4.576 million in cap space with Gardiner. 8.625 if we can move him!
Plenty of room to go big game hunting. If we're able to move Gardiner out, we can go big game hunting and still be able to likely get Necas re-signed next year as well. Also worth noting that the big fish out there (Tarasenko and Eichel) are likely going to also necessitate moving a roster player, so that potentially opens up even more cap space.

It’s devolved into “but what about the Leafs?”
This was me once I saw Marner's name get mentioned...

What they don't seem to get is that this contract means Svech will likely never be paid $11 million a year. When this contract ends, Svech will be near the end of his prime, so the odds of him getting much more than $8 mil is slim.

Meanwhile, Marner's contract ends in 3-4 more years? What are the odds he'll ask for something similar to $11 mil or more at that time?

Svech will be what, 29 or 30 when this contract runs out? He'll have a couple more high performing years left, and I could see him want to cash in at that time. Plus, the cap will eventually start going up again, so by then $10m could look like a reasonable deal.

Put it this way, everyone thought the Jordo contract would be a boat anchor on the second half of it. $6m per year for a guy of that age, how absurd! In reality, its a nothingburger of a contract given what top guys are actually making nowadays. So yeah, I think Svech could get $11m in 2029-30. Not that I care right now.

Marner's the more productive offensive player, so it's not a big shock that his contract is more expensive than Svech's, at least at face value. The problem was that they only bought out 2 UFA seasons for the privilege to pay him that, AND they gave him insane signing bonuses. There's a reason why other clubs are basically treating the Matthews/Marner deals as above-market outliers instead of the true going rate. If you're going to only buy out one-two UFA seasons of your elite talent, at least keep the AAV under $10M like Sakic and co. did with Rantanen (in the same RFA year as Marner!!) and then Makar.
