which is ****ing amazing - I think you'll make it in the playoffs. That's a good squad you've got here.

Eastern Carolina BBQ RULES! See ya next time!

"Good" doesn't get it done, unfortunately. This team pretty desperately needs to make the playoffs, this year, and I have a hard time seeing it happening. It's frustrating because they're probably the hardest working team in the league and results are not reflective of that.

What exactly is the story here, then?

Agreed. However, its not like there aren't glaring weaknesses that could be addressed and could push the team to a better quality of play. Sure, tonight was really a 1 score game, but to win the Canes would have had to shoot perfectly, and they don't have the players to do that. There in lies the problem with this team. They can't score.

If you have a defensive prospect who can still get a great return on a team with one of the better first line defenses in the game, and you know there are teams willing to deal a legit 1st liner, it's worth the serious consideration.

This is correct.

We all know this team is going to go on one of their hot streaks in the last weeks as they always do. This is why I get so pissed off with these early season losses. Turn three or four of them into wins, this is a playoff team some years.

In a league where more than half the teams make the playoffs, missing it for 8 straight years is unacceptable. Hell they don't even have to make it every year, but not once in 8 years? That can't happen.

Never good enough to make the playoffs, never bad enough to pick a McDavid/Matthews/Eichel type. That will kill interest in the team so fast.

They start late? They don’t capitalize on chances? They don’t have firepower to climb back? Just like very other season

they don't have the players to do that. There in lies the problem with this team. They can't score.

Jeff Skinner
Jordan Staal
Justin Williams
Sebastian Aho
Teuvo Teravainen
Elias Lindholm
Victor Rask

Seems to me that our offensive results are commensurate with the level of talent you see on this list. We basically have 1 guy who has serious offensive chops. Everybody else is a “gee, wouldn’t it be nice if...” scenario.

Of course a team like this is going to struggle to score, end up behind in games, and make late pushes. The fact that they aren’t getting totally blown out of the water by the Tampas of the league is a testament to what they’re doing defensively.

Well gee, let’s roll over and piss away another season then. If one goal is what we can expect, surely our defense can’t hold teams to a goal or less a game

And that's exactly it. What can we do to improve upon this? Games like tonight will continue to be the norm this year because we don't have any finishers. So how do we get one?

I mean, our biggest offseason move was to address goaltending.

Other than that we added a 36 year old, 40-50 point winger. That’s not going to raise the bar for a below average offensive team. If that’s just pissing a season away, then we knew it in August and shouldn’t have had our hopes up.

To the extent that we have a chance to make the playoffs, it’s because we have the ability to throw a blanket over the best players in the league (which Slavin did) and to get good enough goaltending to keep us in the game (which Darling did) and then hope we get the breaks offensively. Tonight we didn’t get the breaks. Predictable result is predictable.
