Take a shot: Opening night lineup

I think someone from the Whale makes the team to add a little more offense to the third line. With Miller going back to CT Hrivik makes sense.

If I remember correctly, Torts said he will use Nash on the right wing.

Hagelin-Richards-Nash
Kreider-Stepan-Gaborik
Hrivik-Boyle-Callahan
Rupp-Halpern-Pyatt
Asham

id love if that was to happen.... maybe with him playing well for team USA might maybe let the Rangers give him a few games right off of the bat...

Or they can send him back to the AHL and not even invite him to camp, which is the reported course of action.

The organization seems really concerned about Boyle.

Yeah, man, I mean look at all the rumours about the organization looking for a third line center through trade!

i didn't know eminger was resigned. i see him peppered throughout this thread so i assume it's correct. but i think i'd rather use redden on the third pairing, to be honest.

I can't see Kreider on the 3rd line since he doesn't seem defensively responsible to play the tough minutes like Boyle.

Last year's Prust-Boyle-Fedotenko line started over 60% of shifts in the defensive zone, can you expect Kreider to replicate that? No, he's just a rookie and his defense is shady at best.

IMO, a line of Pyatt-Boyle-Callahan would be nice defensively.

Asham is suspended, he won't be playing opening night.

Fine with this but would really like to see us acquire someone who can pust Pyatt down to the fourth line where Haley is and make us choose between 2/3 of Rupp, Halpern, Asham each night. Hrivik or Miller making the club on along shot or a decent signing that will bring a little more speed to that third line. I'm fine with Callahan on the third line to have an elite, checking, shutdown line and giving him top PP minutes and PK responsibilities, but with Pyatt on that line, it's not really an elite shutdown line but it also kind of wastes the offensive ability that Callahan does have. Would like to see an upgrade there, of all places. A vet #6 d-man wouldn't hurt either.

I see a lot of people putting Callahan on the third line. I really don't see that happening.

He scores the majority of his points on the PP and is an elite shutdown player. If we bolster the opposite wing of that line (Boyle - Callahan + ??) to make a true shutdown monster, he would still see a lot of ES time against teams top lines. And every proposal for him on the third line, in my opinion, is contingent upon him getting top PP unit time and top PK (obviously), so he would still probably be playing easily 20+ minutes a night. Putting him on line "three" is more about the combinations that make sense than the priority of ice time.

Yeah, it's a tough call. On the other hand many have Hagelin on the third with Boyle-Rupp, and I think that's a waste of Carl's speed.

Only way Callahan plays on the third line is if Nash struggled on the left and is moved to RW.

In which case we become somewhat lopsided.

Callahan was still third on the team in ES/TOI last season. That's not going to change. Why list him on the third line if you acknowledge he's not actually going to play there?

You can play on the 3rd line and still garner a lot of minutes. Callahan is a great special teams player, so he'll get his usual 20 mins a night from the 3rd line

Will he get 15 ES minutes a night on the third line? That's what he got last season. Can't see that changing.

I think it can be feasible. He'll also often get double-shifted on the 4th line as well. Staal had around 20 MPG average in the playoffs behind Malkin and Crosby.

In what way is 17 (13g 4a) a majority of 54?

If it dropped to 12:45, would anyone notice? With top PP/PK he will still have virtually identical TOI.

He already had top PP and PK time. So yeah, I think people would notice if his TOI dropped by over 2 minutes.

Unless you want him out there for all of every PP and PK, then his TOI would drop if you play him less at even strength.

A two minute drop in ice time in order to have the best overall combinations is really not a big deal. I love Cally and its not something to take personally, but if being on the 'third' line would optimize our overall lineup, I doubt it would be a tremendously noticeable difference.

I think we need to find a 3rd line RW in camp, be it Thomas, Miller, ect.

I agree with this. I'ts what I also would like to see. :handclap:
