Seems to me the Canucks are treating Hughes and Pettersson, much like they did with the Sedins. The mantra in the early days of the Linden-Benning regime was that 'you can't tear it down and start over, as long as Henrik and Daniel are productive players' .

Fast forward to 2023, and the philosophy is unchanged. "You can't do a 'tear it down' rebuild, because Petey, Hughes and Demko are in their prime".....it's not fair to them.

But the bottom line, is that the Canucks are a lottery team for the third year in a row; and since 2020, they've traded three first round draft picks; and four second rounders.

And despite all the rosy optimism of this late season coaching bump, they'll be a universal pick to be a lottery team again next year.
The comparison between the Sedins and EP,QH couldn't be more different..The Sedins were a decade older than EP,QH by the time Linden /Benning had arrived.

There's massive difference between putting all your eggs in a basket for a bunch of guys entering their time years, as opposed to a bunch who are veering on retirement.

I don't think anyone inside or outside the organization, including on this message board, has questioned a proposed rebuild because of "fairness". Instead, it's a question of whether it's worth it to tear everything down, when you already have three players who are top 10 in their position in EP, Hughes, and Demko. A lot of teams that have tried to rebuild still don't have those assets.

I was open to losing Horvat, Miller and using some of that capital to shed salary and start over with a strong base. But ditching EP, Hughes and Demko for magic beans that you hope could one day become another EP, Hughes and Demko was never in the cards, nor should it have been.

I agree the concept is the same. A couple of differences:

1. Gillis, at first, wasn't convinced the Sedin's could lead the team. He came around.
2. The core (most 26 years old and under) was a lot deeper including:
H. Sedin
D. Sedin
Kesler
Bieksa
Burrows
Luongo
Salo
Edler

Rough stretch for the tank lately...........Demko, Hughes and Petey need to pull hammies or something here asap..........as much as i like to see it Ive seen this script before and it's a bit maddening to have us winning games when it matters least...........

I wouldnt want to wish injury on our guys but why the hell is Hughes playing almost 30 mins a night?

Makes no sense, we’re playing guys so hard like we’re in a playoff push. Play the other guys like Wolanin and Brisebois more, see if they can handle bigger roles. Give Kravstov and Podz more minutes etc

Huge L.

Now a tough game against LA on Sat and a back to back against Anaheim on Sunday.

Legit chance we lose 3 straight, but I know better than to get my hopes up with these idiots. Tocchet will probably play Demko both nights.

No chance Anaheim beats us twice

And the over their prime supporting cast? Mostly Miller? In 3 years he's 33 going on 34 right around the age Smyl, Naslund, Bure, when looking at the data the top 25% of NHL players played an average of 12 years then retired, Miller will be in year 12 next year.
So if looked at it sideways thy are putting all their eggs in Miller's basket.

While true about the age of the Sedins they also had been on winning teams, Petey and Quinn have not.

So IF the Canucks were to win ALL their remaining games they have 95 pts.

AND all Tocchet has to do is play three lines the rest of the year. Or double shift Miller's and Petey's lines.

TOTALLY MEANINGLESS GAMES.

They are taken so lightly now other team's will not even drop the gloves with them when invited.

They are so transparent, just like last year, supply some false hope at the end until teams really ratchet it up to playoff type games the last 10 games or so.

All Tocchet can do is play the star players and sit the young guys out regardless of situations. Trying for more ego pumping wins. More false hope.

And the really bad thing is next year they should be able to mail it in for a playoff spot because of other team's cap issues and number of teams rebuilding.

On the Pettersson contract front, NOTHING!!!!! Wile they cannot sign a contract yet they can say they have a deal in hand just like they did with Miller. But not even any talks yet.

Petey's team is going for an 80 point something season, losing season. Just what Pettersson wants. IMO 12+ mil for 3 years

If I’m not mistaken,Miller and OEL will be the only players over 30 (providing they move Myers ,which I think they will)

The main eggs in the basket are EP,QH and TD..and Miller if he can still produce.

Nobody is taking it for granted they are a playoff team next season.

But you should. For a WC slot
Too many teams will be retooling or rebuilding next year
The flat cap will hurt some as well as the Canucks but more for them.

Three players are not enough when the gap to the next level in age and skill is as wide as it is with the Canucks.
Petey has already missed games to injury
And Hughes is one good hit away too.
Demko's hip will not get better, those surgeries only postpone the inevitable outcome, goalies know it is the price of playing the position, replacements later in life. The older goalies that were not just butterfly didn't have as many hip issues.
Look at what happened to Schneider, 2 years after being traded and BOOM, his game went south permanently.

There is just not enough talent here for any reason of high expectations. Even my assumption of a playoff spot next year isn't because of improvement, just keeping the status quo while other teams deteriorate

Interesting to see Sam Jose, who, I believe, was ahead of us at the deadline are now 2nd last even below Chicago and Anaheim...

Showing us how it's done.

Yep....San Jose is 1-6-1 since trading Timo Meier, and collecting a boat-load of draft picks.

And if they scoop up Berard, it will have been a successful season despite the lackluster record. Let the other NHL suckers win absolutely meaningless games down the stretch. Sharks will be laughing all the way to bank.

I'm completely jealous of their ability to throw shit games away.

PIT did it, COL did it, CHI did it, TBay did it...why not us?
