But it's true that the real value of a 2nd round pick is pretty low. Tanev playing last night has already exceeded the contribution of a third of all 2nd round picks.

Yes, and only ~25% of second rounders play 200 games, but undrafted Brandon Tavev is at 500+ and going strong, undrafted Neal Pionk is on his way to a $50M+/800+ game career and even Morgan Barron, a late 6th rounder is having a far longer career than most second rounders

trading a 2nd is not really the issue. i don't think many would have a problem if a 1st+ or 2nd+ and whatnot was moved but for a quality player, or for a player with term, or representing a clear upgrade. ie: previous years 2nd or 3rds moved for Nino, Names, Demelo, or Dillon (non-TDL). All stuck for seasons, all clear upgrades at the time over incumbents on the roster at the time.
however, atm i think on a 4th liner, & really not a clear or huge measurable upgrade in any of the middle-6 Wings (one of the weaker part of the fwd group this year) is the difference. not the end of the world ofc.....i don't mind Schenn though. i was anticipating a vet D being picked up, and Schenn has had solid defensive seasons in the past, and it seems like they wanted/needed another RHD.

Tanev strikes me as one of those guys whos effect is a net positive, albeit not on paper. His numbers aren't the best, but hes been playing on a sliding seattle team for the past 4 years. Gonna be cool to see if his numbers see a bit of a jump playing on a stronger team.
This is what I love about Tanev. He has the never quit motor, he never takes a shift off, he'll put everything he has into blocking shots, muck it up in the corners and stick up for his teammates when needed. He doesn't take shit from anyone and leaves it all on the ice. Then he comes out for his next shift and does it all over again. Has our team got massively better with the addition of him? Not really. But he's exactly the type of player you want in the playoffs. He can play up the lineup if needed and can play either wing. He looks exactly like the player he left Winnipeg as.
And just by the quick in between periods interview he is absolutely pumped to back in Winnipeg and having a chance to play on a contender. That is a very important thing as well.

I'm pretty happy with adding some interchangeable depth, might not play every game but to be able to bring him in and out when needed is a win. High energy grit for the playoffs, we're gonna need it

Looks like he did regular oil changes on his motor while he was gone, hope last night's play continues straight into the playoffs. Gus and Rasmus when his head clears up are good pb plug ins.
