Signing him was the end of the Shanaplan. His contract raised everyone else’s salary demands and then they couldn’t afford to sign or trade for a top defenseman. Total inexperience of Shanahan and Dubas.

Tavares came in to a team that was over 100 points and they remained the same. His second year they regressed. Again I am open to different views and know I might be unique in believing that sometimes the best decision you can make is say thank you Tavares, good luck in SJ. Dubas’ first offer was rumoured to be 9.5. Which would of been fair.
Yes they remained the same because they inked JT

JVR/Boz had just left,,, getting a combined 12 million in the UFA market

he almost matched their combined totals from the season before

he saved the leafs last season

From an outside observer: you don't pay $11 million for meat and potatoes - that should get you lobster with caviar! If he really wanted to help Toronto, he could have left a little $$ on the table to pay for needed depth, because that is showing IMHO.
He took less to come to Toronto. Although I don’t think he’s worth it. It was Marner, Nylander and Matthews who got more than they should have as 22 year olds.

McDavid raised everyone's salary demands. RFA and UFA contracts are not alike.

Trust me, he got text and calls from the boys in the league asking him to take a big chunk. He doesn't need it with all his endorsements, Crosby and Ovie set their own bar and taking less to win. McDavid is part of the NBA generation, seeing how much control they have and has helped out his fellow NHLers.

At what detriment to team building? We shall see.

Why is there this narrative that Crosby and Ovie took discounts when signing their contracts... I’m pretty sure their percentage of cap space they took up at the time of signing was similar to Mcdavids. As well as the fact that it was under a different CBA and those contract wouldn’t even be allowed now with how many years they signed for.

Because they came into the league when the league was tossing around PPs like candy, especially to the teams with big stars they had to promote, and this resulted in people vastly overrating what Crosby and Ovechkin were prior to signing their post-ELC contracts.

It was actually more. Crosby was 17.30% x 5 years. Ovechkin was 18.96% x 13 years, on a now illegal contract that bought quite a few decline years. McDavid's pre-signing period also tends to be a bit overrated, but he actually took a discount (750k), and ended up at 16.67% x 8 years. Probably the best contract of the 3 at the time they were signed.

Tavares as a wing long term?

Other than the optics it's the right call. Even if it's not on Matthews LW, I'd rather have Nylander at C when he's with Tavares. Let JT do what he's good at and crash the net. He could probably put on a bit more muscle if he doesn't have center skating duties too. The back half of his contract makes more sense as a power forward to hide his skating decline, think about how long Jagr was able to maintain that game after his skating was completely shot.

What happened to this guy? Ever since we gave him the C he’s been getting worse and worse. The injury excuse doesn’t fly anymore so what’s the deal? Extremely concerning to see him moving like a slug out there. At times it almost looked like he couldn’t keep up with the pace of the play.

You must e kiddig??? Two huge goals durig this series
