Take a shot: Opening night lineup

Nash-Richards-Callahan
Kreider-Stepan-Gaborik
Hagelin-Boyle-Pyatt
Asham-Halpern-Rupp

McD-Girardi
Staal-MDZ
Stralman-Eminger/Gilroy

Hanke
Biron

well haley will most likely be in the lineup opening night (asham suspended) but this would be the lineup i would go with. i would love to see miller or hrivik crack the lineup but i dont think that will happen. i also see torts flipping hags and kreider a lot during the season. also with torts who honestly knows what we will see, for all we know 1st line could be hagelin-boyle-rupp at some point this year

A two minute drop in ice time in order to have the best overall combinations is really not a big deal. I love Cally and its not something to take personally, but if being on the 'third' line would optimize our overall lineup, I doubt it would be a tremendously noticeable difference.

Nash can play on the left side, so what's the problem in moving him there?

Ah yes, the glorious return of arguments about lines, all of which will inevitably descent into frustrated calls for Torts to be fired because he didn't play player x with player y long enough, or insists on keeping player a paired with player b.

Mitchell R. Beck ‏@HowlingsToday

My gut feeling is they are both staying RT @Msgsgb: @HowlingsToday Is this the last game in Ct for Kreider and Haley -- and maybe others?

Interesting thought. If Kreider and Haley both stay in Hartford, at least to start, they're going to have to bring in a forward from outside the organization.

Jim Cerney just said Torts (& the org) are really high on Hrivik in the blueshirtsunited.com chat.

I think he could potentially be on the team.

Id say there is about a zero percent chance Kreider stays in the AHL, burning another year of his ELC.

His ELC is burned regardless.

I certainly expected him to make the Rangers opening night roster over the summer, but his performance in Hartford has been noticably subpar. Not entirely surprising that at least one of the reporters who watches him there thinks that he isn't ready yet.

EDIT: Looks like Kreider is scratched for the Whale today, so I take it that Beck is wrong, and Kreider will be in camp. Hopefully he can pickup where he left off in the post-season and put his AHL performance behind him.

The Rangers wouldn't have had him leave college early last year if they didn't have every intention of starting him at the NHL level to start the season.

Fair enough. I think the optimal lineup has him on the first or second line. His production warrants it.

PP unit 1.

Nash-Stepan-Gaborik
Richards-Del Zotto

PP unit 2.

Kreider-Hagelin-Callahan
Staal-Stralman

We may have to spread the guys, really only left with Stralman and Callahan as PP worthy guys after the first five. That and we have less PK guys than least year too.

PK forward sets

Stepan-Callahan
Boyle-Hagelin
Halpern-???

Current UFA's include Huselius, Langkow, Hecht, Arnott, Sturm, Knuble, Brunette, Holmstrom, Dvorak, Sykora, etc. Not much to pick from but a few veteran 1-year depth signings would probably be a good idea.

Another undrafted gem? Would be awesome. Interested in seeing how he does in training camp.

i think people are overreacting to kreider's AHL stats. Sure he didnt produce as much as we expected but that doesnt mean he is a bust or a fluke in the playoffs

Kovalev gets a camp invitation but does not make team
Sykora gets signed at one year for 1,5 - 2 M

Nash - Richards - Sykora
Kreider - Stepan - Gaborik
Hagelin - Boyle - Callahan
Rupp - Halpern - Pyatt

Hrivik or Haley as a spare
Asham suspended one game

McD - Girardi
Staal - Stralman
MDZ - Eminger

Bickel spare

There you go!

If we're splitting up the big 3, Nash should not be the odd one out. He's the type of player that benefits the most playing with a top line center. In our case, Brad Richards.

Buzz: Chris Kreider Not Playing For The Whale Today
January 6th, 2013 3:19 pm
Larry Brooks tweets that Chris Kreider is not in the lineup for the Whale today.

Kreider is scratched so that he doesn’t get hurt before Rangers training camp.

As of 44 minutes ago Bob Crawford of the Whale tweeted that he was taking warmup a with Kris Newbury and Brandon Segal

Ryan Callahan led the team in PP goals, I cannot see him on the 2nd unit. I would also like to experience Stepan playing on the point next season to bring a RH threat on the point. He doesn't have the best shot, but he has great vision to operate a PP with his passing ability.

Yeah Kreider will definitely get a shot in camp

Part of me thinks they just need to let him play and not make him overthink everything. When he just played in the NHL playoffs, he looked like a different player than his college days. Then he goes to the AHL and gets all coached up and now he's back to coasting around and not being aggressive, etc. When the Rangers signed him, they told him to watch Hagelin and play like that. Now that he's in the AHL he doesn't seem to be playing like Hagelin at all.

So...what's the deal. Yes he's gotta learn positioning and the general philosophy of the team, etc, but I'll be interested to see him with NHL coaching and how that goes

Holmstrom?

Holmstrom?

Believe his knees are shot and he will announce his retirement as a Lifetime Red Wing.

What about signing M Nylander as a PP Specialist for cheap on a one year deal? I know he is dying to get an invite. We need something like this IMO. I could negotiate this one ;)

I just do not see putting Kreider a 1st year player with Stepan a 3rd year player in this sprint of a season.

Kreider will benefit and learn more in this shortened season playing with Richards than he would with Stepan.

And playing with Boyle has disaster written all over it. It's not a good fit, not at all.

The line will have size, and skating ability, but that's pretty much it as Kreider cannot be expected to be a good defensive player in the NHL just yet.

gonna go with:
Nash, Richards, Callahan
Kreider, Stepan, Gaborik
Hagelin, Boyle, Pyatt
Rupp, Halpern, Asham
Haley spare

McDonaugh, Girardi
Staal, Stralman
Del Zotto, Bickel
Eminger, Gilroy spare

Lundqvist
Biron

This.
