Mine was 3rd try for 1st and Hughes! I stopped right there.

Seriois question. If we picked 6th or 7th and Cozens and Krebs were available.......would we really go Cozens? Another Center?

Another serious question. Did we really move up 6 spots by Winnipeg NOT winning their division? Went from 28 to 22. Is that right? Because that move up is HUGE!

It usually isn't a big deal for a center to play wing, but it's a lot harder for a wing to play center. We've got Mika and then a bunch of question marks at center, so I don't see us as not needing another one. Even if Chytil becomes a top 6 center, it's never a bad idea to have more depth at the position. If we win 1st overall, we'll be drafting a center for sure.

Yes, the Winnipeg pick went from 28 to 22 because they didn't win the division, but they can still end up picking 28th or later if they make it to the WCF.

dont plan those picks yet. where playoff teams pick continues to get adjusted as the playoffs proceed.
ie IF TB wins Cup, we get their 1st, at 31
IF Dallas sweeps the Central, we get their pick, but as a Final 4 team, it wont be lower than 28
and similarly, if 'Peg has wins 2 rounds, their first gets worse...

  1. The teams that did not qualify for the playoffs the previous season (picks 1–15)
  2. The teams that made the playoffs in the previous season but did not win either their division in the regular season or play in the Conference Finals (picks 16–23 up to 27)
  3. The teams that won their divisions in the previous season but did not play in the Conference Finals (potentially picks 24–27)
  4. The teams that lose in Conference Finals (picks 28 and 29)
  5. The team that was the runner-up in the Stanley Cup Finals (pick 30)
  6. The team that won the Stanley Cup in the previous season (pick 31)

I believe, depending on how things shake out, the Winnipeg pick can be as high as 18th. So depending on how they perform, and how other teams advance, Winnipeg's pick can end up anywhere from 18th to 31st. Quite the range.

Truth.

If Winnipeg are out in the the first two rounds, and Carolina, Columbus, Dallas or St. Louis, Colorado or Vegas are the four conference finalists, then that's 18th.

But... we'd rather Tampa still be in there so 19th is overall best case.

Basically we need Winnipeg to lose ASAP--Dallas to beat Nashville and their next opponent--Vegas to beat San Jose to drop the Winnipeg pick another slot and Colorado over Calgary for the same reason and Tampa to go all the way and win the Cup.

I actually just took a harder look at the standings, and I don't think it's possible for the Winnipeg pick to be anywhere from 23rd-27th.

(I posted this in the 'Around the NHL' thread yesterday, but it will probably survive a little longer here)

Absolute best case scenario for us draft picks-wise:

Tampa vs. Carolina in the ECF
Dallas vs. Colorado or Vegas in the WCF

Tampa vs. Colorado or Vegas in the finals

Tampa wins the cup.

This would leave us with our own pick, Winnipeg's pick would be 19OA, Dallas' would be 28OA, and Tampa's would be 31OA.

*As mentioned above, the Winnipeg pick can actually be one slot better, but it would be at the expense of Tampa's first rounder.

The only thing not 'needed' here is the Vegas and Colorado wins. As long as one of those teams makes the conference finals, that's good enough.

The pick re-seeding isn't done until after the second round.

If Buffalo wins in the 5th spot my outrage will manifest physically and be able to power one of those singing animatronic fish decorations for at least one (1) hour.

There's no point worrying about Buffalo. I don't expect the Rangers to win any lotteries--more likely we'll either stay where we are or drop back a spot or two. Personally I think Bettman and his gang hate us and personally I don't like him or them either. They're not going to do us any favors and I don't trust their f***ing lottery. The good thing is the group between 6 and 9 are really really good. Close enough anyway to the group between 3 and 5. And we're getting there--Chytil and Andersson two years ago, Kravtsov, Miller and Lundkvist last year, at least two more firsts and maybe up to 4 this year + Shestyorkin + Howden and Hajek and sooner or later a good bunch of all that is going to gel and we're going to have the cap space to add bigger pieces because we'll have a shitload of talent on their first and second contracts. And in the meantime we've got a coaching staff with a clue that is going to push our players and having them have each others backs. We're going to get better.

Wouldn't mind seeing the Avs drop to 4th. They had the top pick in 2017 and ended up 4th after the lottery. Ottawa decided to keep the 2018 pick and they took Tkachuk. They had the choice of giving the Avs the first in 2018. Tkachuk would go in the same spot in this draft.
