as far as I know it's only possible to lift the puck like that with Stiga NHL, not Stiga International

but lifting the puck like this is a real pleasure, especially if the pass comes around the boards from behind the net.

I LOVE THIS GAME

if only I lived in a country where there are many table hockey tournaments like Russia or the Czech republic. I get to play only during the summer with my Czech buddies!
I think the kit is the nhl one but i'll have to check, never paid any attention to it.He can lift it like crazy so it must be the nhl version. It goes top left corner with velocity you can't imagine, really can't be stopped and i can't seem to develop the correct wrist action to generate the shot for myself and turn the tables. When he's on with it,beating him is difficult.I wish there were leagues for it here too..............so much more fun then video games to me.

On my table, there is a shot that is almost impossible to stop. Basically, using one of my defencement, I'll bank the puck off the boards and into the net. I've played so many times that I know exactly where to bounce the puck off the side boards. The only way to stop it is with quick goalie work, but most people never see this comming because it happens so fast.

Do it all the time too........you have to bank it at the quarter boards past the blueline ( at least i do) and sure enough the goal is there......very tricky but i find you have to have the rest of your game ship shape or it's too easy to defend against.......a shot off the baords ain't hard to defend against unless you're an all round player everywhere else...........at least that's what i've found against good competition. It's almost like a trick play like a bootleg in football...........you've gotta catch em offgaurd for it to be effective after the first few times you've used it.Too easy to read and catch onto unless you're an all around player..........it's fairly easy to stop with your goalie if you are steady.

Cycops and Wilka, where are you from? There are leagues and players everywhere. Maybe I can hook you up with some others. Good to hear that some of you love to play Stiga. We are really trying to grow this game. Also, there are some really good videos of game action between the best players in the world on the Russian site. Click on "English", then on "videos". You might have to download the DivX player by clicking on "DivX" at the bottom of the videos page. Once you have it you can right click on any of the videos and then click "save target as" and it will download to your desktop. Once you do that I can suggest the best ones. Anything with Jacob Lindahl will amaze you. Probably the best table hockey player in the world today.

The puck can be lifted with either NHL figures or internationals but I agree it is easier with NHL'ers. The tradeoff is that the NHL players do not allow you to do many things that the internationals do. The most important is that the foot angles are way different and the abiltiy to lock the puck between foot and stick and make plays is diminished. Also, NHL'ers are not allowed at most international tournaments. NHL'ers are mostly a North American thing since Stiga wanted the NHL license and the NHL mandated changes to the figures in return for the license.

As I remember in the International Stiga, all the "skaters" are left handed, and the angle of the blade of the stick is different, that's why it makes it very hard to lift the puck with the right wingers.

I'm in France anyway, nobody plays table hockey here!

Too bad. Seems like you really enjoy it. Paris would be a great city to visit for a tournament. I'll bet there are more players you just haven't met them.

I'm crazy about this game! If there were pro table hockey leagues, I would seriously reconsider becoming a lawyer.

Well, if you can travel, there is a Euro League. Not much prize money (I think the recent Moscow Cup had a $1000 Euros first prize. Tournaments all over Europe. Pick one and go. I guarantee you'll be hooked even more than you are now. And some great people also. You would be a celebrity as the only Frenchman LOL. Here is the Euro league web site. http://www.eurotablehockey.org/ And if you are ever in Boston contact us at the www.ustha.com web site.

From Canada and grew up playing the plastic players on an nhl(very generic) table.Always good fun but Stiga is a chess match really!! Fast wrists and muscle memory and some strategic plays at full speed make the best players.Video games? .................big bore............ya gotta move!!!
I'd love to see that Swede guy play you mentioned...................they have kick ass players..............best in the world......let's see if anyone can keep them afloat this year!!!

That's quite a small league, but we really made sure we kept only the very best players ... the first season we played a lot of preseason games to determine who would take part in the final tournament, so we kept only 5 out of around 10 applicants. Last season (2003, we had a lockout of our own in 2004), we decided to go on with only the 4 best players, because no matter who was the 5th player the previous 2 seasons, he always finished dead last. And as a matter of fact, I won my 1st title that year!

But what's really great about this game, is that each player really has a very specific style of play, and in order to win, you need to approach the game differently against each opponent. For example I have an under .500 record against the worst player in the league!!! But he's really the only one who reads my offensive game so well and uses every mistake I make.

Maybe I'll post some videos one of these days. Because we actually DO record every playoff game on video.

I found a site where they sell the games and accessories for it such as teams and spare parts and stuff.

http://www.stigahockeygames.com/

Does anyone know what the difference is between the Stiga NHL and Stiga Play-Off (international)? Any differences other than the board ads and ice logos?

The players are different : in the Stiga play-off version all the players hold the stick in the same hand, and I think that the angle of the blade of the stick is different.

The NHL figures (Stanley Cup) are smaller, lighter in weight and 3 lefties and two righties. The International figures (Playoff) are larger, heavier and all lefties. The NHL'ers have a totally different foot and stick angle creating a very different shot and "locking" of the puck. To control the puck you "lock" it between the foot and stick, thus the lock is different in both figures. It boils down to what you prefer and what you are used to. Most of the best players in the world use all lefties, but what is sold in North America mostly is the NHL'ers with the Stanley Cup games.

parts and accesories:

www.rodwarriors.com

Len Mecca at www.rodwarriors.com is very knowledgable, has been playing on every game ever made for decades.

www.tablehockeygames.com

Phil Hamilton at www.tablehockeygames.com is also an expert.

A few more days and we'll be off to Riga. This year there is a veterans competition featuring some of the greats who started the TH revolution a 15-20 years ago. Goran Agdur from Sweden heads the list and is the odds on favorite to walk away with the title. Friend and fellow Framingham MA player and fellow USTHA founder Steve Bernstein will bring his thirty years of experience to the table as he and I both attempt to make a splash.

The open competition will feature all the best from the world and some unbelievable teenagers from Finland, Russia, Czech Republic and Latvia. Our own Worcester MA #1 US ranked Kenny Dubois will attempt to crack the finals group top 40. I can personally attest to his level of play being in top form so look for him to raise some eyebrows.

There is also history in the making with the signing of the first ever ITHF Constitution and the USTHA will be there to take part in the signing at the international meeting on Friday night.

Wish us luck!

Good luck in Riga to everyone who's going there and who's reading this! :)

The other day I went to a toy store and saw they have Swedish Elite League teams available as well, and the style was the same as the NHL teams (3 lefties and 2 righties). Are these available in North America as well? And are there other league teams, such as the Finnish or Russian or whatever?
