Got all bummed for one split second when my brother told me Larsson was traded, and instantly perked up the second he said "...for Taylor Hall". Love Adam, hate that we'll have to fill the hole on the blue line that he's going to leave, but holy Jebus, you don't pass up on a one-for-one swap for a talent like Hall.
The way Larsson's getting undersold around the league illustrates how little the NHL media pays attention to any team that isn't in eastern Canada, an original six city, or Pennsylvania (fine, maybe St. Louis or LA get some attention, too). I can't count how many times we've heard over the past decade that the Devils still play in "the swamp" or that they're still "a trap-first team" or any other bit of nonsense. For years, any interview on NHL media about the Devils began and ended with questions about Lou and Marty, because none of the interviewers ever knew about any of the other players in the organization.
Due to this, people are seeing Larsson's offensive stat line and freaking out that he's "no better than a #3" or some such nonsense, because they haven't actually watched him or bothered to analyze his game beyond cursory glances. Edmonton got a really good one, here.
That said, it's understandable that Edmonton fans would be upset; Larsson is excellent, but it's perfectly reasonable to expect a larger return for Hall. On that front, the reaction makes more sense; you don't minimize what you can acquire for assets like that.
Saw it earlier in the thread, but we still have over $30 million in cap space, eh? Man. Have to figure there's something in the works to re-beef up the blue line, but with that kind of flexibility I have to think Shero wants to keep pushing ahead for big, fast skaters on offense. Does that mean Okposo? Do they throw the money at Demers, instead? Do you sign one, then try to address the other spot via trade? Whatever they do, this is as exciting as it's been to be a fan in ages.
