Of course, who wouldnt like it. I would honestly be surprised if there was on GM who wouldnt have taken Tavares as a free agent if they had the chance.

Tavares was a great signing. He was a UFA, he earned it. He already took his big discount coming off his entry level deal many years ago. Something Matthews, Marner and Nylander should’ve done this time around.

Signing Tavares and then giving him the C is just about the only thing the Leafs have done right over the past year or so.

If necessary they can probably get out of it (at some cost) when the current CBA expires and buyouts are allowed.

As if there's no possible way $11 million in cap-space could be put to better use...

Unless you're getting me a star number 1 d-man with the money no, not really. I'd rather spend it on the superstar and not make the mistakes we did following the signing.

Our problem wasn't signing Tavares it was everything after that. The RFA contracts have screwed us and got us zero cap space. Getting Barrie when we should have targeted a more physical defensively responsible d-man screwed us. Those are our problems, not Tavares.

Still loving the signing. If you were against the signing from day one that means that you've been wrong since day one. Tavares hasn't been good this year, but he's about a mile down the laundry list of problems currently plaguing this team.

What about two players making $5.5 million? How can you say for certain that's not a better use of cap-space?

Notice you're also hedging yourself better against the risk of injury with 2 players as opposed to 1 that way.

$11 million guy goes down, your roster is hurt tremedously (case in point: Marner)
$5.5 million guy goes down, your roster is less hurt because the other $5.5 million guy is still playing.

I'm not saying it was a bad deal or the Leafs shouldn't have done it.

I'm just saying it's a bit ignorant to think $11 million on Tavares is the absolute optimum way to spend finite capspace.

Awesome signing. Allowed Leafs to trade one of Matthews, Nylander, Marner for RHD, but this was not done. The "We can and we will" line was nice, but not at those cap hits.

All of those problems are the snowball effect of signing Tavares. Fans needs to stop living in last year. Yes he scored 47 last year but he's on pace to score 31 this year and that total will continue to go down year by year. The Leafs are also at the bottom of the standings due the acceleration of the rebuild the Tavares singing caused with a horrid cap situation. This deal is going to be one Leaf fans regret mark my words!

Yes.
Great signing.
Feel bad for the guy.
Could’ve been with a great Defensive Team in the Isles.

Who's to say NYI has the success they do right now? They wouldn't have had the money to sign some of their key guys. Anders Lee for example

That depends on the two players, who are you getting for 5.5 million?? That same offseason Bozak/JVR went for a combined 12 million, you want those two guys or Tavares?

Again, the problem isn't Tavares, it's what we've done after signing him
